“She’s odd. It’s either she’s hiding something or… we made a terrible mistake,” I responded, hating how it sounded even to my own tongue. Bitter. I didn’t make mistakes. A little error could ruin everything I’d planned.

“Exactly my thoughts too. She’s been fickle… soft, I’d say. Didn’t look as interested in your wealth as I thought she would,” Beta Derek added.

I hummed in response, letting my mind trail off to the series of events that had followed from the moment I’d met Scarlett.

“I chose her because her background and stats showed she needed money and would do anything for it. But she doesn’t seem like the typical gold-digger. Not the greedy she-wolf I expected her to be. She hasn’t said anything about wanting to be Luna. She looked stunned when she found out I was the owner of Ryhams Group. Didn’t want her coworkers to know. Didn’t care to boast. She even chose cheap rings… Something feels off,” I explained.

I hated the feeling of uncertainty. I needed someone to take the bait-someone I could claim and control. And what better way to do that than flaunting money in their face?

Yet she far exceeded my expectations. I’d chosen her wrongly. And to be honest, I picked her because she was the only unmated wolf I could stand. The others just wanted to know how wealthy I was, how much I had in insurance, if I had plans for babies. They all cared about my inheritance and were ashamed to even look at me in a wheelchair.

But not Scarlett.

She never brought it up. Not once. She was always… scared, careful around me.

“It’s either she’s got a good heart… meaning we made a terrible mistake,” Beta Derek muttered, trailing off at the end.

“Or she’s just really good at hiding her true self,” I completed his words, mumbling under my breath as I continued the drive to the office.

A knock sounded on the door to my office, and Derek’s face popped in from behind it.

“It’s Alpha Alaric. He’s here to see you,” Beta Derek offered.

I nodded, and Derek shut the door. Barely moments later, Alaric waltzed in like he owned the place, a smug smirk stretched across his lips.

“Drop that look. It’s scary,” I muttered, stacking up the files.

“Really? That’s what I get? You didn’t miss your best buddy?” Alaric asked with a snort, settling into the chair opposite my desk. Of course, Alaric and I were friends. We’d grown together, trained to be Alphas side-by-side, worked together all these years. Yet he always found plain joy in making me reel, in getting under my skin-and I knew today was one of those days.

“I heard you’ve marked a woman… claimed her. And yet here you are, working your ass off like the stuck-up Alpha you are,” Alaric snorted, running his fingers along my desk. I huffed out a frustrated sigh.

“It’s my business, not yours-and we both know that won’t happen. Whatever plans you made, cancel them,” I snapped, curt and cold. My tone was a warning.

Alaric only whined. He wasn’t put off by my sharp edge. He knew me too well-knew when the anger was real and when it was a mask.

“Yeah, I know. But she’s your woman now. If I have to spell it out-it means you’ve taken a claim on her. Marked her. Owned her. She won’t be able to go off to anyone else. Can’t you at least do the poor woman a favor by making her marital life a little less miserable?” he asked, leaning forward, bracing his hands on my desk.

I slammed my pens against him, knocking his hands away, glare sharp as glass.

“I only marked her to get my father off my back and we both know it. This has nothing to do with wanting to be with her. I won’t entertain a miserable marital life just for show. She knows I don’t have time for pointless romance. So how about you let that sink into your skull too, Alaric?” I hissed, slurring out the end of his name on purpose.

“Is this because of the girl?”

I froze.

My hand hung in the air when he spoke. My throat clogged as I slammed the file hard against the desk.

“Have you found out anything about her yet?” Alaric asked again, but I only shook my head.

“Nothing much. Just a few traces. Derek’s looking into it at the moment but… there’s nothing extreme to note for now. I’ll find her,” I assured myself.

I had sworn I would. I would find the girl who had saved my life years ago, the one I’d met that night during that bloody accident.

“I thought you’d kept yourself for her… wanted to marry her, mark and mate with her. I was surprised you’d chosen this route, this plan of holding off with another woman,” Alaric said this time, his voice softer, more serious.

I sighed, letting my shoulders slump as I sank into the chair.

“I only got married to Scarlett to throw my father off my back. He wanted me to mark Mira, and we both know Mira is a spoiled maniac. I can’t have her poking her nose around and finding out the truth,” I answered with a scowl when Alaric gave me that understanding look.

“And this mate of yours… this Mrs. Hamilton. Will you at least tell her the truth about your legs?” Alaric asked.

I only scoffed. There was a zero percent chance of that-not when I didn’t even fully understand Scarlett’s deal yet.

“No. I won’t,” I responded as my mind wandered back to the girl who had saved me-the one I wanted, the one I’d been searching for.

That day… Everyone thought I’d lost my legs in the accident.

A crippled Alpha. Except they were all wrong.

Scarlett’s POV.

The bed was empty, again.

I’d returned home but no one was around, Ryan hadn’t gotten back from work and I took it as a cue to bathe and prepare for bed before he returned. Except he hadn’t. I couldn’t get the conversations we shared in the vehicle out of my mind, so I decided to sit up for him to return then apologize.

Except I had no idea when I’d slept off. My eyes glanced across the room, it had Ryan’s scent lingering, but he wasn’t in, which meant he was home, must have slept and woken earlier than I did.

Stepping down the stairs, the first thing I noticed was Ryan slurping coffee from a mug. The kitchen was empty, the pack couple Mr. and Mrs. Thompson didn’t seem to be around.

“Good morning, no breakfast yet?” I slurred slowly in an attempt to break the tension between us. Ryan nodded curtly, setting the mug down with a frown.

“The Thompsons, their daughter will be getting married. They dropped by last night to inform us but you were asleep,” Ryan responded curtly. For a moment I was dumbstruck. How long had I slept for? And he didn’t seem as though he had intentions to hire a maid.

Every alpha I’d heard or knew of had maids swarming around in their pack mansion, had guards standing on duty, but for Ryan… he was different.

“You can cook, can’t you?” he asked. His question took me by utter surprise as my eyes glided over to the kitchen and back to me. I nodded slowly, uncertain if anything I’d make was as good as Mrs. Thompson’s.

“A little… but I learnt at our previous pack. It was my duty as omega then to cook and help with the dishes…” I slurred, knowing I’d hate to bring up a pity sob story and ruin the moment.

“Just make breakfast. I won’t hire a maid, so you’ll be in charge of cooking till the Thompsons return.” I nodded, sweat rolling off my temples as I made my way toward the stove.

I felt Alpha Ryan’s eyes on me all through, but he hadn’t said anything. Each time we were in proximity, my heart raced, my mind was aloft. He made my skin tingle and set a chill down my spine. I was always reacting in strange ways to his touch, words, or his presence.

He hadn’t spoken a word and wheeled himself away, leaving me to tend to my cooking. The dish was halfway ready when I’d heard him wheeling back towards the kitchen.

“I need your help. The batteries in this are bad and I have an important pack meeting to attend. I need a quick shave before I leave… is that something you can do?” he asked, pointing the razor at me. In his other hand was the electric one, the supposed one that needed batteries.
