“Get better? How?” Flossie’s eyes were watery as she said desperately, “It might turn into a death notice if I wait any longer.”

“But…” Tears rolled down Leia’s cheeks. She didn’t know how to comfort Flossie. She wouldn’t have come up with such a stupid idea if she knew that there would be such a risk.

Haze frowned and strode forward to stop Flossie, then said firmly, “I contacted the best surgeon I know, and he’ll be here soon. He treated my grandpa and did his surgery, so your brother will be in good hands.”

“I don’t trust any doctor but myself now… He was fine. Someone must have wanted to hurt him, and that was why he fell into a coma. The surgery has to stop!” Flossie had never heard Quinton say that he couldn’t take anesthesia, so she felt that something had gone wrong during the surgery. It could’ve been the medicine, the skills, the doctor, or the nurse. Quinton was always so strong and healthy, and had survived worse injuries. It was unbelievable that he was dying because of a mere face recovery surgery.

“I get how you feel, but we’re not doctors. We can’t act irrationally now. If you make a scene and delay the treatment, can you bear the consequences?” Haze patiently tried to persuade Flossie. He had known her for such a long time, but it was the first time he had seen her so scared and distressed. He yearned to hug her, but didn’t dare to.

They were more than friends, but not a couple… There was nothing he could do.

“I know, but you’ve got to trust me. There must be something wrong with the people in the surgery room. I can’t let them go on, or else my brother’s life will be in danger. I can’t let that happen!” Flossie was barely keeping it together as she leaned on Haze for support. She knew that Haze was being practical and all she had was just an assumption, but she didn’t dare to take any more risks.

“Haze, I’m begging you. Make them stop the surgery…” Flossie sobbed as she looked at Haze pleadingly. For the first time, she was being vulnerable in front of him. ’Didn’t you get a good surgeon? I trust you… I’ll only let the doctor you get save my brother!”

Haze felt his heart ache when Flossie cried and begged him, so he forwent all his principles.

“Fine, I’ll help you!’ After Haze helped Flossie sit down, he rushed to the operating room and kicked the door open. “Stop the surgery right now! I’ll kill anyone who moves!”

“Okay, we’ll stop!” The surgeon and his assistant immediately put down their scalpels and raised their hands while squatting on the floor. The surgery was over, and they just needed to stitch the wound, but Quinton had unexpectedly fallen into a coma when he had only undergone partial anesthesia.

A few minutes later, the doctor Haze had phoned earlier rushed into the room, gasping for breath. ‘Mr. Baldwin, what happened? I nearly had a heart attack trying to get here on time!”

Haze frowned then said briefly, “Mr. Cromwell, I’ll leave this in your hands. If you can save him, you’ll be the benefactor of my family, and you’ll be compensated well.”

“Don’t worry, I can save him.” Robert Cromwell quickly changed into a surgical gown and got to work.

Flossie was forced to wait again. She sobbed as she stared at the door of the surgery room. “Haze, is this doctor reliable? It’s my fault if anything happens to Quinton.”

Haze said reassuringly, “If Mr. Cromwell said it’ll be okay, then it’ll be fine. Don’t worry.”

Before long, Robert came out of the operating room with a solemn expression, and Flossie rushed over to him.

“Doctor Cromwell, how is my brother? Is he…” Flossie clenched her fists, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn’t even dare to ask.

“Er, I don’t know how to tell you…” Robert frowned and sighed repeatedly.

“Oh no… he’s gone!” Flossie wailed, nearly collapsing onto the floor. The doctor looked helpless, and that could only mean that Quinton must be…

“Mr. Cromwell, just tell us if he’s alive or not,” Haze snarled at Robert impatiently. ‘When did this man become so dramatic?’

“Yes, he’s alive. You can rest assured.” Robert patted his chest confidently. “I’ll have to stop being a doctor if I can’t save him in this kind of condition.”

“Why did you sigh then? It’s good news that he’s alive. You almost drove my friend mad!” Haze rolled his eyes in annoyance. He knew Flossie was distraught, and delaying wouldn’t help anything.

“He’s alive, but it’s the same as being dead…” Robert sighed again as he said sadly.

“What… What do you mean?” Flossie immediately became anxious again.

Robert hesitated for a long time, then finally said, “Yes, he’s out of danger, but his brain nerves are damaged because of the problem with the anesthesia. I can’t say how long he’ll be in a coma; it could take three days, five days, or even eight to ten years… You need to prepare yourselves for the worst.”

“Eight… to ten years?” Flossie’s mind went blank. Her legs gave way, and she fainted.

“Phoenix!” Haze steadied her again, then carried her in his arms.

“Flossie… Flossie, are you okay?” Leia cried out, gripping Flossie’s hand shakily. Overwhelmed with guilt, she sobbed, “It’s all my fault! Quinton was fine, and if I didn’t suggest this, things wouldn’t have turned out this way. If he doesn’t wake up again, I… I can only give up my life too.”

“Okay, stop blaming yourself. All surgeries have risks, and this was completely unexpected. You and Phoenix need to calm down.” Even as he comforted Leia, Haze looked down at Flossie in worry. ‘Don’t worry, Phoenix. I’ll never let anything happen to your brother.’

Haze used his connections to transfer Quinton to the best hospital in Beach City. He even requested that Robert join the best medical team in that hospital to hasten Quinton’s recovery.

Flossie woke up in a hospital bed, and she stared at the white ceiling above her. Had she been dreaming?

“Flossie, you’re awake. Thank God!” Leia had been by Flossie’s side the whole time, and her eyes were swollen from crying.” I thought something happened to you… You scared me!”

Flossie gently held Leia’s hand and smiled weakly. “I just needed a nap. I’m fine.”

Haze had just finished a discussion with the medical team, and was overjoyed to see that

Flossie was awake when he walked into the ward. “You’re finally awake. I’ll get you a medical team too if you need it.”

He strode over to the bed and adjusted the transparent tube of the IV drip. “The doctor said you were overly worried and your blood sugar was low, so you fainted. You need to take better care of yourself, or you might get anaemia.”

“I’m fine. I’m very healthy.” Flossie pulled out the needle in her arm and shoved the blanket aside to get out of bed. She had been learning martial arts with her grandfather since young, so she was fit. She just had been through too much in the past two years, and after giving birth to two children, her body was not as strong as before.

She had only fainted, but she was put on an IV drip. It was very humiliating to her.

“Where’s Quinton? How is he? He’s awake, right?” She had been worrying about Quinton even while she was out, so the first thing she wanted to do after she woke up was ensure her brother’s safety.

“Your brother is fine, he just needs a bit of time to wake up. The medical team is discussing the best ways to treat him, and I believe they’ll come up with a solution soon,” Haze said lightly. Quinton’s condition was actually much more serious than that, but he didn’t want to make Flossie worry.

“Really… Where is he? I want to see him.” Flossie knew that she had to face reality.

“He’s still in the ICU, and family isn’t allowed to visit him for now but… You can stand outside and watch. Maybe it’ll give you peace of mind.”

“Fine.” Flossie nodded.

“I’ll go with you after this infusion,” Haze said.

“It’s fine. I can go on my own.”

“No, you have to listen to me this time. If you don’t finish this infusion, I won’t tell you which ward he’s in,” Haze insisted.

“Haze, you…” Flossie was helpless, so she just lay in bed again and waited for the infusion to be over.

Leia was relieved to see that Flossie was fine. She gritted her teeth and seemed to have made a decision. “Flossie, you and Quinton should rest. Don’t worry too much. Quinton will be fine… I’ve got something to deal with, so I’ll go now.”

Flossie frowned, sensing that something was off. Leia was usually casual and optimistic, but now it seemed like something was weighing on her mind. “Lei, is there something troubling you? Don’t feel guilty because of what happened, I know you suggested the surgery with only the best intentions. Don’t stress yourself out.”

“No, that’s not it.” Leia shook her head. “It’s a personal matter. Take care of yourself, and wait ” She ran out of the ward before Flossie could ask any more questions.

Flossie sighed in worry as she watched Leia leave. “I know

Lei, she must be blaming herself. I’m worried that she might do something stupid.”

“Why don’t you stop worrying about others, and start worrying about yourself?” Haze touched her head lovingly. Most women were dependent, and could only rely on someone more powerful to survive, but Flossie was different. She was the one others relied on. She was stubborn and strong, but he hoped that she would one day give him the chance to protect her and take care of her.

After half an hour, the infusion was almost over. The second it ended, Flossie rushed out of the bed speedily.

“Wait for me!” Haze howled and ran after her.

The ICU wards were in a different block, and they had to walk for a while before reaching the floor Quinton was on.

Haze was right-even family members were not allowed to visit the ICU patients. They could only stand outside and look into the ward through the large glass panes.
