I stood from the wheelchair once again, hovering above her.
“Scarlett? Can you hear me?” I asked, slowly, staring intently at her.
“Bryan… save me… please Bryan… don’t leave me… please,” she pleaded in her sleep, whimpering again. This time a tear slid off her cheek and anger rolled in me in waves.
Anxiety. Irritation. And jealousy! And topping it was the protectiveness.
Who the hell was this Bryan? Was he an alpha too? An omega? Was he an unmated wolf? A brother?? A friend? As much as I tried to check out all possible boxes, I couldn’t stop the irritation gnawing against my senses. It made me sick to my nerves.
“Alpha Ryan, is anything wrong?” Beta Derek asked as soon as he’d walked into the room. I cleared my throat, feeling somewhat queasy, before crawling off her, realizing the compromising position we were both in.
Beta Derek averted his gaze, clearing his throat awkwardly as I settled back into the wheelchair.
“She will be fine, the healer assured me,” Beta Derek asserted, earning a glare from me. Why exactly did he feel he needed to reassure me about her safety? It’s not like I cared much or anything.
“When you chose her, gave me her file, what exactly did you find out about her background?” I asked, trying to steer off any form of curiosity and act as though I wasn’t entirely interested in the response.
“Nothing much. She’d been an omega in Bluestone Pack. She lived by the rules. She did seem to be in urgent need of money and would do anything to get her hands on a man to mark her for free medical treatment on her mother… I presented you with the file, didn’t you check through it?” Beta Derek asked, making certain to be very cautious with his question.
I cleared my throat again. I hadn’t bothered reading too much. I heard she was desperate for money, and she was the only one I hadn’t hesitated to ask to be marked by me.
“Anything about a personal relationship?” I questioned again, and Beta Derek nodded.
“Yeah, I think. There was a previous lover of hers. His name was… Bryan, I think?”
That had gotten my attention as I glanced at him, not bothering to keep a nonchalant expression anymore.
“He’s actually an alpha now… and I’d kept tabs on him just in case…he’s well-off, and recently bought the company Scarlett works in.”
Ryan’s POV
I didn’t know who this Bryan was, but I hated the idea of him hovering around Scarlett. He certainly was up to something. If I wanted to stalk my lover too, I would have bought everywhere she worked in, lived in, ate in. And he’d only been smart enough to buy her company.
“Look more into him. I don’t like the fact that he’s been hovering around. He might be up to something…, and I don’t want anyone jeopardizing my plans.” I retorted bitterly, the words heavy with venom as my gaze glided back towards Scarlett, who seemed to look better although she was muttering in her sleep.
“Understood, Alpha Ryan.” Beta Derek spoke.
“You can leave for today. The Thompsons should be back already. If I need any help, I’ll get them. And yes… don’t forget to replace what I asked you to.” I ordered. Beta Derek bowed and nodded before excusing himself toward the door.
Scarlett parted her eyes right on cue to glance at her unfamiliar surroundings. Her throat seemed sore, her eyes bulging out of her sockets.
“Where am I?” she asked, before coughing. I reached for a glass of water, handing it over to her.
She’d collected it from me with that polite smile and nod again, earning a frown from me. Each time she was around me, she acted all polite, straight, emotionally closed. But when she’d spoken of Bryan in her dreams, she sounded… desperate. She yearned for him.
“Who is Bryan?” I blurted out even before I’d gotten a chance to think it over.
Scarlett choked on water, coughing continuously as I tapped her by the back, yanking the cup from her, worry coursing through my veins. It had taken few moments of soothing before she’d finally relaxed, while avoiding my gaze entirely.
“Bryan… he’s… well…” she stuttered. Then my eyes had caught a sight of a cut on her chin. Anger bubbled in me. Something in me snapped. All I fucking saw at that moment was red.
“Did he do this to you?” I questioned, pointing at her jaw. Something flickered in her eyes but it shone too fast for me to place a name on it.
“No. It… I was just clumsy at work, that’s all.”
It was a lie. Of course she knew I’d find out. She’d never really lied to me since we’ve begun this marriage deal, since I offered to mark her as mine.
But this was a first. And it was because of him-because of Bryan.
“He was my lover… it’s all in the past, that’s all. I’m sorry if I mentioned his name.” She apologized, this time sincerity evident in her words. I’d given a light grunt and a sneer. It was all in the past she’d claimed, but she conveniently left out the piece where he was her boss now.
And as a matter of fact, they’d see each other, run into each other for as long as she remained there… working. An inkling of an idea struck my mind but I shoved it down.
She was meant to be my mate in belief, the wolf who carried my mark. Acting this cold and telling her to stop her work might sound too serious, and I didn’t want her thinking I’d begun to develop feelings for her or anything of sorts.
“I do not feel bothered about your past, Scarlett. I’m not interested in competing with an ex-lover either… You are my mate now. To every other person, you are my mate. To us we know it’s merely for convenience. But I marked you… Scarlett, you carry the mark of an Alpha, and the last thing I’ll do is share what should be mine… I loathe when you call another man’s name… or another man’s scar.” I groaned. The words rolled off my lips bit by bit with a tone of finality to them.
Reaching for my drawer, I’d picked up a soothing ointment, rubbed it gently against her jaw, holding my breath and trying to keep my actions precise. Only that Scarlett on the other hand was all shades of red. Her face flushed with color. Her heart hammering hard against her chest as I took more time than necessary rubbing the cream on her jaw.
It was good to see that I still had this effect on her.
“That’s all,” I spoke, cutting into the silence, moving away from her.
“I’m sorry, I… I’m sorry, Alpha Ryan. You’ve been nice to me. You provided all I want and I’ll steer out of trouble.” She apologized again. But all I’d focused on was the fact that she addressed me as Alpha Ryan. Right… we were back to that.
Whatever sickening look was on my face seemed to pass the message across to Scarlett. Her huge rounded eyes had fallen back to the bed and away from my gaze. She looked sad, like she’d hurt me on purpose even when I knew I was overplaying the entire situation. It was out of her control. She was unconscious.
“I’m sorry, I meant Ryan… It won’t happen again, Ryan.” She apologized hastily. I snorted in response, dropped my head to a curt nod before turning away from her, feeling somewhat restless.
“It’s fine. You don’t have to apologize. Just stay away from trouble… and him,” I added bitterly before wheeling my chair towards the door.
“I’ll stay in the guest room tonight. I have work left to do, and I’ll sleep there too. Get some rest,” I asserted before wheeling out the door. I’d caught the sight of her mulling and sulking before I slammed the door shut.
I was being overly and I knew it. Even I couldn’t understand my sudden possessiveness, but I’d blame it on the Alpha gene.
Alphas don’t share. Alphas are twice as possessive. And Alphas clearly don’t like the scent of a fellow Alpha… or any wolf of sort lingering around the woman who bears their mark. And I?
I intended to be no different from any other
Alpha. Contractual or not, Scarlett was mine. No one else’s.
Scarlett’s POV
A sudden sadness tugged at my heart seeing that Alpha Ryan had indeed slept in the guest room. I’d expected him to creep back into bed, maybe have changed his mind. I wasn’t certain if I was more worried about him getting angry about the mention of Bryan and calling our arrangement to an end…
Or if it was merely because I’d gotten attached to him in some sort of way that confused even me. Clearing my throat, I sat up in bed to see the ointment he’d used on me last night was by the desk, some drugs and water too.
