“Look, if you can’t, just say so. Derek is already on his way to pick me up. I had no idea the batteries would be bad… you know what, never mind.”

“I’ll do it!” I retorted hastily, cutting into his words as I approached him. He only huffed a frustrated breath as he wheeled himself back into the bathroom. I held the razor, trying to avoid eye contact while I shaved him off bit after bit.

My breath was held but my heart still hammered. My fingers trailed over the tip where the razor was, and I continued down until we were at his lower jaw, causing my fingers to brush past his lips. I froze, my eyes lingering on them – on how soft they’d been, how moist and plump they looked. His nose, his face… his eyes.

I staggered backward, hating how I’d been caught staring again.

“One would really think we were actually married and in love, with all the flinching, and the blushing that you do… and your heart… I can hear it beating so fast from rooms away. You can drop the act when it’s just us. The emotions are away for a while either way.”

My heart sank and a knot twisted in the pit of my belly hearing him speak. He was right… but damn did it hurt to hear him put it that way. We were nothing. It was a marriage from convenience.

Why would an alpha like Ryan want anything serious to do with a lowly omega like me? Certainly he could do better if he wanted to.

“It’s all done,” I spoke, trying to hold a tough front before scurrying out of the bathroom back to the kitchen, trying to hide the hurt in my voice and pain on my face.

When he returned, he was fully clothed and bathed. The room was awkward and tense. The drive to the nearest bus station had been awkward too. Neither of us had spoken a word.

Beta Derek had often glanced in my direction, noting the awkwardness between Alpha Ryan and I but hadn’t pointed it out too. Finally, I got dropped off at work feeling more devastated and irritated at everything and everyone when I pushed the door open.

The first thing I noticed was silence, which was very unusual. Had someone died? I made my way toward my cubicle, dragging out my seat before my eyes caught

Zoey, my partner.

“What’s happening? Why’s everyone silent? Did someone get hurt?” I asked, keeping my voice hushed when Zoey’s face contorted into a frown and surprise.

“You didn’t get a mail this morning?” Zoey questioned. I may have been busy sulking over Ryan’s comment to think or pay attention to anything else, but instead I shook my head in response to Zoey.

“Well, the company had been bought. The leaders are swapped out. We have a new boss and he’ll be here in any minute to introduce himself… oh, here he comes,” Zoey zipped her lips shut as her mouth turned in the direction of the door.

My body stilled, my heart hammered in my chest and a chill ran down my spine as goosebumps lined my skin when my eyes met with this new boss… it was him… a man I’d met two years ago… the one I loved, the one who had left me.

It was Bryan… Alpha Bryan.

Scarlett’s POV

His eyes glided over to mine and steered past me, a wide grin stretched on his lips as he glanced around my cubicle and down at my colleagues… and in that moment, I felt an ever sharper stab of pain.

He didn’t recognize me? Was it possible? Was he merely ignoring me like I’d never even mattered to him from the very beginning?

I watched keenly as he made an introduction.

“I’m Bryan, I will be your new boss. I needed a firm like this in the pack and your previous owner was out to sell…” My mind trailed off, blocking out his words, but I’d watched – his accent remained the same, his gestures, his movement just as precise as the past. His voice was huskier, but I’d committed it to memory – those hands tucked-folded across his chest were ones I’d held to sleep, hugged to sleep in my pack years ago.

Yet here we were again.

“That will be all for now.” He ordered, turning away. Our eyes had locked again, but he still hadn’t given a single thing away. I hadn’t changed much in my outward appearance and neither had my scent. He was ignoring my existence altogether, like I meant nothing.

He left me.

He started it, and yet he was somehow getting the upper hand here. Fighting the urge to hold back my tears, I buried myself into my work. My wolf felt as weak as I was. We shared the pain through the bond as old scars revealed themselves.

Time passed awfully slow, and never had I imagined I’d yearn for the comfort of Alpha Ryan’s pack mansion. I wanted to go back home, into the warmth of his bed… our bed.

“Scarlett?” My eyes glided over in the direction the voice had called. It was my boss, Tom, head of my department, handing over a file to me.

“Take this to Alpha Bryan… he needs someone to review our recent reports and stats. You ought to clear that up before you clock out today,” he ordered sternly before turning away on his feet, not bothering to hear my excuse, complaints or take my compliance.

My feet steered on their own accord towards Bryan’s office. Pushing the door open, he lifted his eyes off the heap of papers on his desk to meet my gaze. Heat flushed my cheeks and I found it hard to breathe. Now that we were in proximity, there was no denying that it was him.

My wolf knew everything about him, and so did I. But why wasn’t he showing any signs of recognition?

“I’m here to brief you, as ordered by Tom,” I blurted out before setting out the terms. My heart hammered in my chest as I began… and for an awfully longer moment than necessary, I spent time pointing out details of the sheets to him. Yet not once had he spoken.

My patience wore thin, my irritation spiked. I wasn’t willing to stand his innocuous attitude for much longer.

“That’s all, Alpha Bryan,” I muttered, dragging out the ends of my words on purpose – the word laced with anger, sarcasm, and venom.

As soon as my hands rested on the knob to the door, I felt his arm on me as he yanked me backwards, hauling me away from the door towards him.

And for the first time in the entire day, Bryan had let his mask slip. I saw him… I saw the man I’d loved. I saw the one who’d protected me, the one whom I shared good memories with before everything had gone sour.

“You… you’ve been marked?” he asked, pulling away from me and yanking my arms up, his eyes remained locked on my finger and the stone embedded in the ring before a sneer eased from his lips.

“In the end, you settled for some poor wolf? A fellow omega like you?” I gritted my teeth so hard that my jaw hurt, my fingers itched to strike him.

He wasn’t anything compared to Alpha Ryan, but bringing it up to prove a point to him was pointless.

“And why is that your business? Last I checked, you walked out on me… on us,” I responded, this time dropping the act as well. And when he grinned even wider, the smirk splitting his face in half, I realized Bryan had recognized me from the minute he walked in.

All he’d done was ignore me just to get under my skin on purpose. He was once again playing mind games with me.

“Answer me – who is the poor wolf? The omega who thought it was smart to mark a weak omega like you? Not that you both would be any better, but I guess you have no self-respect or shame for any sorts. If anything at all, we both know the truth to you, don’t we?” Bryan asked.

A cold chill settled down my spine. Silence followed his words. Tension filled the space between us as my face paled of color.

“What… what do… what do you mean by that?” I stuttered, my voice barely above a whisper when a scoff eased off Bryan’s lips.

He yanked me by the arm, shoving me backwards from the door. My back hit the wall as he caged both of his arms at both sides of my head, locking me between them, his face merely inches away from mine with his breath fanning against my skin.

“Don’t tell me you forgot, Scarlett. The reason why I turned my back on you. The reason why I left a three-year relationship I shared with you… we both know, or should I perhaps jog your memory?” he asked.

His words were cruelly painful. Mist of tears gathered in my eyes as I shoved my palms into his chest, trying to push him off – only for him to yank me by my hand back against the wall, his lips pressed closer to my ears now.

“Fine

, I’ll help you remember. It started that night… didn’t it?”
