Those rings would be a ridicule to him.

“Come on, Scarlett… you can’t just stand there forever. Come to bed,” he soothed again, and for the first time, he raised his eyes from the laptop to glance in my direction.

I swallowed thickly, my feet dragging off the floor as I headed toward him before seating in bed and laying awkwardly by his side.

“You showered already?” I asked in an attempt to fill in the awkward silence, seeing how he’d changed his clothes already. I’d expected it would be my job, but I was stunned to see he didn’t have any caregivers or maids running to his beck and call.

“Showered already,” he responded curtly before closing his laptop and placing it at the desk by the bedside. He turned fully this time to face me, his breath ghosting against my skin-and I swear my heart was beating so fast he could hear it now.

“I can handle myself, Scarlett. I don’t need you to be anxious or tense. I’m a grownup,” he offered, explaining gently to me. And even now, I realized maybe I had hurt him. I’d spoken without thinking, and I certainly knew I wouldn’t want a mate-or husband-who would remind me of my deficiency, yet here I was doing just that to him.

“I’m sorry, Alpha Ryan. I didn’t mean to-“

“Ryan. Just call me Ryan, Scarlett. And it’s fine. So go to sleep, Scarlett. I don’t bite… and I won’t bother you. Nothing is happening,” he reassured before flicking off the light and retreating into the bed. His body brushed against mine lightly, and I held my breath, willing for my loud heart to stop beating.

Scarlett’s POV.

A loud yawn eased across my lips as I turned in bed, smacking my lips together and scratching at my throat. Then a sudden realization struck me as I jolted up from the bed, my eyes bulging out of their sockets as I recalled last night’s occurrence.

This wasn’t my home. This was Alpha Ryan’s home-and worse still, it was my first night sleeping here. How could I have been so careless and clueless? My eyes caught a sight of my reflection in the mirror and my entire body went numb. I looked like a mess. Yet to my despair-or rather relief-Alpha Ryan wasn’t in bed anymore.

Had he left because I’d snored too loud? Spoke in my sleep? Was I a nuisance to him? Terror washed over me as I dragged my feet off the bed, reluctantly making my way towards the bathroom.

I’d taken a quick and usual routine of washing up, drying, and slipping into another fresh set of clothes before making the bed.

My feet stamped against the floor as I dashed down the stairs, but my nose was struck with an aroma of breakfast being made.

“Good morning, Mrs. Hamilton!” Mrs. Thompson called forward, a smile on her face as she plated Ryan’s food before him.

“Good morning,” I stuttered, dragging my feet along to the kitchen island, pulling out a chair to sit on.

“Good morning, Alpha Ryan,” I greeted, my voice was barely above a whisper as my fingers fiddled with every available button on my shirt, trying to hide my anxiety.

A brief pause came from him and his silence was more unnerving than I expected it to be. Raising my eyes to lock with him, I swallowed thickly seeing a frown on his face.

“Ryan… I said you call me Ryan, not the Alpha nonsense. I marked you, Scarlett, don’t you think it would be weird for you to go around calling me by my title?” he asked in a bored yet slightly pissed tone. I nodded, thankful he wasn’t angry about my sleeping habits.

“Sorry, Ryan,” I whispered again. He seemed pleased by my response this time as Mrs. Thompson plated my own dish. For a moment, my eyes took him in-he was dressed beautifully, in a shirt and pant trousers to fit. He was styled so perfectly every time, it made me understand why unmated and mated wolves of the pack fell at his feet.

“Where’s your ring?” Ryan asked, causing my heart to slam hard in my chest. As soon as my eyes rested on his finger, I saw he was wearing the ring! His own-which I had tossed carelessly into the drawer yesterday in an attempt to cover my shameful taste.

“I… It’s here,” I muttered, reaching for it in my bag before slipping it through my fingers.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hide it, I just… I felt it wasn’t to your taste,” I admitted, letting my eyes finally lock with his. He didn’t seem angry or unpleased.

Just a glum stare that made my belly churn for some unknown reason.

“Is that so?” he asked before drinking from his cup.

“I thought it was okay. Beautiful… no extravagance, but does the work well,” he responded without a hint of sarcasm in his tone, letting me exhale.

Knowing my choice of words was probably going to be senseless as I’d become a bumbling mess around him, I dived into my breakfast. Ryan was done before me, but he didn’t move. I felt his eyes on me.

“I’ll drop you off at work,” he offered, and I choked on a piece of salmon, coughing it out awkwardly.

No. There was no way that was happening. Literally, they’d devour me if they were to find out he-Alpha Ryan-had marked me… that he was my husband.

Everyone wanted me, and I dreaded what would happen if they found out I was married and marked by him.

“No, I’ll take the bus. It’s… easier that way,” I blurted out senselessly again, and the grin on his lips made me realize I’d fallen right into whatever trap it was he laid for me.

“There’s no subway here. No taxis. The area is closer to the woods and on the outer skirt of town… except you plan to make a run there by shifting, I don’t think that’s an option either,” he spoke carefreely before wheeling toward the door, not waiting for an argument or a response from me as I hastily shot to my feet after him.

He was right. The area was kept close to the rest of the city, and running to work wasn’t an option. I’d have my clothes shredded and I’d be worn out before I got there.

“Mrs. Scarlett?” a man offered, as he held out the door for me. I nodded slightly, settling into the seat as Ryan settled into the other end of the car.

“I’m Derek… the Beta to Alpha Ryan,” he offered again, before igniting the engine to the car.

The drive was silent, yet I’d stolen a few careful glances at Ryan, who I swear knew I’d been staring-but was either too busy with the document his eyes were scanning through, or didn’t care enough to be bothered by it.

“I’ll be getting you a car,” he announced, sending a jolt through me.

“A… car?” I asked as my throat ran dry and my jaw chose to fail me at a crucial moment like this.

“Yes. I won’t be at the villa every time, and you won’t be opportune to catch a taxi-not from home anyways. So yes, a car would be just right. Any preferences?” he asked again.

I stared at him gloomily, blankly, waiting for him to call it a joke-a prank… but when he dropped the file in his hand with a sigh, I realized he meant it! He was going to get me a car.

“No… I’ll wake up earlier and make a run for the nearest street… I’ll hail a cab. I’m sorry, but I can’t accept a car from you, Alpha Ryan,” I spoke only to see the frown on his face bore deeper.

“Scarlett, you-“

I shoved open the door as soon as the car stopped to a halt, bolted out of it, and gave him a curt bow.

“Thanks for the ride,” I asserted, shutting the door in his face and running on my feet away from whatever it was he had to say…

I owed himenough. I needed to work a way around paying my debt-not rack up more.

Ryan’s POV

My eyes trailed in the direction Scarlett had scurried off to, and a snicker escaped me as I slouched into the couch, slamming the files in my hands down beside me.

Derek and I locked gazes. He hadn’t spoken, but I could tell what he was thinking. I didn’t understand Scarlett-and I hated complicated things. I hated when plans didn’t fall according to how I’d deduced them. I liked when things happened in order. But she… Scarlett… she was an exception.

“I think there’s something off with her, Alpha Ryan,” Beta Derek said, earning a nod from me as I crossed my arms over my chest.
