“You’re saying that I should…” Enlightened, Flossie gave him a thumbs-up.” You still look like a kid, but you have good ideas when it comes to romance. Do you have a lot of experience in this area?”

“No, I don’t!” Jeffrey blushed, looking down at his feet. “I… I learned it from the TV, and… my own feelings. I couldn’t bear to see the woman I like thinking about another man, and I also don’t want to see her get sad over a man.’ He was inexperienced, and just explained his honest feelings.

“Your words make sense. It might not be decent, but I can give it a try. At least… I can force him to come out.” Flossie took a deep breath and gripped her phone, then stared at Jeffrey. “Kid, you said you would help me, right?”

“Of course. I’ll do anything to help you, even at the cost of my life. I’m fine with it!” Jeffrey sounded firm as if he was going to join a gang.

“No, you don’t have to risk your life but…’ After a brief pause, Flossie approached Jeffrey and grabbed his collar. “I’ll need your lips!”

Without any warning, Flossie kissed Jeffrey, then raised her phone and snapped a photo of them. Speechless, Jeffrey blushed a bright red.

After taking the photo, Flossie patted his cheek. “I’m sorry, dude. It was a rather impulsive decision. I didn’t scare you, right? I’ll buy some candies for you later.”

“What… are you guys doing?” A trembling voice came from the door.

Flossie turned around and saw a young woman with a round face staring at them in disbelief.

“Daisy, when did you come? Why didn’t you knock?” Jeffrey looked at the young woman in displeasure. This was such a special moment for him, and all he wanted was to be alone with Flossie. Having another person around ruined the atmosphere.

Daisy Lewis was gaping in shock, and she glared at Flossie viciously. “Who are you, you wicked woman? What are you doing at Jeffrey’s house? You… You even did such a perverted thing with Jeff! You’ll get pregnant. I’m going to tell Mrs. Joyner!”

“Pregnant?” Flossie was amused by Daisy’s words. “Don’t worry, Daisy, it was just a kiss. I won’t get pregnant.”

“Even so, you shouldn’t have kissed Jeff. If you kiss him, that makes you both a couple, but you’re so much older than him! It’s illegal!” Daisy complained, clenching her fists agitatedly.

“Cut the crap, Daisy. I’m eighteen, and I can do whatever I want. You have no right to judge Flossie or I.” Jeffrey defended Flossie. His face sank as he pointed at the door. “I don’t want you here right now. Please leave.”

Daisy didn’t expect the usually gentle Jeffrey to suddenly become so rude. Her eyes turned watery, and she whimpered, “Jeff, what are you saying? I’m Daisy, the girl you’ve always protected, but… you’re trying to drive me away for an old woman?”

“Shut up!” Jeffrey snapped at Daisy angrily, “Flossie is the person I admire the most, so don’t be rude to her. If you keep this up, I won’t be friends with you anymore.”

“How could you say that? I knew it… You must be bewitched by the sea witch! This old woman has to be the new sea witch, and she’s here to harm young men like you!” Daisy cried, pointing at Flossie.

Awkward, Flossie hurriedly tried to comfort Daisy, “Daisy, stop crying. You misunderstood. I only kissed him to be friendly. I can kiss you too, but that won’t make you my girlfriend, right? You and Jeffrey are my juniors, and there’s nothing between Jeffrey and I. You’re right-l’m an old woman, and if I had given birth any earlier, my son would be as old as Jeffrey. How could I possibly see Jeffrey that way? You’re overthinking.” Flossie found it ridiculous that she had to explain that there was nothing between her and a teenager, but it really was her fault. She had kissed Jeffrey to infuriate Halston and force him to appear, and ignored the fact that Jeffrey was officially an adult. He was probably affected by her reckless and insensitive actions.

“Really?”

Daisy squinted at Flossie and asked suspiciously, “You don’t like Jeff?” “No, I do!” Flossie admitted honestly.

Jeffrey’s eyes lit up, and he blushed even more.

Daisy stamped her feet. “Are you messing with me? You just said that you didn’t feel that way about Jeff!”

“There are many different ways of liking someone. Of course, I like an obedient young man like Jeffrey, but it’s more of a sisterly affection. It’s not how a woman would like a man,” Flossie explained with a smile.

Daisy calmed down, but Jeffrey looked crestfallen.

“Okay, I need to rest. Can you both go out and play somewhere?” Flossie massaged her temples, wanting them both to leave. In her opinion, they were just kids, and their idea of romance was quite funny. It would be ridiculous if she kept arguing with them on it.

“Okay, Flossie. Rest well, and call me if you need anything.” Although Jeffrey looked gloomy, he still put Flossie’s well-being above everything else, and dragged Daisy out of the room.

A long sigh escaped Flossie once they were gone. Many ridiculous things had happened lately, but her behaviour was probably the worst of it. At some point, Halston had made her go crazy. She turned on her phone and clicked on the photo she had snapped just now, and after thinking about it, decided to delete it. She would probably get a response from Halston if she sent him that photo, but it would make her seem pathetic and ridiculous. She had let this whole thing get to her head and had recklessly done something wrong. After Daisy had scolded her, she realized how stupid she was acting. She had to stop this. If Halston wanted to hide forever, she would let him.

Jeffrey dragged Daisy outside and huffed. “I told you so many times-stop coming to my house so often. You’re not a girl anymore, and I’m no longer a kid. The villagers will gossip if you keep coming to my room, and it’ll be bad for your reputation.”

Tears welled up in Daisy’s eyes. “What’s so bad about it? I was born to be your wife, and I’m going to be your wife. If I don’t come here, where should I go? And that old woman… Who is she? Why can she come to your house?”

Jeffrey said aloofly, “I told you not to be rude to her. If you call her an old woman again, I’ll stop talking to you.”

“Oh, please don’t!” Daisy tugged at Jeffrey’s arm desperately. “I’m sorry, I won’t say it again… But she’s pretty, so you have to be careful. I’m sure you’ve heard the rumors in the village.”

“As you said, it’s just a rumor. I’m sure the elders just said it to scare people. Only fools like you would believe it,” Jeffrey scoffed. He had heard of that rumor, but didn’t believe it.

For the past ten years, the villagers had told stories of a sea witch that lived in the depths of the sea and survived by sucking the blood of men. Many fishermen had apparently been harmed by the sea witch. Usually, the men would end up dead, but sometimes, the sea witch would bewitch the whole family and make them kill each other. The sea witch would go to different places along the shore every year, and this year, her place was supposedly Joyner Village.

“My mom said the sea witch looks pretty, and they’ll always pick the strongest and most handsome man in the village to be their victim. Jeff, in our village, that’s you! If she comes to our village, she’ll start with you.” Daisy clenched her fists and stared at Flossie’s room on the second floor, full of hostility. “I think she’s the reincarnation of the sea witch. She’ll kill you one day, believe me!”

“Are you out of your mind?” Jeffrey generally had a good temper, but Daisy’s accusations were pissing him off. “She befriended my family many years ago, and we’re all very close. She hadn’t come back for many years, and I’m happy that she’s here now. You don’t have to like her, but just don’t spread rumours about her.”

“I know that she came to our village a long time ago. I always played with her when I was young, and I liked her too… but it’s hard to rule out the possibility that the sea witch didn’t possess her.” Daisy lowered her voice and said, “Don’t you think she looks different now? She has dark circles under her eyes, and her eyes are blue now. It doesn’t seem normal. If she’s been possessed by the sea witch, she isn’t herself right now. The one you’re protecting isn’t the perfect woman you remember but a demon who’s here to kill you!”

“How is that possible…” Although it sounded insane to Jeffrey, he did realize that Flossie was different from what he remembered. In his mind, Flossie was confident, straightforward, outspoken, and positive like the morning light at the beach, wonderful and warm. But now, she was listless, downcast, and quiet. When she got angry, she behaved like a mad woman.

It did seem like an evil spirit had possessed her.

When Daisy noticed the change in Jeffrey’s expression, she knew that he agreed with her. “I’m right, aren’t I? You feel like she’s changed a lot, right? She went missing for so many years, but suddenly came back to your house and… kissed you. She must be trying to seduce you! It sounds like a sea witch’s tricks. Aren’t you worried that she’ll ruin your family?”

“Yes, I am.” Jeffrey’s expression became more serious. “I’m worried that she’ll harm us, and I’m also worried that the sea witch might harm her too.”

“Yeah, so you can’t take this lightly. You have to do something about it.”

“What should I do?”

“Drive her away. Don’t let her get close to your house again. No… Ask her not to get close to our village, then the problem will be solved.”

“No way!” Jeffrey shook his head vigorously. “She’s the person I respect the most. My house is her house. I won’t drive her away no matter what happens.”

Daisy looked desperate as she urged, ‘ But she’s… she’s the sea witch now. Do you want her to harm you if you don’t get rid of her?” “Why should I trust you? You’re just blabbering!

Huffing, Jeffrey went back to his house. “She’s just in love and angered by some jerk. She’ll come back around in a few days and everything will be back to normal again.” Then, ignoring everything that Daisy had said, he closed the door firmly.

After a while, Ava came back. “Jeffrey, where’s Flossie? Did you cook her nice food and spend some time with her?” Ava had been concerned about Flossie. After putting away the fishing net, she hurried home to welcome her family’s benefactor.

“I cooked her some food, and she’s resting now. Mom, don’t disturb her.” Jeffrey hurriedly stopped Ava just as she was about to go upstairs.

“Oh, she’s resting…” Ava heaved a sigh. “She must be upset over something since she went to the beach alone in the middle of the night. She even locked herself up in broad daylight, and doesn’t look energetic at all. How pitiful!”

Jeffrey’s doubts grew when he heard that. Flossie went out at night instead of the day, and looked frail and distant… It really did seem like an evil spirit had possessed her. Jeffrey wondered if Daisy was right.

“Mom, have you heard about the legend of the sea witch?” Jeffrey asked Ava.

“Of course!” Ava rolled up her sleeves and said, “It happened in the village next to our neighboring village many years ago. It was horrible… I heard that there was a couple who kindly adopted a boy, but that boy did terrible things to that couple’s daughter. At last, the boy went mad and killed his entire family, then left with that girl. Some people said that the girl had been bewitched by the sea witch to seduce her biological brother and the adopted boy, and the two boys then tried to harm each other… Oh, it really was a tragedy!” 1

Unexpectedly, Flossie happened to hear that as she was heading downstairs. To her surprise, it sounded like her brother’s story. A fisherman’s family had adopted her brother, but they had mistreated him. Besides, the son of that family was cruel, and tried to take advantage of his sister. Quinton had wanted to save Joanne, the fisherman’s daughter, but the story became more twisted as people talked about it.

“Mom, to be honest, I’m a little worried. Is Flossie affected by something bad? She looks so emotionless and frail these days,” Jeffrey said worriedly.

“That can’t be.” Although Ava didn’t believe it, she was still worried. She looked upstairs and happened to meet Flossie’s gaze, which terrified her.

“Flossie, you’re awake? Did you have a good rest?” Ava awkwardly waved at Flossie, feeling embarrassed. She hated gossiping about others behind their backs, but the one time she had done it, the person involved had heard her!

“Flossie!” Jeffrey turned around, his face pale and expression guilty.

“Flossie, don’t be mad. My son says stupid things sometimes, so don’t take it to heart.” Ava assumed that Flossie had heard everything, so she tried to defend Jeffrey.
