Zoe Stevens was a far cry from the person she was five years ago. She was wearing designer clothes, probably from the days when the Stevens family was still rich.
However, the clothes were old and old-fashioned even though they were designer.
Zoe Stevens’s hair was not as well-groomed as it used to be. It seemed a little frizzy, and she had just tied it loosely with a scrunchie.
The Stevens siblings stopped pulling when they saw the car approaching.
Grace stepped out of the car and looked at the two in front of her. “What are you doing here?”
Zoe Stevens immediately rushed over and told Grace, “Grace, my brother saved your life yet you only paid for his medical bills without even thanking him. Is this how you treat your savior?”
Sean used his uninjured hand and quickly pulled Zoe Stevens back, saying, “I was the one who told her I don’t need anything else. Enough, Zoe. Let’s go home!”
“Brother, the family needs money. You injured your hand and can’t work for more than a month. Don’t we need money for Mom’s regular visits to the doctor? I won’t be able to pay the rent next month with the money I make!” babbled Zoe Stevens.
Embarra**ment flashed through Sean’s face.
Grace said, “So you came for money?”
“So what if we did? Do you think your life is worth nothing?” Zoe Stevens raised her chin and looked at Grace with jealousy flashing through her eyes. The person she once despised was now the mistress of the Reed family. She lived in a luxurious mansion while she had become an ugly duckling, living just like Grace when she was released from prison!
She used to mock Grace for being a sanitation service worker.
Now, she was just a dishwasher in a restaurant. Due to her crippled leg, she could not even be a waitress!
“Okay, I can give you money,” said Grace. It would be nice to use money to settle this. At least, she and Sean could settle everything between them. “How much do you want?”
“We want-” Zoe Stevens was about to demand an exorbitant price when Sean snapped. “Zoe, that’s enough. I won’t ask for money. I’ll find a way to pay for Mom’s medical expenses and rent!”
Then, Sean looked straight at Grace and said, “Grace, I know I made a lot of mistakes. I was the one who pursued you and promised to protect you for the rest of my life. But I let you g to prison for the sake of the Stevens family and even watche Lily do what she did to you. Maybe me saving you this time is a way for me to pay you what I owe.”
There was a flicker of pain in Sean’s eyes as he spoke.
He realized that Lily was the real perpetrator when the truth was finally revealed to him.
He was also half the reason why Grace was turned into a scapegoat. It was because Lily liked him, but he loved Grace at the time. Therefore, Lily targeted Grace to kill two birds with one stone.
“So you don’t need to give me any money. Let’s just end everything here!” With that said, Sean left as he did not want to make a fool of himself any longer.
Zoe Stevens stomped her feet as she watched Sean leave. Then, she looked at Grace with hatred. “Grace, it’s your fault that the Stevens family has turned out this way. Shouldn’t you compensate us?”
Grace said indifferently, “I’ve never owed the Stevens family anything. Why should I compensate you? Zoe Stevens, you don’t have to shout in front of me. Sean saved me, and I woul give him money if he asked me for it. But I won’t give you a single cent, so you can forget about it.”
After speaking, Grace walked into the Reed family’s mansion Zoe Stevens glared at Grace’s back with hatred before finally leaving with a heart full of reluctance.
Back at the residence, Grace hesitated a little before ordering the bodyguard beside her, “Look into what illness Sean’s mother is afflicted with and her medical bills.”
“Yes,” they answered.
It did not take long for Grace to find out about the situation with Sean’s mother.
She was suffering from kidney disease. Although she did not have to do uremia dialysis yet, it was pretty serious. She was undergoing conservative treatment before this, which cost over 2,000 dollars a month. She was hospitalized a while ago, and they needed about 100,000 dollars for the treatment plan the hospital gave.
However, 100,000 dollars was money the Stevens family could no longer afford.
Mrs. Stevens now owed the hospital 20,000 dollars.
Looking at the investigation report in her hand, Grace found it a little ridiculous. 100,000 dollars. Any bag Mrs. Stevens owned would have cost more than 100,000 dollars.
The next day, Grace went to the hospital Mrs. Stevens was ir She looked at Mrs. Stevens, who looked sallow and weak as she lay in the hospital bed.
Mrs. Stevens, the once proud woman who always liked to wear expensive jewelry, thought she was superior to others, and despised Grace’s ordinary family background, was now frail old woman lying in a hospital bed.
Grace remembered trying so hard to please Mrs. Stevens when she was dating Sean, but what she got in return was… “What the hell is this? Aren’t you disgracing me by letting me use this? I never use cheap stuff! I have no idea why Sean likes you!”
However, Mrs. Stevens was no longer a rich lady and had become an ordinary person! She was even at the bottom rung of this society, struggling to make a living.
The shared ward was noisy and had four beds. There were family members of the other patients here, but Mrs. Stevens’s area was deserted.
Grace went to Mrs. Stevens’s bedside and looked down at her Mrs. Stevens, who had her eyes closed at first, seemed to sense something and slowly opened her hazy eyes. They widened when she saw Grace.
“You…”
“Long time no see. I heard you’re sick,” Grace spoke indifferently.
“Yeah, long time… no see.” With some difficulty, Mrs. Stevens sat up and sized up Grace. She smiled bitterly. “Karma… It’s all karma. If the Stevens family hadn’t treated you this way, we wouldn’t have ended up like this Still looking indifferent, Grace said, “Sean saved my life a few days ago. I can pay for your medical expenses.”
Mrs. Stevens froze. Seeing that Grace was about to leave, she immediately said, “No, Miss Cummins… No, Mrs. Reed, I… I don’t want you to pay for my medical expenses!”
Grace froze. “You don’t?”
Mrs. Stevens said imploringly, “All… All I ask is that you let the Stevens family go. It doesn’t matter how long an old woman like me can live, but… Sean and Zoe are still young. Look at what the Stevens family has become. Please let them go. The… the Stevens family did you wrong, and we got what we deserved. You and Sean… used to love each other, after all. And you said Sean… saved you, so please have mercy and let them off.”
There was a touch of fear in Mrs. Stevens’s expression when she said these words.
Grace looked at Mrs. Stevens who was begging her. Finally, she left the ward without saying anything.
After leaving the ward, Grace went to the counter to pay for Mrs. Stevens’s bills. She did not have any sympathy for Mrs. Stevens but did not want to owe Sean anything. She would just consider it payment for saving her.
Grace walked forward, and her bodyguard dutifully followed her.
Grace had not even reached the hospital’s entrance when a voice from behind shouted, “Grace, Grace!”
Frowning slightly, Grace turned to look behind her and saw Sean running over.
However, before Sean could reach Grace, he was stopped by her bodyguard.
“Grace, I… I have something to say to you!” said Sean.
“Okay, go ahead,” said Grace. She gave her bodyguard a look and he lowered his hand that was blocking Sean.
“Did you just pay for my mother’s medical bills and transferred us 100,000 dollars?” asked Sean.
“Yes.” Grace admitted it.
“Why… Why did you do that? Shouldn’t you hate the Steven family and me?”
