Scarlett’s POV
“It was a misunderstanding!” I breathed out, hyperventilating now as a sheen of sweat coated my temples. I didn’t want those memories resurfacing, they were like bile against my throat as I struggled to keep them down.
It made my skin itch, it made goosebumps line my skin, my vision blurred as tears streaked off to my cheeks.
“A mistake?” Bryan asked, bursting into a dark bark of laughter before tilting his head lightly, his gaze darkening from pure rage and hatred… and disgust.
“A mistake you call it?” he asked again, this time his grip on my arm was growing tighter, it was hurting me,but I refused to show any sign of weakness.
“Of course you would call it a mistake. You are a pathetic excuse for a wolf. A weakling, a liar, and a gold digger… a whore! Oh, so now I’m an alpha… now I’m wealthy, you want to crawl your way back to me! After what happened two years ago?”
Pure hatred marred his features, making anger and fear roll within me in waves.
“You knew?” I asked, and then he’d snorted again, laughing out loud, in a chilling and menacing manner that had me trembling from fear.
“You knew what happened, and you left?” I asked in a shaky tone as my voice betrayed me, breaking down in the end, making me look way more frail and fragile than I already was.
“I did. And I left, because all you do is lie, Scarlett. All you do is sell out people for secrets… for your own selfish needs… You put up a front as an omega, but you’ve always been greedy for more. You are bitter. Hateful wolf,” he snapped.
A low growl rumbled in his throat as he spoke, his fingers formed into claws, I could see the storm of anger behind his eyes. He didn’t believe me, it misunderstood-he didn’t know the whole truth.
But of what use was it now? It was too late to make amends, to make him see the truth or believe. If he wanted to, he would have waited, would have persuaded me-but he didn’t. He’d dropped me off at the first chance he got.
I was mated now to Alpha Ryan, I wasn’t the same person Bryan had last seen.
“You are right,” I blurted out, clearing my throat and keeping my stance. Bryan’s eyebrows crimped together in confusion, attuned to my sudden calming. After all, I’d just told him it was a misunderstanding.
“It happened just like you thought it was back then at the Bluestone pack, and it changes nothing. I still don’t want you, I don’t want anything you have to offer either… I do not care if you are an alpha now or if you’ve gotten enough wealth to be my boss. I’m marked… by another.”
My words seemed to have set him off the edge as he shoved me over the floor, a loud wince of pain dragged off my lips as I staggered back to my feet.
“I’m done with today’s work, Alpha Bryan. The report has been made. I’ll take this as my cue to leave,” I spoke in a plain voice that happened to grate on his nerves the more.
Turning away from his office, I grabbed my bag off my table before darting downstairs. The weather reacted on cue and a heavy rainfall had followed… cursing myself inwardly, I recalled I’d left the umbrella by my desk, but I refused to return for it. After all, Bryan was still up, and I wasn’t willing to take my chances with running into Bryan once more.
Checking the time on my watch, I realized it was way too late for a subway. I’d missed the last bus, none would be coming until a long time after…
Shoving my feet into the rain, I scurried over to the pavement, hailing a taxi… settling into the seat I gritted my teeth from cold as I replayed today’s occurrence in a continuous loop in my mind.
I hated how things had turned out, I hated how I’d given up what could have been my last chance to have made things right with Bryan… but now it was no more. I needed to move on.
“Ma’am, this is the farthest I can go, these grounds and estate is off limits to cabs and buses,” the driver explained, glancing at me with a little bit of concern as I tried to hold in my tears.
I paid off the cab driver, shoving my self into the rain as I headed into the estate. I’d known the taxi wouldn’t be cleared and I’d known better than forgetting my umbrella.
Seeing how heavy the rain was, seeing the lonely streets, knowing the rain would serve as a proper cover-up for me, I decided to let my pain out.
A strangled cry burst free from my lips as I wept in the rain, running towards Alpha Ryan’s mansion. Thunder clapped dangerously, reminding me of the night I’d lost what had mattered the most to me-the night when my worst began, the night that had caused a rift between the only man I’d ever loved and myself, the night I dreaded to think about.
“Scarlett?” His soothing voice called to me as I stopped to a halt by the entrance. The door had swung open and Beta Derek stood, with an umbrella in his hands.
Alpha Ryan was seated in his wheelchair, he seemed to be speaking, he wasn’t pleased, lines of frowns were etched on his face as my vision blurred and a heavy migraine struck my head.
“Why were you in the rain? Why did you walk here?…. What’s wrong?” Alpha Ryan asked again, he seemed to be more worried.
“Help her in, now,” Alpha Ryan ordered Beta Derek, his eyes not for once leaving mine as Beta Derek helped me in through the door, water dripping from my soaked hair to my drenched body and down to the floor.
Ryan’s POV
Just as I wheeled sideways for Scarlett to walk in, she slipped, stumbling towards the floor when I’d caught her in my arms, my gaze widening from shock as a sharp tingle traveled down my spine in a second.
It was a usual response of my body to hers, every slight brush of skin had a chill running down my spine.
“Scarlett,” I called out to her. She groaned, not moving from my arms which she’d fallen into. I reached for her temples only to see she was burning up, and then I’m struck immediately by worry.
“Get the pack doctor… now!” I ordered Beta Derek who nodded as he bent to reach for Scarlett. A low growl rumbled free from my lips faster than I could stop it as I slapped his hands away from her.
“I was just helping,” Beta Derek stuttered, surprised by my sudden show of possessiveness, just as I was. Holding my breath, I guided her against my thighs.
“It’s fine, I can handle her myself… I marked her, didn’t I?” I asked with a snicker, not knowing why I was mad at Beta Derek who only wanted to help me.
He reached forward for my wheelchair in an attempt to wheel me forward, but I immediately hated the idea of some other man helping Scarlett in any other way to get to safety.
“Just call the pack doctor, I need him here as fast as possible,” I retorted hastily, before standing to my feet up from the wheelchair.
Beta Derek seemed more confused at my sudden action as his eyes darted from me and back towards the wheelchair.
“She’s passed out, she won’t remember a thing and she’s barely awake right now, there’s nothing to worry about, it’s all safe,” I muttered beneath my breath, thin on patience as I lifted her into my arms, hastening my steps towards our bedroom.
I’d tucked her in, covered her with thicker blankets. She was still cold. Her teeth chattering together, she parted her eyes slightly.
“Bryan?” she whispered, reaching for my cheeks as I remained frozen bent over her… but rather than being struck by worry if she’d recall me being able to stand, walk and bend properly, I hated the sound of his foreign name.
She closed her eyes shut, slipping back into unconsciousness right in time for Derek to storm in with the pack doctor by his side… the only doctor I could trust enough with my secret of being able to walk kept safely intact.
“She’s weak,” Mr. Emmet spoke, reaching for her. I watched as he went about his duties, giving me enough time to take in her view. She looked pale, weak, and frail… like she’d lost weight, as little from the first time we met.
I settled myself back into the wheelchair, my arms folded across my chest.
“Nothing serious here, Alpha Ryan. It’s fever. A serious one though, but nothing bad. She needs lots of rest… and strength. Even for an omega, she’s really weak,” Doctor Emmet spoke.
He’d then proceeded to give out the list of recommended herbs and drugs for her before Derek had escorted him off, leaving Scarlett and I once again alone, together…
A pang of guilt struck me as I watched her unmoving body drag out slow erratic breaths. She wasn’t fairing well. I’d noticed how hard she tried not to fall asleep before I did. She’d cooked to her best and was always up and about working. Was this who she really was? Or did she perhaps have a bigger end game in mind?
“Bryan!” Scarlett screamed from her bed, whimpering as though she was having a nightmare. Her word whimpered once again, dragging out a low wail before she’d begun to pant heavily.
