It wasn’t advisable, she was just out of coma-she needed her rest.

But I wouldn’t let her talk down on a man. On my man, my mate, my alpha-the one person who had done everything and anything for me. A man who had checked on her constantly, made arrangements to her room every week for six months. I wouldn’t let her insult him all because of my foolishness.

“Do you… love him?” she asked. My breaths hitched at her question. I hated how her sudden interest piqued.

“I don’t. He only mated with me because he needed it and so did I,” I responded. Yet the words gutted me. That was the truth, wasn’t it? Why did it sound like a lie even to myself?

Why did admitting it out loud break me from the inside? He’d wanted me, he’d said it, he’d proved it, but was this all still a game to him? Was he being nice because of my predicament? We weren’t young pups and I didn’t need a lavish profession of love but… was this thing we were building real?

“I ended up like this, Scarlett, because your father decided I wasn’t good for him and wanted another wolf. He rejected me without batting an eye, and now you want the same fate?” she asked, stressing her voice.

“I do not approve of this thing between you two,” she spoke, but I’d already stood to my feet and headed toward the door.

“Scarlett!” she screamed, calling after me when I opened the door.

“Maybe this once, mother, I do not need your approval. And you made the choice to stay with my father. You chose to remain his mate-not me. Do not compare my mate to yours, mother. You do not know Ryan like I do.”

BRYAN’S POV

She looked better, talked better and walked better this morning, and it did ruffle my fur. I’d opted to run for a while, seeing how distressed I was. I’d missed the feeling of shifting, and running for whatever feels like miles and miles. I wanted the wind in my face, but then it would only mean I was somehow trapped away from Scarlett, and that was a risk I wasn’t willing to take.

She’d been over and under for the past six months. I’d figured it had something to do with her mother. She hasn’t responded to that text I sent. She didn’t beg for an extension for a loan, neither did she take a new one.

But today… something was different. I just couldn’t place a finger on it as of the moment. I supposed hard. My eyes dangling from side to side before reaching for the phone.

“Scarlett? Come in,” I ordered through the phone on the desk. My fingers tapped rhythmically against the hard surface of the wood while I leaned backwards in the chair, my eyes scanning through her.

“What’s going on, sir?” Scarlett asked as soon as she’d stalked into my office, standing few feet away from my table. It had been like that for six months. She’d avoided me for as long as she can and wanted to and it was making me sick.

I wanted to talk to her. To reach for her. Ever since I’d found out she needed money for her mother’s treatment it has stirred an emotion within my wolf and I…

“Are you avoiding me, Scarlett?” I questioned. She smacked her lips together, pressed it into a thin line for a moment before shuffling out a frustrated breath and nodding.

“Yes, I am. And I would rather we leave our past ties behind and focus on the job we are asked to do,” she blurted out coldly, not bothering to deny it for all she cared.

“If that would be all, sir, I’ll see you later.” She bowed again, turning on her feet, but my wolf wouldn’t have it. He reacted even before I did, bolted to my feet and yanked at her hand, sending her tumbling backwards into my chest.

We both went stiff, but I missed her warmth, and I wanted this to remain for as long as it could-except she ripped herself off me like I burned everywhere she touched.

“Don’t. Ever! Do that. Let’s make it clear, do not touch me, do not hold me closer, do not…”

“I texted you, Scarlett. You know how worried I’ve been about you?” I asked, cutting into her words. Her frown hardened.

“Stop with the texts. I’m married, remember?” she asked with a yell, frustration ringing through her words. Then she turned away again and hadn’t waited for my response or to see my reaction before yanking herself off me.

At that moment-seeing her walk away, seeing how she plainly disregarded me, seeing how she hadn’t hesitated to break the ties between us-made me realize. I wanted her. I missed her. I wasn’t willing to lose her. And yet… yet. She was married.

I wanted Scarlett back. I wanted the wolf who loved me. I didn’t know what version of her had suddenly started fooling around with other alphas and omegas, but I wanted my mate back. The one who had loved me shamelessly, openly, and wholeheartedly.

Angrily, I headed toward the finance department, pulping closer to the desk I’d seen her rest at that day, begging in tears.

“Alpha Bryan,” she greeted, trembling after realizing I wasn’t in the fit mood for chatters or smiles.

“You know what hospital Scarlett’s mother is in?” I asked curtly, ignoring all form of formalities. She nodded, swallowing hard, her knuckles paling against the desk they held firmly to.

“Yes.”

“Good. So now, you text me the address and name right now,” I ordered again before heading towards the garage.

I ignited the engine to my car and started my drive. When a message settled into my phone, checking it, I’d seen the address and the hospital name boldly displayed. Without hesitating, I swerved through lanes heading right there.

The drive had lasted few minutes before I alighted from the car towards the pack hospital, heading directly towards the receptionist. I’d stopped to a halt.

“Hi. I’m looking for a certain woman? Or a name booked under the Hamilton?” I asked slowly. The receptionist had glanced thoughtfully at me with a brief nod before glancing down at the desk.

“And you are?” she asked, holding me in a limbo. Now I’d got to think of who to pin the lie on.

“Bryan Hamilton,” I spoke, reaching out for my card and tucking it straight into her grasp. Her gaze widened immediately as she’d seen it, a loud gasp slipping through her lips.

“The seventh room up by the first floor. Here’s the card for the VIP access,” she spoke, slotting a card through to my wrist.

“Thank you… Josie?” I asked, glancing down at her name tag, knowing I’d most certainly forget who she was before I left. Heading in the direction detailed out for me, I reached for the card and slotted it in place.

With a slow creak, the door opened. And there she was. She looked different-pale, weak, thinner. Lines of frown marred her face as I drew closer to her.

“Are you… who are you?” she asked, her eyes holding familiarity to them.

“It’s me. Bryan. Scarlett’s… ex-fiancé?” I asked slowly, hoping it would ring a bell. Her gaze widened, her countenance brightening up almost immediately.

“Oh, thanks to the moon goddess, Bryan. I almost thought it was that husband of hers. How have you been?” she asked, smiling broader as I inched closer to her.

“I’ve been… fine. I only found out about your health today. And what’s this talk about her husband?” I asked, trying not to sound too curious. She held out a scoff, a croaked cough and then relaxed back onto her chair.

“Some odd-looking man. An alpha. Too powerful, too wealthy. He could have chosen someone else but chose her to be his dirty secret…”

“Some alpha?” I asked again, intending to milk out every information I could about this old alpha who’d gotten advantage of Scarlett.

“Yes, some man in a wheelchair… I believe his name was… Ryay?… Rae?… Yes, ah-Ryan. Alpha Ryan. Bound into a wheelchair.”

My heart sank on realization as my feet wobbled. It couldn’t be… it wasn’t possible… Scarlett was mated to an alpha.

And it happened to be Uncle Ryan?

Scarlett’S POV

“Come with me,” Ryan ordered as soon as he’d stormed into my space. Anger rumbling through me, my wolf didn’t like that one bit, and neither did I, to be honest. Working was beginning to seem way too hectic for me to handle, and granted the offer Ryan made, perhaps he was right.
