I wheeled towards the seating room, only to stop to a halt at the sound of a shattered sob breaking through the air. Silence had followed, only for another sob to follow. I didn’t like this one bit. I clenched my fist as I rose to my feet, taking cautious steps so as not to startle her.

Scarlett sat, her head bent between her thighs, crying. She hadn’t noticed me. And whatever it was that was bothering her-I wanted it gone. A low growl rumbled in my throat at the thought of what I’d do to anyone who had done this, who made her cry.

“Scarlett?” I called out slowly. She jerked in her seat. Her red-rimmed eyes staring back at mine for a brief moment, as though she’d imagined me there in her mind.

“Ryan?” she called out in response as I drew closer to her. My thumbs grazed across her eyes and cheeks, wiping off the tears. She didn’t pull away, didn’t say anything either. She just let me.

I leaned closer to her, a gentle kiss placed on her temple as I parted her hair away from her ears, leaning closer to whisper.

“Now Scarlett, you’ll tell me who did this to you, and I swear by the moon goddess herself, I’ll start with skinning them alive.”

Scarlett winced, shock evident in her gaze when she pulled away to look at me. Not like I had a choice in anything either-it simply made me sick seeing her that broken. And I’d let myself slip, but I didn’t care anymore. I wanted her, not just as a mate in contract, nor just as a stand-in mate of mine. I wanted this-we had to be real.

“It’s nothing… I’ll… I’ll wash up and start dinner,” she spoke, brushing it aside jokingly when I yanked her by the arm to stop her to a halt.

“This,” I spoke, gesturing at her still red eyes.

“Isn’t nothing. You crying isn’t nothing, Scarlett. I am your mate, and before that, I am an Alpha. Do I need to follow the rules of nature? I’ll be damned if I let some random fool treat my mate as he or she deems fit. So tell me, Scarlett, who made you cry?” I asked again. Scarlett parted her lips to speak-obviously she was contemplating it.

I’d seen the thrill in her eyes. She liked it-the fact that someone was willing to stand up for her. And I would kill for her if the need be. All I needed was a name.

“If you respect me by any means, you will drop this conversation, Ryan. I have no interest in repeating it or replaying those memories in my head,” she spoke before ripping her hand away from my grasp.

A snarl eased across my lips on impulse. But she hadn’t stopped either. I stood, transfixed to a spot. It was always like that with me. How had I suddenly allowed my emotions to be controlled by the likes of her? And why… Why exactly am I not willing to take a step and learn?

Why did it break me apart seeing her down? Weak and in pain? And yet why wouldn’t she let me through those cracks? I told her I didn’t care about her past, but not once had it helped out. She remained the same-cold, building her walls taller around me.

My patience was thinning. I’d begun playing it nice-for her, playing by her rules. But perhaps, going all gentle and soft wasn’t what she might need eventually… If her way wouldn’t suffice, then well-my way.

A buzz settled into her phone by the bag, her screen lighting up. A frown eased across my features seeing the name-Bryan…

What did he want?

Reaching for the phone, unlocking it hadn’t been a great feat. She’d never really hid it. Scrolling through her messages, I saw a text from Bryan.

He intended to give her the money for her mother’s treatment. He knew about her mother? Knew about her needing money and not me?

I gritted my teeth, anger coiling in me before storming over to our room, slamming the door open. Scarlett was seated in bed. Her hands into her hair before she glanced at me. At least she wasn’t crying again.

“Explain this… and you either talk fast, or I’m breaking every single bone and rib in his body,” I snarled in a dark tone that had her shivering a tad bit. Her gaze glided down into the phone, causing anger to coil in me.

“Silence? You could ask him for help but not me? Do I really have to stop playing nice to have you? Scarlett, I would stop at nothing. Get it straight-you are mine, and I do not share.”

Scarlett parted her lips to respond when a loud buzz had settled into her phone. She’d picked it up, answering the call when her gaze had widened. I could hear her heart rate thumping faster. And then the conversation over the phone-

“Miss Scarlett, we need you to sign some papers, and payment needs to be remitted. Your mother has gone into a coma and we need certain things put in place.”

“I’ll pay,” I barked into the phone, yanking it from her as I reached for my own.

“My Beta will be there. I’m her mate and an Alpha’s signature or his Beta’s would be acknowledged. I’ll meet you there in thirty minutes.” I ended the call before glancing back at Scarlett. Tears streaking across her cheeks, I wrapped my palms around hers.

“I’m here. I’m here with you, Scarlett. Everything will be just fine. Come with me, Scarlett. I’ll sort it all out,” I cooed, pulling her alongside before settling into my wheelchair and bolting toward the door.

Scarlett’S POV

SIX MONTHS LATER.

My feet bounced off and on against the tiled floor, my fingers dug between my teeth as I bit anxiously, my eyes darting across the hall for the millionth time, anxiety and panic crashing full course through me. The door swung open gently and the doctor walked in, a smile on his face.

“Mrs. Hamilton, you can come in now,” the doctor responded. It’s been six months my mother had been in a coma. I’d recalled how numb I’d felt, how everything had tunnelled out. And how swiftly Ryan had taken actions-he’d done everything, and for me. He’d exposed to the courts that he was alpha, and the heir to the Hamilton group.

That had worked. New specialists were out in place for my mother, everyone respected me twice as much. The past six months, things between Ryan and I had improved. He was always around, at my beck and call. He’s paid my entire outstanding fee for the treatment and even now, it had me waiting, churning seeing how he was late.

He usually visited often when I did, and today when I’d gotten a call from the hospital saying my mother was back, out of coma and better, he’d asked to meet me there.

Right on cue the sound of wheels on the tiled floor had drawn my attention towards him, a smile lit up on his face and mine. He stopped by my side, his fingers hooked around mine as he smiled fondly at me.

“Flowers?” I asked with a grunt and Ryan nodded before planting a chaste kiss on my cheek.

“And chocolate. Didn’t know which she’d prefer.” Then it dawned on me, Ryan hadn’t met my mother before-at least not before she was in a coma-and this would be the first time I’ll introduce my mate to her.

I smothered my palms against his hair as we both walked and wheeled past the doors into the room. My mother’s gaze found mine and she smiled fondly as I rushed toward her, throwing my arms across her neck in a warm embrace.

“I was scared, mother. Scared you’d leave me. Scared that… that… It’s been six months, mother,” I screamed. She nodded, rubbing her palms over my knuckles.

“The doctor explained just as much to me. I’m sorry I put you through all this, and the bills… he said it’s all paid for. How?”

Just then her gaze flitted over to Ryan who sat in his wheelchair. Panic striking him, his face was contorted into a thousand expressions-but topping them was… confusion, and uncertainty? He and I knew he wasn’t actually crippled. He was perfect, so why would he be so scared to present himself to my mother?

“This is my mate. He is-“

“Ryan. My name is Ryan, and I brought this for you, Rosa,” he spoke, addressing her by her first name. She accepted the gifts with a smile, when a phone call had settled into his phone.

“I’m sorry but I have to take this,” he spoke. My mom nodded with a smile as he turned away.

“I’ll meet you right out,” I called after him. But he was already gone. I sank into the chair next to my mother and her expression turned sour almost immediately.

“That’s your… mate!?” she asked and I nodded, not understanding what she was alluding at.

“When you’d told me you were mated, I believed it was Bryan. That you both had somehow managed to work things out. And then it’s this, this, this Ryan?” she asked, scrunching up her nose in plain irritation and annoyance.

I’d chosen not to tell her he was Bryan’s cousin-intentionally-and also ticked out the fact that he was a Hamilton. I hated her reaction. She wasn’t ever picky.

“He only married you because you were the only willing option, didn’t he?” she asked with a snicker again. It wouldn’t take a genius to know she was speaking of his wheelchair.

“Mother, I’m no different! I only agreed to be his mate because you needed the hospital bills, remember? The insurance was only if I’m mated to someone in the New Stone Pack, and he was nice enough to offer me the chance,” I spat back just with equal anger and venom as she’d done.
