“It’s nothing. Keep going…” Owen sighed. “After all, you’ve hired me for this. I have time to waste.”

Flossie became impatient as Halston failed to find the right spot. “Can you do it? If not, let Dr. Wagner do it instead. Are you playing house here?”

“Yes, I can do it. I’ll find it soon!” Halston kept on searching sulkily.

“Stop, it’s there. Don’t move.” Finally, Owen heard Flossie’s heartbeat. After listening to it for a while, he declared, “I knew Mr. Guajardo could do it. It’s a big no-no if men can’t do it!”

Owen had been trying to lighten the mood, but his expression suddenly turned serious. “Wait!” He frowned deeply and ordered Halston, “Place it two to three centimeters down and to the left.”

His words made Halston nervous. He did as told, then asked hesitantly, “Is there something wrong?”

However, Owen didn’t reply as he listened to Flossie’s heartbeat. After a while, he put the stethoscope down, his expression grim. “I can’t say for sure… I’ll only be able to tell after getting the blood test results.”

Flossie had been quietly cooperating all along, but her eyes widened in realization when Owen spoke.

She quickly said to him, “I think we’d better stop here. I’m sure you’re tired, and I’m feeling tired too since they took so much of my blood. Let’s continue tomorrow!” She knew that there might be something wrong with her body, but she didn’t know how serious it was, so maybe it was best that not many people knew about it so they wouldn’t worry. Besides, if Tess managed to figure out who was trying to harm Flossie, she could secretly get rid of that person.

“I’m not tired. It’s just checking a report, so it’s no trouble at all.” Owen’s brows knitted in confusion. It hadn’t even been an hour since he arrived, and all he did was listen to Flossie’s heartbeat, so there was no way he was tired.

“You’re not tired, but I am. Do we have to finish the check-up today?” Flossie asked firmly, her tone suggesting that they wouldn’t have her cooperation after this.

“Have you been feeling tired a lot lately?” Owen asked doubtfully.

“I…” Flossie hesitated, not wanting Owen to notice anything strange about her.

However, Halston quickly butted in and said to Owen seriously, “Yeah, she gets tired easily nowadays.

She doesn’t like to move around and always wants to sleep. She even lies down in the morning sometimes. Something’s different, and I don’t know if it’s because there’s something wrong with her body.” He’d hired Owen because of his exceptional medical skills. Not only was Owen good at neuroscience, but he had a deep understanding of other medical fields, and Halston firmly believed that

Owen would be able to find out if there was any problem with Flossie.

“She doesn’t like to move and always wants to sleep?” Owen rubbed his chin thoughtfully, then sighed as he realized what might be happening. “How long has she been like this?”

“Around two weeks, and it’s been getting worse. I’m going to take her to a doctor to check if she’s ill even if she’s not pregnant.” Halston looked remorseful as he said, “It’s my fault. I’ve been so focused on

Guajardo Enterprise that I ignored her health, and that’s why it’s gotten worse. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if anything happens to her!”

“Calm down, buddy. You said it’s only been happening for around two weeks, so it’s probably related to her pregnancy. She’s not even one month into her pregnancy, and women usually aren’t very energetic during early pregnancy. They usually like to sleep; it’s normal.”

Seeing how crestfallen Halston looked, Owen had no choice but to comfort him. His preliminary judgment based on Flossie’s strange heartbeat and her fatigue was that there was something wrong with her health… but it wasn’t because of her pregnancy. However, he couldn’t make a groundless conclusion without referring to the blood test results, and he didn’t want to agitate Halston.

“I’m glad it’s normal.” Halston breathed a sigh of relief. “Did you hear that, dear? You’re fine. It’s just that you get tired easily because you’re pregnant. It’s my fault-l have no experience with this, so I thought something was wrong with your health!” Halston hugged Flossie happily and pointed at her belly. “Baby, you’d better be good. Don’t torture your mother. Your mommy is tired because of you, and if you tire her too much. I’ll beat you up once you’re born!”

Amused, Flossie smiled sweetly. “Oh, stop being so silly. You don’t act like a mighty president at all.”

“Alright, guys, that’s enough romance for one day.” Owen cleared his throat awkwardly.

Flossie told Halston, “I suddenly feel like eating a velvet cake. Could you get me one now if you’re free, or make me one?”

“Now?” Halston asked in bewilderment. Of course he could bake her a cake, but he wanted to read her blood test results. He could leave after that.

“Yes, now. I want to eat it now. What’s the matter… You don’t want to bake me a cake?”

“No, that’s not it. I just want to read your blood test report first,” Halston explained honestly.

“Why do you need to see the report? I’m fine, so I’m sure it’s going to be okay. But something will go wrong with me if you don’t buy me that cake.” Flossie complained. At last, she said petulantly, “Well, I don’t want this baby if you won’t bake me a cake. I cant even eat cake with a baby in my belly, so what’s the point of having it?”

“Okay, dear, I’ll buy you the cake now. Please don’t say that- the baby will get mad. I’ll go now, okay?”

Halston said helplessly. After a brief contemplation, he decided to buy her favorite velvet cake. It wouldn’t take long, and the blood test results might be out once he reached home. He quickly headed to New South Street to buy Flossie’s favorite velvet cake.

After Halston left, Flossie’s expression became solemn. She turned towards Owen and said quietly, “Dr.

Wagner, I know that my health is bad. Can you do me a favor?”

“What’s the matter?” Owen asked Flossie curiously.

“I hope you won’t tell Halston if there’s any bad news,” Flossie said simply. She had made Halston leave because she didn’t want him to worry about her, and she needed Owen’s cooperation to make that happen.

“Ah, I guessed as much.” Owen was not surprised by Flossie’s request. On the contrary, he felt sorry for her. Flossie was the ill one, but she only cared about Halston and didn’t want him to be sad. It was a textbook example of true love.

“Don’t worry, I’m not some insensible blabbermouth. I know what I should or shouldn’t say,” Owen said reassuringly, then added lightly, “Well, don’t worry too much about it. I might not work miracles, but I’m still pretty good at what I do.

You’ll be fine as long as you stick with me. Also, nothing is really certain, and it could just be that you’re tired because of the pregnancy.”

“I hope so.” Flossie smiled wearily and said nothing more. She felt that the blood test results would be bad. After all, the perpetrator had wanted to harm her, so they wouldn’t show her any mercy. If Leia hadn’t found out when she did, Flossie might be beyond cure now.

Owen received the blood test report in a while, and he clenched his fists as he read it. He couldn’t speak for a long time.

It was terrible news!

“What’s wrong, Dr. Wagner?” Flossie had been feeling lightheaded, and had nearly dozed off. She steadied herself to speak to Owen, who had been silent.

“I… I don’t know howto put it.” Owen looked at Flossie, frowning. He was usually quite straightforward, but even he found it hard to tell her the truth.

“Just tell me; I’m not as weak as you think. I can take it,” Flossie smiled and said calmly. She knew she was doomed when she caught Tess poisoning her, but she just found it hard to part with everything she had now. At this point, she just wanted the truth. “Tell me honestly… How long do I have to live?” Flossie whispered. She had to mentally prepare herself for it, and once she accepted it, she had to start making funeral arrangements.

“It’s not that serious, but how do I say this…”

Owen sighed deeply. He wanted to tell Flossie that it was better for her to die early given her condition.

Based on the blood test results and Flossie’s current fatigue, there was a high possibility that Flossie was suffering from heavy metal poisoning. If that was the case, Flossie would eventually have organ failure and nerve damage, and die a slow and painful death. In the initial stage, people would feel tired and sleep all the time, then the nerve damage and organ failure would start to cause them excruciating pain.

Her life would become a living hell.

Owen tried to think of the best way to phrase the cruel truth, and finally said, “You don’t have to worry—

I’ll cure you.” Although he said that, it was extremely difficult to cure heavy metal poisoning. He would also need to know the compound and its dosage so he could come up with a specific treatment plan.

“I want you to tell me the truth. What have your meals been like lately? Did you eat anything you shouldn’t have?” Owen asked Flossie seriously.

“I’ve been poisoned, right?” Flossie asked bluntly. “Can you tell what kind of poison it is?”

“I can’t, but my first guess is heavy metal poisoning.” Owen was a bit perplexed that Flossie was aware she was being poisoned, and eventually decided to tell her everything. The treatment would be more effective if he could talk to her openly. Even if he found it hard, he had to tell her the truth.

“Heavy metal poisoning…” Those words made Flossie’s heart skip a beat, and despair filled her. She remembered reading a report where a top student from a good university died because her jealous roommate injected a heavy metal into her toothpaste, poisoning her over time. She became paralyzed, and also suffered from brain atrophy and neuralgia. At last, she died of organ failure, and the symptoms had gone on for twenty years.

It meant that she needed twenty years to cure the poison, and she would be tortured the whole time.

“Haha! Dr. Wagner, I think euthanasia’s the best option. I’m a coward, and I can’t take pain or see myself getting ugly. I heard that people suffering from that kind of poisoning will become ugly in the end, and it’s also very painful. I think I should die while I still look good…” Flossie said jokingly, then shook her head sadly. “No, I’m not pretty now. I’ve lost my eyes. I should have died long ago so I wouldn’t suffer so much!” Overwhelmed by grief, Flossie wished that her life had been simpler. Her family of four had just been reunited, and she finally had the happy and harmonious life she had dreamed of, but it wouldn’t last. Was happiness just a giant sugar-coated pill, and she’d have to suffer its bitterness after enjoying its sweetness? If that was the case, she would rather not have enjoyed the sweetness in the beginning.

“Ms. Ellsworth, calm down. I told you that I’ll help you. This issue can be solved. Plus, the medical field is very advanced now, and we found out about your condition early.

The dosage isn’t deadly at this point, and as long as I can identify the poison, I can find a way to cure you,” Owen reassured Flossie patiently. He knew that he could not tell her the truth, or she would get scared.
