Mia enjoyed the fact that her lover was a rule breaker and every exotic fantasy rolled into one man. Jake wasn’t exotic, Ryan decided as he found a spoon and walked to the kitchen table. He simply knew how to play Mia.

Ryan knew what Jake was like. He had learned about Mia’s on-and-off lover over the year, and one thing he knew was that the guy wasn’t impetuous. Jake was watchful, and he hung back before he entered a situation. The guy didn’t talk much about himself, but when he had something to say, everyone knew his was the voice of experience.

He sat down at the table and shook some cereal into the bowl, giving Jake another look. Jake had probably swapped women before. Ryan bet it wasn’t a novelty, and if that was the case, what would make him agree to do it again? He wouldn’t decline the offer, but he would have an end game of his own.

Ryan needed to know what everyone was planning to get out of this scenario. He couldn’t bring it up with Olivia or Mia. Jake was the best person to approach.

Ryan decided now was as good a time as any to ask, “Is Mia still planning to swap sex partners?”

Jake choked on his coffee. “You know about that, huh?” he spluttered.

Ryan shrugged his shoulders and poured the milk. He tried to mask his annoyance. Why had they informed Jake and not him? “Olivia’s not going to go for it.”

One corner of Jake’s mouth tilted in a smile. “Wanna bet?”

“Yeah.” He spooned some cereal in his mouth and chomped down hard. He didn’t taste a thing, too busy wondering why Olivia was hiding this information from him.

Jake paused for a moment and then shook his head. “Aw, this is too easy.”

Ryan glanced up. “What are you talking about?”

Jake slowly set his coffee mug onto the table. “Olivia agreed to it this morning.”

Ryan’s spoon slipped from his hand and fell into the bowl. Milk splashed over the rim and moistened him on his hand. “She did?” Ryan asked very quietly as he reached for the spoon and held it tight.

Why had she changed her mind? It was because of last night. Ryan was sure of it. He had been too dominant. Damn. Ryan gripped the spoon harder and felt the metal give.

“Mia and Olivia think the only obstacle is convincing you.” The tone in Jake’s voice alerted him. Damn, the guy really did see too much. Ryan kept his eyes on the bowl of cereal so Jake couldn’t see his expression. “Is that right?”

“I told them they might be overestimating the problem.” Jake paused to take another sip of coffee. “What man wouldn’t want the free pass to have sex with his lover’s best friend?”

Was that what Jake thought? Ryan would let Jake continue to operate under that mistaken belief. “You already agreed to it?”

Jake nodded. “Mia thinks I’ll be doing her a favor.”

That just showed how smart Jake was. Ryan wanted this guy as his ally. “Why do you want to do it?”

Jake appeared surprised by the question. “Despite what you think, it’s not to get into Olivia’s bed.”

Ryan knew he should feel a spurt of jealousy, but all he could think of was Jake and Olivia in bed together. Her slender body would arch underneath Jake’s. She would grab his ass, her fingers digging into his tight muscles. Jake would thrust into her, the sound of wet flesh and low growls echoing in the room. Ryan clenched his hand, bending the forgotten spoon.

“Settle down.” Jake stared at the bent utensil in Ryan’s fist. “I’m not interested in Olivia. I want Mia.”

Ryan tossed the spoon onto the table. “You have her.”

“For another couple of days,” he said with a hint of bitterness. “Then she’s heading off to who knows where, and I don’t plan to be left behind.”

“Oh, I get it. You think if you instantly agree to swap partners, you gain brownie points. She’ll know that you aren’t holding her back or judging her.” Ryan cast Jake a look of admiration. “That might work.”

Jake nodded. “So the sooner we do this, the better.”

“Don’t hold your breath.” Ryan pushed away the cereal bowl.

“Olivia might say she’s ready, but it’s going to take her a while to get used to the idea.”

“If Mia wants to do it before she leaves, it’ll happen.”

Ryan couldn’t argue with that. “What’s Mia’s strategy?”

“She wants Olivia to explore her sexual boundaries.”

Ryan rubbed his hand over his chin. “So anything goes?”

“Yep.”

Ryan caught Jake’s sly smile and he went into full alert. “You have something else in mind, don’t you? It’s not just to get on Mia’s good side.”

Jake held his hands up. “I’m all for swapping partners. The swap may not work out exactly as Mia hopes. . . .”

Ryan’s eyes narrowed. If he didn’t get Olivia or Mia, then that left . . . “Whoa!” He pushed his chair back as the fight-or-flight instinct pounded through his veins. “You and me?”

Jake laughed. “Don’t flatter yourself.”

“Good,” Ryan said with relief. But Jake’s explanation niggled at his mind. Mia had a plan, and Ryan wanted to be prepared. “Did Mia say how she wanted it to play out?”

“She didn’t tell me anything.” Jake took another sip of coffee. “So how about it? Are you going to swap?”

Ryan knew now was the time to feign reluctance. It was the only way to get what he wanted without too many questions. “It’s not that I don’t trust you. . . .”

Jake gave a snort. “Yeah, right.”

“But if Olivia agrees to this, I’m not going to interfere.”

Jake couldn’t hide his surprise. “Really?”
