“Alpha Ryan,” he stuttered in between gritted teeth, lines of frowns evident on his face as I wheeled closer to them, anger bubbling in me.
“How dare you lay a finger on what’s mine?” I asked, the question rolling off my lips even before I’d gotten a chance to think of them. I’d never felt this obsessive or possessive, and it was raking every last nerve in me not to let my wolf rip apart the gamma standing before me. Disgust crashed into me. He looked old… way too old to be messing around with her.
“I… we… it’s a misunderstanding, we were just… talking,” he stuttered, his voice failing him as he dropped his gaze to my feet. I swallowed thickly, a feral growl rumbling in my throat as my gaze darted over to Scarlett, whose face was void of colors, her body trembling, her eyes looked so distant like she wasn’t here… I could feel her fear. Her anxiety.
“I’ll make you pay for this… but I have things much more important to settle too,” I blurted out, before wheeling up to Scarlett.
Sparks ignited as soon as I touched her. Color returned to her face and she let out a sigh she had been holding as her distant eyes had life flickering back into them.
“Alpha Ryan,” she stuttered. I could see from her slurred words and wobbly feet she’d also been drinking. I scrunched my nose up in disgust at Gamma Hans. I’d always known him to prey on younger women, but it wasn’t my pack and it hadn’t been my business-until now, when he’d decided to mess with what was mine.
I wheeled away towards the door with Scarlett walking after me. We’d gotten to the car in silence. Neither of us brought anything up as an unusual tension filled the space between us.
“I’m taking you to the hotel I checked in,” I finally spoke to see Scarlett’s dreadful gaze locked on mine. She looked scared… she should have been, and I’d make Gamma Hans pay for it.
The silence ensued till we’d alighted from the car and then back towards the room.
“I didn’t do it on purpose. I didn’t. It was a misunderstanding. I wasn’t seducing him,” she spoke as soon as I closed the door shut, trembling, her darkness bouncing.
“I know,” I responded, scrunching up my nose from annoyance. Did she really believe I’d blame the entire situation on her? Did she believe I’d take the side of that old, shameless gamma and blame my own mate?
“You… believe me?” she asked, tears welling up in her eyes. I swallowed thickly, wheeling closer to her, my own heart hammering louder as I passed her a reassuring nod and urged her to sit in bed with a smile spread across my face.
“I know and I trust you, don’t I? I’m telling you I believe you. And I know you have nothing to do with that old man… although it does seem as though you’d need rest. How much did you drink during that meeting?” I asked, irritation and anger welling up in me once again at the thought of it-of what would have happened if I hadn’t gotten there on time.
“I didn’t count. But I’m fine. I really am. I’m just… I’m worried. I was scared, Ryan,” she admitted, bursting into strangled sobs, burying her head into my chest. My wolf reacted before I did as I stroked her hair soothingly, my body warmed up with each touch, tingles down my spine, as I cupped her head up to wipe the tears from her eyes.
“Don’t cry, Scarlett. I promised to protect you. And I did. And I always would. You are safe now. Here with me,” I reassured her. And that had stirred an emotion behind her eyes as they sparkled.
“You always come for me,” she uttered in between sobs. I nodded with a smile. I’d gotten her text almost too late. But I had decided to travel down to the Fierceclaw pack. I knew Bryson had been aiming at a deal with them and I knew the first person he’d go off to was Gamma Hans.
Given his terrible track, and knowing Bryson was foolishly taking Scarlett along, I’d almost taken the wheels myself to drive-knowing if anything happened to her, I’d never live with myself.
“I’m sorry I was late. But you’re fine,” I reassured her again.
And for a moment, time stilled between us. All I could see was her. My reflection in her eyes, how she made me feel, how anxious I’d felt today at the thought of someone hurting her, how angry I was to see her scared and crying, how miserable I felt at the inability to soothe her faster. I knew it now-she meant more to me.
Just as that realization snapped everything into place, I felt it. A bond. A bond I’d shared with her all along. I cupped her cheeks into my palm, pulling her face closer. I waited for any sort of resistance from her.
But her eyes dropped to my lips and back to my eyes as she tilted her head, leaning into me. I gave in-to the sweet feeling of the kiss. My lips pressed against hers hungrily and greedily as she parted her lips in a moan, granting me access to slide my tongue over hers as I sucked on her lips.
She kissed me back, harder, tasting the warmth of my tongue and the feeling of hers brushing past mine as I greedily allowed it.
Her face flushed and her body pressed against mine as she moaned into the kiss again while my palm crept to the nape of her neck and our tongues intertwined, sucking kissed breathless like our lives depended on it.
RYAN’S POV
Scarlett stirred in sleep, mumbling beneath her breath while I watched, my usual calm expression intact, except beneath, I was a mess. Every bit of the façade was cracking and leaving void spaces for her to see through.
I kissed her. She kissed me back… and I’d almost slipped-let myself off that restraint I’d so carefully placed myself on. It made me sick down to my bones to see how badly I’d fallen for this woman.
How my wolf had tethered to hers. How we shared a bond I hadn’t acknowledged right on time previously. It all made sense to me now. Smacking my lips together, a sigh eased across my lips with my shoulders slouched as she finally parted her eyes.
Clearing my throat, I hurried my gaze away from her.
“Alpha Ryan…” she stuttered with a yawn, as though glancing her mind through the recent activities, and then I’d seen the light come back to her eyes.
“I-I… yesterday…” she stuttered as though contemplating what to think and do, and there it was again-that uncertainty within her.
“Yesterday was lovely, Scarlett, and I don’t know if you might want me filling in the details for the kiss again-I’d love to, but I have other urgent things to tend to back at my pack. I’m leaving today, and you are coming with me,” I spoke with a soothing and reassuring smile. Invariably, her tense shoulders relaxed as she nodded again, not putting up an argument with me or asking questions, even when she knew her job was on the line.
“I’ll wait, ready,” she whispered, as I wheeled myself out of the room toward the main waiting room of the hotel suite I’d lodged in.
“Good morning, Alpha Ryan,” Beta Derek greeted as soon as he saw me, bowing slightly in courtesy. I waved at him, gesturing that he walked closer.
“Have you handled the situation?” I asked in hushed tones, knowing Scarlett was just in a room over and I wasn’t willing to risk her overhearing this.
“Yes. He’s being punished as it is. The contracts he gathered are ruined. I’ve reported several cases of assault to the Alpha of the Fierce Claw Pack, gathered some other dirt on him, and it’s all working out. He’ll be prosecuted today… openly,” Beta Derek explained.
I arched up my eyebrows in a questioning manner in his direction.
“And did Alpha Kierran get my message?” I asked again once Beta Derek had given another nod. Alpha Kierran was Alpha of the Fierce Claw Pack, and I’d reached out to him, making my orders for Gamma Hans clear.
“Yes. He said he understood your request and he’ll see to it that it’s just as you want… each finger of Gamma Hans would be severed, and then… he’ll be beheaded.”
A smile curled up the sides of my lips hearing Derek’s confirmation on my orders-that had been exactly as I’d planned-and finally he’ll make atonement. Perhaps then the word would spread, that no one-not even an Alpha, a Beta, or a Gamma, or any other pack-should ever lay a finger on Scarlett. She’s my mate. And now I knew I was more attached to her than I’d believed.
The kiss was evidence of that. I’d let myself slip. And if I hadn’t restrained myself, we would have done a whole lot into the morning. Things my wolf definitely agreed with.
The door pushed open on cue and Scarlett made her way in, still looking timid and shaky.
“Mrs. Hamilton. Good morning. I’ll get the car prepared for us,” Beta Derek spoke, greeting and turning towards the door.
“Wait. There’s something you should prepare as well,” I called out to Beta Derek, stopping him in his tracks.
“And may I know what that is, Alpha Ryan?” Beta Derek asked, confusion etched on his facial features-after all, I hadn’t spoken to him about this. Hadn’t reminded him of any extra activities added into today’s schedule.
“Are you free today? Anything you would be doing?” I asked Scarlett, who shook her head immediately without even hesitating about it.
“Good. Now I want you to clear out everything on my schedule today. I need a new pair of dresses delivered to the pack house in the size of Scarlett-but different designs. We will be meeting my family tonight.”
Silence had ensued between all three of us, no one saying a word to the other.
Confusion. Terrified, stunned look evident on Beta Derek’s face at my sudden decision.
“You… want to take her? To your family?” Beta Derek questioned as though he hadn’t heard me right.
