He was alpha, owned and ruled a pack. What could I ever want? I didn’t need to work a day in my life having gotten mated to him, except of course there was also Byrn breathing down on my neck every chance he got, making my working space hectic for me.
Staggering to my feet, anxiety reeled in from my wolf. I felt her uncertainty down to the bones, her fear and worry as we walked through the floors towards the top of the building.
A few feet away from us he was pacing around, grumbling a few inaudible words. And then he stopped, his red-rimmed eyes staring back at us.
“You slut!” Bryan screamed, a low snarl ripping off his lips, causing a light whimper and a startled gasp to recoil from my lips at his sudden retort.
“Sleeping around wasn’t enough, hurting me wasn’t good enough and now you are mated to my uncle? Oh you’ve got great greed, Scarlett, going after an alpha bloodline, an alpha to the Newstone Pack? Going all ahead for the first true blood in the Hamilton family line, and… what more? To hurt me? Make me jealous? Tell me, Scarlett, how low are you willing to go?”
My wolf was antsy now, all full force and claws. A feral growl rumbled through my throat on hearing Bryan’s accusations carelessly tossed around, and every tad bit of me was itching to shift into my form, hand over the leash to my wolf and let her claw him to death if need be.
“I never lied. You just always had been quick to conclude I was involved with some odd omega and Ryan had no intent to make it something public either, so that’s all. I’ll leave now.”
I turned on my feet heading towards the entrance when he snatched at my hands, slamming me forcefully against the wall, both of his hands at either side of my head, caging me between him.
“Get off me, Bryan!” I snapped, shoving my palms against his chest to no avail.
“Or what? You’ll growl? Scream? Beg?” he asked with a menacing tone and a mischievous glint in his eyes. I couldn’t fight him off; he had alpha bloodlines running through his veins, and comparing that to an omega like myself wasn’t any good.
Except I’d grown repulsed by him. My wolf stood on edge, snarling, preying, waiting for a chance to pounce. The mere proximity was suffocating us-he didn’t carry the scent of our mate. Ryan… I wanted Ryan. I wanted to be in his safe hands, and not with Bryan whom I’d begun to dread.
“He’s crippled! He’s… he’s… he’s not good enough for you. You want someone from the Hamilton bloodline?” Bryan asked, leaning closer to me, his lips planting against my chin, earning another snarl from me.
My claws lunged at him, scratching at his sides. A low growl rumbled free from his throat as he closed the gap between us, pressing himself firmer against me.
“I’ll be there-if you want a Hamilton bloodline, I’ll offer to take you in. If you want an alpha that bad, I’ll consider you. I’ll mate with you and claim you as mine… we can do it your way or mine. Now!” he threatened, the same growl attached to the end of his words.
I took a moment to stop. His eyes were pitch black, his wolf was in control now, no longer him. I’d seen the lust and possessiveness in them. Hell… he would mark me. Forcefully.
“No… no… Bryan… I… you have Maya, she’s your mate soon, you can have her, not just me, I…”
A dark bark of laughter coursed free from his lips, sending chills down my spine. I was barely holding it down. Fear trailed down my spine at the sudden realization: if he marked me-if he dug his fangs through my skin-I’d carry his scent. I’d be claimed by him, bound to him for life. Mated and owned by Bryan, whom I loathed.
“Think I give a fuck about Maya?” he asked, as though he was bored of the conversation already.
“I only did it to get back at you. I went for your sister to make you hurt, only that. You’ve always been smart, haven’t you? Always a step ahead. Always the one with the power, the control…” he spoke in a low tone, a shiver attached to the ends of his words.
My eyes were rounding, almost bulging out of their sockets as his fangs grazed over my collarbone and close to my pulse point. He was posturing-letting me know he was in control.
“You don’t need Ryan. You have me! If you want to be the one at the top, I’ll kill him for you. Then you’ll be the true mate to the true heir. The one heir left of the trueblood. You’ll be my Luna. And I’ll… I’ll be-“
A loud screeching wail cut off his words. He’d gotten distracted. I’d taken my shot. Knowing it was the only chance I’d get, I jabbed my claws against his eyeball. It had hurt, judging by his still frame, but I didn’t wait to find out how much impact it held.
As I jolted to my feet, scurrying down the halls, running as fast as I could, panting heavily, pain eating at my insides…
“You… get back here, Scarlett! I’ll… I’ll-“
I slammed the door behind me, bolting toward the main office floor. I could hear his feet scuffling behind me hastily. Finally down to a public space, I felt better. Safer. But what I needed was Ryan.
Hastily, I stormed toward the main entrance, my phone wrapped tight around my fingers as I dialed through Ryan’s number.
“Ryan… I need you. I… I need you now,” I stammered into thephone, panting heavily, my wolf purring in contentment.
RYANS POV.
I bounced from knee to knee, pacing by the window, my eyes peeled directly at the garage. My wolf and I had been uneasy all through.
“She’s safe. She’s safe, okay, Beta Derek says she’ll be here soon, with him,” I repeated like a mantra, trying to convince my bubbling wolf, which seemed as though he was about to go on a killing spree. I’d never heard Scarlett sound so scared, so desperate, so needy. For someone who’d always enjoyed doing things herself and tried her best to stand out tall, it had gotten to me as a shock. That phone call had me dead worried.
Immediately, I’d asked Beta Derek to pick her up. I couldn’t trust myself enough to stay seated in the back and play cripple while Beta Derek drove.
So I’d waited back home, and anxiety coursed through my veins. The car drove past the gates towards the garage. Beta Derek alighted and held out the door for Scarlett. She looked ghastly. Her face paled of color. Her lips pressed flush.
Beta Derek hadn’t bothered walking through the door. He’d escorted her towards the door, gave a curt bow in the direction of the window, and turned back towards the car to drive away. I’d pushed open the door on impulse, wrapping my arms around Scarlett.
She sank into my arms-her feet gave in, her strangled cry burst free from her lips as I cradled her in my arms, lifting her before heading towards the chair.
“Scarlett… you are safe now, baby, you are here with me.”
She nuzzled her head deep into my chest as I held her firmer against my heart, letting my warmth engulf her. And then it struck. His scent. All over her.
A snarl coursed off my lips, startling Scarlett, who jolted backward in the process. I swallowed thickly, my eyes darting around her for any sort of harm inflicted on her.
“What happened!” I asked, trying to sound as calm as I could, but with my wolf scratching at the surface, baying for Bryan’s blood, it was hard staying seated and sounding all sane when all I wanted was to rip out his windpipe with my claws for going so close to something that was mine.
What part wasn’t he getting? Scarlett was my mate. Mine to mark. Mine to protect! Mine. Mine. Mine.
“He… he found out about you,” she shivered, raising her bloodshot, tear-stained eyes to glance at me.
“I’m sorry. I am so sorry. I didn’t mean… I didn’t mean to. It’s just-he found my mark and he came to work, and he-he…” she stammered, holding her voice in again.
“He what, Scarlett?” I asked, trying to keep my voice low, only to fail.
“He threatened me. I was scared… so scared, Ryan. I needed you. I-“
I pressed my lips against both of her eyes, gently kissing away her tears before finally staring back at her, raising her chin with my index finger.
“You have me now. I’m sorry I wasn’t there. But you know I’ll never let you get hurt, Scarlett. You know that, right?” I asked, practically cooing the words into her ears. She smiled before dropping her head in a curt nod. All the tension from her shoulders seemed to have eased up a bit.
“I’m sorry. My decisions are final. You will not be working with him in that place anymore, Scarlett. You are my mate. And my responsibility. The thought of him hovering around you is something I hate,” I spat bitterly, not bothering to hide the anger in my words.
Scarlett’s huge, tear-stained eyes looked up at me. She parted her lips as though to put forth an argument, but I was done. I’d made my decision. It was final.
“No, Scarlett! My mind is made up. Come, let’s run a bath for you.” I eased up in my words, my jaw clenched, my fists clenched as well at my sides, and I turned away from Scarlett, heading up into our room.
I’d heard the faint dragging of her footsteps behind me as well. She hadn’t seemed to be in a dire situation, but she didn’t seem pleased either. She’ll get around to it.
