“What about Nadine?”
Irene sighs softly. “The last I knew; she was working as a manager at the Harris Hotel.”
Sebastian furrows his brow. “But she won’t respond to you?”
Irene shakes her head.
“That’s strange.” Sebastian leans back comfortably. “Alright then. Don’t keep this file in the office, Irene. It’s dangerous. Organize it and mark the crucial parts. I’ll bring it this evening.” “Yes, sir.”
Before Sebastian goes back into his office, he makes sure of one thing. “Did Bella stop by here?”
“Yes, she did.” Irene’s smile suddenly appeared, and she adjusted her thick-framed glasses. “I was ordering food in case Miss Bella is hungry after school, sir.” “You ordered for Bella? For me?”
Irene blinked slowly. “I thought you had an appointment outside. That’s what your schedule indicated.” She then opened another agenda containing all of her boss’s schedules. “What?” Sebastian blinked in disbelief. “When did I say I had an appointment?”
Irene sighed softly. “When we returned from the cemetery yesterday, sir.”
Sebastian’s brain quickly processed Irene’s words from yesterday. He felt that there was no conversation about an appointment for today. Instead, Sebastian remembered how enjoyable the rest of his time was yesterday.
Sebastian took Bella to the movies. There was an exciting film to be enjoyed together. It felt like it had been a long time since he set foot in a public place like a cinema. Eating popcorn leisurely, sipping soda from a cup, and indulging in the movie playing. Bella immediately agreed.
“Yes! Can I go shopping too, Daddy? I need new shoes.”
Sebastian sighed but couldn’t refuse.
“Let’s have ice cream before we actually go home, Daddy?” Sebastian nodded, and Bella responded with excitement.
Irene didn’t actually have to accompany the two of them. Really. She could feel how thrilled Bella was to spend time with Sebastian. However, there were always behaviors from Sebastian that made her annoyed. Especially when they entered one of Sebastian’s favorite boutiques.
Five shirt options were presented to Irene. Sebastian said, “Choose the best ones.”
Irene did her job, but honestly, Sebastian was incredibly irritating. He found fault in everything, and Irene wished she could tape his mouth shut with black tape. He was so nitpicky.
Meanwhile, Sebastian felt puzzled by Irene’s behavior. The girl looked at him with piercing eyes. Was it because Sebastian was causing trouble? He was just asking for advice on choosing a shirt for Bella. Was that wrong? It shouldn’t be, right? “You said they were all good. I have to make a decision, Irene. Three colors are enough.” Sebastian sighed, folding his arms across his chest. The five shirts were handed back to Irene.
“If I choose three out of the five, the other two might feel left out,” Irene replied calmly.
“I said that?” Sebastian widened his eyes in disbelief. “I said that to a date, not to a shirt.” He chuckled, making one of the boutique staff smile. “See? Even the lady is laughing.”
Irene just sighed deeply. Her hands moved quickly to select the colors that would suit Sebastian. “These three colors are suitable. You already have the rest.”
“Really?” Sebastian was taken aback. “You have a great memory, Irene.” Once again, laughter adorned the corners of Sebastian’s lips. “I have a lunch appointment with someone on Monday. This one seems appropriate for me to wear, right, Irene?” he pointed to one of the shirts Irene had chosen..
Without hesitation, his assistant nodded. “Formal or informal?”
“Just an old friend, Irene.”
“In that case,” Irene paused for a moment. Her eyes quickly scanned the boutique, where many shirts and men’s outfits were displayed. “Please find the light grey pants from earlier. They’re at the end over there. The brown belt is also fine. I saw the shoes in the display on the upper right, I think they’ll match well for my boss. Can you get them for me? I want to see how everything matches.”
Sebastian grinned widely.
“Oh, and the casual navy blazer too,” Irene tapped her nose. “I’ll find it for you.” She darted off, leaving Sebastian and Bella enjoying their ice cream cup. The child had to be silenced with something she liked. Next to Bella sat a row of paper bags with the logos of famous brands where Bella had spent Sebastian’s money.
“Irene has good taste,” praised Bella as she took another spoonful of her ice cream. “Daddy, do you want some?”
“Of course. Feed Daddy,” he requested. Vanilla ice cream mixed with strawberry and lots of extra toppings slid into Sebastian’s mouth. Occasionally, he asked Bella about her school and their plans after the exams.
“Is there anything else you want to buy?” Sebastian asked casually. He tidied Bella’s hair even though it didn’t need it. Irene skillfully fixed the long hair. Even Mrs. Merry wasn’t that good at it.
“No,” Bella shook her ice cream cup. “Irene doesn’t want to buy a sweater. It was really cute earlier. It looked like a cute little cat, Daddy.”
Sebastian laughed. “There’s no way Irene would wear something like that.”
“Daddy, you’re hopeless! Irene likes cute things, just like I said. But she’s not confident enough to wear them. That’s what she said earlier.”
“Oh, really?”
Bella nodded without hesitation. She talked about this and that, telling Sebastian what she and Irene had discussed. She found it exciting. Bella didn’t feel too lonely. The conversation was interrupted when Irene arrived, slightly struggling with carrying various items.
“Now, you can try them on,” Irene grinned widely. The fruits of her hunt for Sebastian looked perfect. It didn’t take long for Sebastian to come out of the fitting room. Irene’s smile didn’t fade. The definition of a successful young businessman, a talented young executive, handsome, accomplished, and certainly not from an ordinary background, was embodied in Sebastian.
Irene was proud to be able to enjoy his presence even as his assistant. “Ready for tomorrow’s meeting.” She gave a thumbs-up as a form of appreciation.
“Is that so?” Sebastian examined himself in the mirror. From his reflection, it was clear that Irene was admiring him. “If you say so, I’ll buy everything.”
Suddenly, all those conversations flashed through his mind. Then… Sebastian burst into laughter. He just realized that he was wearing all of Irene’s choices from yesterday without hesitation this morning.
“You’re cool, sir,” Irene looked at her boss with admiration.
