A plus buzz settled into my phone, earning a groan from me as I reached over for it. My frustration was quickly replaced by anger when I glanced at the number. It wasn’t saved into my phone but I no doubt knew the number-it was my father.
“Hello?” I asked into the phone, keeping my voice curt and calm, although having every edge of bitterness to it.
“That’s no way to greet your father, Scarlett,” he complained, just like I’d expected him to.
“I’m busy at the moment. Is there anything you’ll need to say? Could you please make it quick?” I asked again, going restless by the minute.
“Your mother hadn’t raised you well. It’s obvious you’ve gotten the rotten manners from her. She could never do anything right nor raise a child.”
I cut back on every snarky response bubbling beneath my throat, sucking in air to gain a calm composure. I waited for him to speak, refusing to take his bait.
If he called, it meant he wanted something. After all, he’d never been interested in my life ever since I was young, and neither had he cared about my mother when her health began to fail. Neither had he checked up on us in years… and when he’d heard we were leaving the Blue Stone pack to reside in the New Stone pack, he hadn’t broken a single sweat, like we didn’t even matter to him.
“You should be home today. Your sister is getting marked, and it’s only right you meet her mate.”
A loud snicker eased off my lips faster than I could control… now they wanted what was right? Now they cared? Had anybody bothered to move a muscle when I’d been marked? Not that I gave them the audience either way.
“I can’t make it, I’m busy with work,” I responded curtly.
“No… today’s the weekend, and you should be home by noon. That’s all,” he ordered sternly before ending the call abruptly without waiting for a response from me.
A loud scream railed its way up my throat as I tossed the phone into the bed angrily. How many years had passed and he still treated me like I was nothing? Like I was the lowly omega daughter he was ashamed of. And maybe this once, I wanted to show him… prove to him that I was doing well.
Fine, it was just a meal. What was the worst that could happen? I was okay. I was marked as well… and I had no reason to hide anymore.
Taking a shower and rifling into proper clothing, I walked down the stairs but instantly turned to see Alpha Ryan at the table. My dish had been served. He looked casually dressed, setting the soups gently on the dining table… grey sweatpants and a matching white tee. He looked… breathtakingly attractive.
For a moment I gawked shamelessly, taking in the sight of his arms… his waistline… and the absolutely stifling way the clothes clung hard to his abs and muscles with each movement he made.
“Ogling, again,” Alpha Ryan called out, glancing sideways at me with a smirk. Shamefully, I walked toward the chair and he wheeled himself forward before lifting himself into the seat next to me.
“These aren’t spicy food… there’s too much color. Did Mrs. Thompson make mistakes with your dish?” I questioned, knowing he was more of a full-dish, pork, beef kind of person and not heavy on veggies.
“No. The healer asked you ate more of greens… so just eat, Scarlett. No complaints.”
Something in his words had wormed its way up to my heart as heat rushed my cheeks… he did this? For me?… This was all planned… for me? Swallowing thickly, I whispered a faint thanks before digging through my food.
“Yes… I have to leave for my family home back in the Blue Stone pack today… I have a bit to take care of,” I announced in between meals. A frown formed immediately on Alpha Ryan’s face as he tilted his head, waiting for an explanation.
“It’s my sister… she’s being mated. I have to be there,” I explained hastily, not waiting to catch a breath. Visibly, Alpha Ryan had relaxed and he didn’t seem all mad at me like he did the previous night.
“I should meet your family. It would be rude to have marked their daughter without knowing a thing about them,” Alpha Ryan offered again, and this time, I gazed directly into his eyes… the same odd feeling that warmed up to my heart… the same tingling sensation within me… the same way that had my skin burning and my belly tying in knots each time I was close to him had resurfaced.
“There’s nothing interesting about my family… my dad and mum… are, well… he rejected her after a while. He got himself a new mate…”
“Doesn’t matter, Scarlett. You should meet mine too. My parents are dead, but I do have a brother and a grandfather. I’ll tell you when you’ll be free, for you to meet them,” he offered easily before paying attention back to his dish while my heart thumped in my chest.
He wanted me to meet his family… his people… he would flaunt me as a mate even when what we shared wasn’t real… and now I was beginning to wish for more… to wish we could indeed share a real bond… wish that he could be my true mate.
Scarlett’s POV
Pushing past the door, I braced myself for whatever cruelty they’ll dish down to me. Of course, this wasn’t going to be a joyful ever-after happy. It wasn’t going to be a lovely nice reunion. It never would be.
“Scarlett!” Amaya’s voice boomed through the door as she dashed through towards me before wrapping her arms around mine, batting her eyelashes at me in a caring manner that had me reeking. Certainly, this faux act was meant to fool her mate… not me.
“Hi… Amaya?” I responded, uncertain of how I was expected to react to her false hospitality. Anger bubbled in me as I shoved her arms off mine gently, clearing my throat and adjusting down my dress. I’d taken proper time to choose out a classy outfit that didn’t scream wealth but spoke of class. I’d pondered on my choice of words all through the drive in the cab down here.
“Come, meet my mate… he’s a Hamilton.” The words had struck me as I stopped to a halt, my throat ran dry as blood drained from my face…
“A Hamilton?” I croaked out, hitting the sudden news dealt to me. Amaya nodded, flashing her bright set of teeth, floating inwardly with an air of pride.
“Yes… I mean, it’s nothing too big but, we found love in ourselves and we found out we were compatible. So, he’ll mark me and we’ll complete the mating bond soon.” Amaya responded, clearly flaunting again.
Alpha Ryan was a Hamilton too… and, perhaps… was he related to this new mate of my sister’s?
“He’s in here. Just don’t bring it up,” Amaya asserted sharply before tugging me by her arm toward the main waiting room. My heart shattered in my chest as I’d caught sight of the man seated elegantly in the sofa, his feet crossed, his arms relaxed, his eyes boring directly into me like he’d known. Waited. Planned the entire thing.
“Bryan?” I asked, my voice shattering into bits as I spoke.
“You know him?” Amaya asked almost immediately, although her words lacked any sort of confusion or surprise…
“Yes… your sister and I crossed paths a few times in the pack,” Bryan asserted calmly, standing to approach me. I’d braced myself, smacking off whatever had marred my features before, standing again.
“It’s been a while… Bryan,” I spoke icily, glaring daggers at him as we shook hands gently.
“I’ll get the table set… I’ll be back soon,” Amaya slurred before winking seductively at Bryan who grinned in response. I yanked my palms away from his clutch as soon as we were left standing alone.
“Are you insane? My step-sister? You are mated to… Amaya? Of all people?” I blurted out bitterly, venom dripping in my words while Bryan just stood with that same maddening, furiously annoying smirk that I’d come so accustomed to.
“Are you jealous? Tell me… after all! You are mated too… even marked and all. Don’t tell me you regret it now… do you?” he asked as though hinting at something. This was a game to Bryan. Everything was.
“Don’t be ashamed to admit it, after all you’ve got a thing for going after wealthy people… do you want me back now you know who I truly am? That I belong to the pure bloodline of wolves? That I’m a descendant of the true heirs of the Hamiltons? The Alpha bloodline?” he asked.
Each word he spoke sent a jab of pain at my heart, but I refused to show a sign of weakness. Not before him. He’d gotten enough control of my emotions in the past. Not anymore. He wasn’t the wolf I fell for. He was no different from a monster now.
“How about this-if you get rid of that old omega who’s marked you, I’ll make you my mistress. After all, it’s nothing unheard of about Alphas having more than one mate… is it?” he asked, leaning closer to me, his fingers trailing over my jaw as anger bubbled in me.
Just as I parted my lips to speak, to curse him out, Amaya’s footsteps drew closer to us.
“I need your help, Scarlett!” Amaya called from the doorstep. I shrugged before turning abruptly from Bryan, knowing I couldn’t trust myself not to do something I wouldn’t regret.
Amaya and I walked toward the dining hall in silence as we helped set the finished rounds.
“I know about you and Bryan. I knew he had been foolish enough to believe you. I know you left him… I know you’d sold yourself to an old Alpha… I know you gave your body to an Alpha two years ago, breaking every trust Bryan had in you. I know everything. So how about you drop the act?” Amaya asked in her usual cold and condemning voice, being the cold and evil wolf I’d known her to be.
“He… he told you?!” I stammered, the betrayal gutting deeper into me. He told her… he didn’t trust me when I’d explained. He didn’t wait to hear the truth and he’d just told Amaya… everything?
