“Yes. So have everything prepared for tonight,” I ordered Beta Derek, who seemed more stunned at me reaffirming my words. He held my gaze for a brief moment but had said nothing. He didn’t need to. I could hear his thoughts loud and clear, even from our locked gazes.

Beta Derek had served beneath me for years, and I’d easily understand every gesture of his-just as he understood mine.

“It’s time she meets my family… it’s time she takes her place as my mate. This time-for real,” I announced. And if stunned had been my choice of words earlier, it was an understatement, judging by how rigid Beta Derek was.

Reluctantly, he’d given two drops of his head as a nod and turned away toward the door, saying nothing else.

“I’m meeting… your family?” Scarlett whispered again, her voice breaking out as I nodded. She would.

Maybe it was about time she knew me for real-see that she didn’t need to be scared of me. Perhaps it was about time I began building something serious with her.

“Yes. Tonight. And you’ll be fine. I already told you, my parents are dead… and my grandfather, he isn’t that bad. Right around the edges a bit, and right after him is my nephew. Just those-nothing else. And there won’t be an argument or more excuses, Scarlett. You are coming with me… tonight.”

Scarlett’S POV

The door pushed open as Alpha Ryan and I made our way into the house. Fear and panic coursed through my veins with each step we took. He’d picked out new dresses for me, complimented me, and dare I say, he’d stolen several glances at me all through the drive down here.

The first step I’d taken had me halting in my tracks. This house… it looked familiar. I’d seen it somewhere. Yet I couldn’t remember where or how. I’d never been here before, I would’ve noticed something from the entrance, yet the interior-it called out to me.

“Forgotten something?” Alpha Ryan asked, smiling up at me. I sighed, nodding negative before moving along with him as he wheeled himself forward.

“I see you really did bring her,” a smile and older voice echoed in the vast space of the house. Glancing upwards, our eyes locked, and every fear coursing through my nerves had locked in place. Reality dawned on me as the memory assaulted my mind, all swarming in at once.

“Good evening to you too, grandfather. This is my mate, Scarlett,” Alpha Ryan offered in a curt tone, glancing between his grandfather and me. Shock spasmed through me as my eyes locked with that of his grandfather’s whom I knew too well in the past..

“Theo…” I retorted beneath shaky breaths. He scrunched up his nose with a snicker in response to my word.

“She’s not just some impromptu mate, she’s also rude? Where did you meet her?” Alpha Theo spoke. Ryan glanced in my direction but had chosen to say nothing on how I’d known the name of his grandfather when he hadn’t spoken a word of it to me.

“She’s just so excited to see you. Maybe we should have things slow and stop scaring her with your ice-cold front-it’s not working,” Ryan smirked in a joking tone with his grandfather, who turned in the direction of a hall. The door opened and dishes had been lifted, the maids all scurrying around on sight.

“Well, have your seat, Scarlett. And I think it’s time you tell me more about you. About your family. See, my grandson here decided it was best for him to pick out a mate on his own when I’d clearly given him offers, and I do not think you are any compatible with him, if all you do is sway humbly with that stale face,” Elder Theo asserted again.

But with each word he spoke, my body thrummed. He didn’t recognize me. Didn’t recognize my voice. It’s been years. But still…

“My nephew would be coming soon too. He’ll be joining us at the table and probably have a lot to say about his new mate as well.” nephew?… Did he mwan?. Was this?….

With that, I jolted back to my feet, slamming my sweaty palms against the table, startling everyone.

“Are you alright?” Alpha Ryan asked, true worry evident in his voice. I nodded, sedate, caressing my temples with my throat dry and burning up in every spring second.

“I need… I think… I might be a little stressed,” I lied. Well, it wasn’t entirely much of a lie, but it wasn’t the truth either.

“Anyone out there?” Alpha Ryan yelled, as the door swung open and a pack guard stormed in on command.

“Show her to the room prepared for us. We’ll be sleeping tonight and she needs rest now,” Alpha Ryan ordered. I hadn’t bothered nodding farewell or making an apology to Elder Theo as I turned on my feet along with the guards. I’d kept my silence. My body trembled with each step, and as soon as the guard had walked out of the room with the door shut, I slumped to the ground.

My heart hammering in my chest. This was wrong. This was a mistake. This was… it wasn’t possible.

Elder Theo had been the same person Bryan had shown me as his grandfather when we had been together. He’d showed me some of his old pictures, which I instinctively recognized-the background of the house as the same image-and compared it to the home of Alpha Ryan.

It made sense now… the voices were finally slotting together. How damn gullible had I been? How confused was I not to have noticed? The truth had been before me all along.

The name coincidences… the heirlooms, of course. Bryan had once spoken of having an uncle. A grandfather to his family too but was not in the public light after he’d gotten into an accident-and now this.

It had been Alpha Ryan. It had been the older grandson of the Hamilton family which had been in an accident years ago.

And Bryan must have kept his identity secret as a son from the Hamiltons for years… but why? A billion and one thoughts raced through my mind, and I felt bitter with each passing second.

It was impossible for Alpha Ryan not to have known it was his own nephew whom I’d dated in the past. He must have seen Bryan. Must have connected the dots before I could.

Was this some plot for revenge? Some game which possibly Bryan had drafted to get back at me? It was too good to be true. Just when I’d gotten mated to his uncle, he’d bought my workplace and became my boss. And Alpha Ryan seemed to have asked me to be his mate right when I was desperate-when I had been stood up, when I needed it the most and would have said yes to anyone and anything.

This was no coincidence. That my-I was mated to an Alpha. Mated to the uncle of my ex-fiancé. What did that make me now? An aunt to my first love?

Nothing I said or thought could change the fact that I was now involved with the Hamilton brothers. And I’d dated the first grandson of the true Alpha’s bloodline and was now mated to the older grandson of the Hamilton family.

RYAN’S POV

“You didn’t have to talk to her that way!” I half-snapped at Elder Theo, my grandfather. His stoic demeanour cracked as soon as I’d spoken, and I could see the shock now evident on his face.

I’d never spoken to him in such a rude manner before. It had been one thing amongst alphas to know the hierarchy, knowing who we could raise our voice to. It gave us that little ability, except I’d never slipped, not even once after my accident.

Yet here I was, defending Scarlett in a manner no one would have expected. I’d only kept my core calm because I’d hate for anyone or everyone to make a fool of me, to judge me wrong, to screw me over. And yet-here we were.

“I made my intentions clear. You were to mate with Maya. It would have done you better, given you more benefits and pack alliances than whoever that… nobody is.”

“Scarlett,” I huffed out along with a breath of frustration.

“Her name is Scarlett, and you will treat her with respect because she’s my mate, and I’ll be marking her soon, and you had better get used to it. Maybe you’re right, I did marry her to spite you. But things changed. I won’t let anyone talk down on her.”

Angrily, I turned my wheels around toward the bedroom, my old bedroom which I’d long avoided.

“You know… at least your nephew was able to make a proper choice in mates. Don’t come crawling to me when she ruins whatever façade of happiness you have on at the moment,” my grandfather called out from behind, causing me to stop wheeling for a moment.

“And then what? I’ve made my choice and I intend to live with it. Whoever I get mated to isn’t your concern. And tell me, when have I ever crawled to you for help? I didn’t when my parents died, did I? And I certainly wouldn’t start now,” I deadpanned.

Silence weighed heavily between us, but I hadn’t turned to look how hurt he was. After all, my mother had been his daughter, and it was a sore wound reopened. Except I’d survived back then all on my own, refusing vehemently any offers that were made-and I achieved it. Myself.

Pushing the door to the room open, Scarlett’s bloodshot red eyes from crying locked with mine. She remained on the floor, snot running off her nose, her cheeks painted with rivers running down her eyes and face over to her neck.

“You knew… all along, didn’t you?” she asked. And I stopped. I’d known we’d have this conversation. I was wondering how long it would take her before she pieced the broken pieces together. It took long, but finally everything had clicked together right in place.

“You lied to me,” she muttered beneath her breaths. Hissing, her voice was scratchy, and I knew maybe I’d gutted her emotions way too deep this time.

“Scarlett, I had to pick out a mate. But it also meant I had to run several checks to be certain you fit the criteria.”
