“Criteria?” she asked with a bitter bark of laughter.

“Criteria to be what? Ridiculed? Made into a clown? You… you knew and you said nothing? The trip to my family home in the Bluestone Pack-was that even a coincidence?” she asked, and I nodded. I’d been too worried about her. After all, I knew she had not shared great ties with her father, stepmother, and stepsister.

“Then the trip to Fierce Claw Pack… I mean, was that a coincidence too?” she asked. This time I didn’t nod. As soon as I’d seen her tear, I knew Bryan was up to something. And the Hamiltons… we could be crafty and sneaky when we wanted to.

“So what is this? The mating? Choosing me? Was this a petty act for revenge? Is this all Bryan’s doing? Is he happy now? What’s the next scheme in the game? After all, who could care about an omega who’d sold herself into being mated just to get some health insurance?”

A low growl rumbled in my throat as I listened to her speak. She was talking down on herself and crying. And it was all because of me.

“This ain’t about Bryan, Scarlett! It’s about us! This is-“

“Stop it, Ryan!” she retorted, cutting harshly into my words while glaring down at me.

“This is absolutely wrong. You misunderstand this. Bryan had nothing to do with this. It was a coincidence at first and then I knew what happened and then…”

“Then what? You decided why not make a bloody fool of her all at once? I’m mated to you! My ex’s uncle… someone whose desperation had revenge on me and you call that a coincidence?” she asked.

I said nothing, just watched as anger and a murderous glint flashed through her orbs. She thinks I used her.

“Bryan is out of this, stop bringing it up, it makes me sick!” I screamed, anger coiling in my veins.

“Oh! You make me sick! You do! Bryan does, everyone in this family does… Because you both knew how easy it was to toy with my heart… was I easy? Did you both laugh at it? Between yourselves… at how fidgety and lame I was not to have noticed sooner?” she asked.

I clenched my fists against the wheels tighter, grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw.

“Leave Bryan out of this… I chose you because I wanted you, and not because I was hoping to play a game of petty revenge with my nephew.”

“Yeah… you’d say anything, won’t you? But you lied to me! Used me! You-“

“Enough, Scarlett!” I retorted, standing off from my wheelchair and storming towards her. She flinched as soon as I drew closer, fear visible in her gaze stabbing me in the chest. She was scared of me… she really believed I’d hit her? Or worst, he’d…? Her past trauma hadn’t healed.

“You… y-you can… walk?” Scarlett asked as she dragged her gaze from my hair to my feet and then back up to meet my gaze once again.

BRYAN’S POV

My eyes scanned through the folder in my hands when a knock settled on the door. I tilted my head in the direction, watching as the door swung open. Scarlett made her way in slowly, biting on her lower lips anxiously.

Nausea rose in my throat at the sight. Just the person I wanted to see. We had issues that needed to be sorted, and perhaps now was the time.

“How may I help you?” I asked coldly, unable to hide the bitterness still etched in my tone. My eyes narrowed in her direction as I tapped with a docile rhythm against my desk.

“I need my salary in advance this month. It’s just that actually, something important and personal suddenly came up, and I’d been asked to meet with the main boss to be granted acess saying certain things had changed,” she asserted hastily.

A snort escaped my lips in response to her words, earning a frown from her. I knew it was hard for her coming to ask me, but there it was. Her pride… one thing I once cherished all the time had been dashed down to the floor.

“There’s the thing about you… I’ve checked to see-you’ve asked for your money in advance for years already… please do tell me now. What exactly is the problem about? Those old omegas you’ve been sleeping around… aren’t they able to sort out your fees? Too poor to keep up?” I asked on purpose, trying to rile her up-and it worked.

She gawked at me, a low snarl easing from her lips before she backed down again, judging by how hard I’d glared back at her.

“Fine, that’s all I came here for anyway. I’ll leave now,” she spoke, when I’d slammed something onto the table before her eyes.

“What’s that?” she asked, with a hint of curiosity evident in her voice. I smirked before nodding my head at it again.

“How about you take a look at it yourself?” I asked in response, keeping my words plain as she reached for it. Her gaze widened and her nose spasmed visibly from shock as she scanned her eyes through the pictures.

They were pictures of her… half-naked… her hair a mess… her post-sex haze evident on her face. Shit was blurry, but she knew who it was. And I knew who it was as well.

“You… where… where did you get this from?” she asked, her lips quivering with fear as she spoke. I ignored her, whatever it was she sputtered when I slammed my fist into the desk, standing abruptly to my feet.

“It doesn’t end with you, does it? You always sleep around with men of all sorts! It’s always you! It’s your fault, time after time. Even now you are married-tell me. How many men have you slept with again?” I asked harshly, yelling at her.

Tears streaked off her eyes to her cheeks as she stared at the pictures while I’d called off to the floor.

“Who. Who gave these to you?” she asked again. This time, a louder scoff escaped my lips as I let out a humorless bark of laughter. She’s got all that audacity.

“How many had there been that you don’t even remember when this had happened!” I asked with disbelief and irritation etched into my tone.

She swallowed thickly, with her face a damp mess of tears. She stormed out of my office, running as fast as she could.

My heart shattered at the sight.

How could I still love this woman?

How could I still be attracted to her? After the ordeal she’d put me through? After the mess she had me lingered on… I’d gotten the pictures a day before, delivered to my doorstep. Why exactly had someone taken this picture and sent it to me?

Why did she need money? I was rich now. Wealthy… I’d come out to her as an Alpha. I was enough… I’d given her the offer of being my mistress. It was she who hadn’t taken the objective, not me. It was she who’d tossed me down… and for what?

To come crawling back at work begging for scraps? Or to keep sleeping with Alphas, Omegas, or Gammas of every other type?

I grounded my teeth in annoyance, recalling how I’d heard from Gamma Hans about the attack, about how he’d been asked by the Alpha of the Fierce Claw pack to be prosecuted. I’d heard the rumors surrounding the fact that it had been my uncle Ryan who’d given those orders.

That night, at the Bluestone pack… when I’d met with Maya’s parents. Her step-sister-I’d seen her get embarrassed by her own family, and I felt way too much pity for her. I went after her only to see my uncle Ryan help her into a car… he came for her.

He was having an affair with her, even after she’d gotten married…

I reached for my phone, dialing through a number which surprisingly had gotten answered without much ringing.

“Uncle Ryan… ah… nice to meet you, it’s been a long time we saw each other. How do you feel about meeting up later tonight for dinner?” I asked slowly, waiting for his response. A smile curled on my lips, knowing he wouldn’t see what I had coming.

“Today? Pfft… well I can make it work,” my uncle Alpha Ryan responded into the phone.

“I’ll text you the spot. We do have a lot of catching up to do. And I think I have a pleasant surprise for you as well,” I responded into the phone before ending the call.

I strutted over to the pictures scattered, picking them one by one with a grin on my lips.

Whatever games Scarlett was playing, I’ll have it curbed… once and for all. And today… I’ll make alpha Ryan understand that he couldn’t have Scarlett.
