Chosen Amara was supposed to mate with the dragon of Air named Kane, but he fell when the Mother fell. The Goddess has given her a second mate here with my blessing. He goes by the name of Roky. Why do you ask young one?
I had a feeling that Amara wanted to mate with Roky, but she was holding out hope that her true mate was still around somewhere. I wanted to ask to see if I could try to help.
Well young one that is your choice. We are not permitted to tell someone their own mate, but no one has thought to ask about someone else. You are wise beyond your years.
She felt Earth leave her mind and opened her eyes to find that Emmy was directly in front of her face. She jumped back and yelped when she tripped and fell on her ass.
“Are you all right?” Amara came over and helped her up.
“Yes I am.” She pulled Amara to the side. “Emmy just scared me when I was finished talking to the element.”
“Why did you contact Earth? She cannot help you with your mate’s choice Araiya. They are not permitted to tell us who our mates are.” Amara looked over her shoulder, staring at Roky again.
“No, they can’t tell us who our mates are, but they can tell us about someone else’s mate. Amara I might be wrong, but I asked about you. I saw how Roky looked at you and how you looked at him. I asked Earth who your true mate was.” Amara raised her hand to cover her mouth. “Your true mate was a dragon of Air named Kane. He died in battle, I think. She said he fell when the Mother fell. I am truly sorry Amara. The Goddess did give you a second mate though, Earth had even given her blessing for the pairing. Roky is your second chance for a mate Amara, as blessed as the first would have been. If it is something you want, I don’t want you to let that chance go.”
Tears fell down the woman’s face. “I knew he was gone, but I always held on to hope you know. I have waited for so many years since my anointing. I have gone to Air every year, hoping. To know that I have wasted years when I could have been with a mate chosen for me by the Goddess and blessed by the elements is hard to swallow.”
“It wasn’t wasted Amara. You held on to your dedication to your mate, never wavering. That shows how strong and devoted you are. Now you get to show that to Roky, who gets to spend the rest of his long life loving you.” Araiya kissed Amara’s cheek and wiped her face.
“You are a very old soul young lass and thank you for thinking of me. You have freed me to do the one thing I wanted but could never do.” Amara walked away.
Araiya walked over to Talon and Shavon and was about to say something when a loud roar ripped through the ballroom. Everyone turned towards the sound to find Amara and Roky in an embrace.
“Finally!” everyone called out and started clapping. Araiya looked at Shavon and she laughed.
“Roky has waited a very long time for a mate. He was getting on everyone’s nerves. Plus, everyone knew how the two felt for each other, so we were just waiting until she broke down and said yes.” Shavon’s eyes welled up, and Talon gave her a hug. “She has waited years for her true mate but has been so sad and lonely.”
“Her true mate died a long time ago. She just needed to hear that.” Araiya patted Shavon’s back.
Talon and Shavon quirked their heads to the side and eyed Araiya. “I asked Earth.” She shrugged.
“The elementals aren’t allowed to tell us who our mates are.” Talon looked down to Shavon and back up at Araiya, confusion all over his face.
It was Araiya’s turn to laugh. “The elementals can’t tell a person who their own mate is. There isn’t any rule regarding asking about someone else’s mate.” Both of them looked stunned. “I see the thought never crossed your minds to ask about someone else’s mate. I think that’s best though. I only asked because I could see the pain on both their faces. I wanted to help, so I figured I could ask. The worst that could have happened would have been that I didn’t get an answer.” She shrugged. Shavon’s eyes widened and then Araiya was airborne. She screamed and realized she had arms around her, and people laughed.
She dropped back down to the ground and was spun around. She was enveloped in a bear hug. “Ummm, what the fuck is going on? Who in the darkness is this?” she yelled into a hard chest.
The man let go right away and stepped back with a sheepish grin. “Hi, um, I’m Roky. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Araiya started to grin. “Hi Roky, name’s Araiya. Now that I know who you are, I don’t have to ask.”
“I wanted to say thank you. You have made me the happiest dragon in the world.” Amara cleared her throat. “Well, she made me the happiest dragon in the world, but you helped. So, I don’t know how to thank you or honestly what you even did. Amara just told me you told her something she needed to hear, but she acknowledged me for the first time in forever. After a thousand years, I have my mate because of you.” Roky hugged Araiya again and then turned back to Amara.
“What the fuck did he mean a thousand years?” She turned to her friends.
“Oh well, we don’t age or like die. I stopped aging physically at like twenty-five. I think, but I am three hundred and fifty-two years old.” Talon scratched his head thinking. “Yeah, I think I am that old anyways. You lose count after a couple hundred years or so. Shavon here stopped aging the moment we became mates.”
“What the fuck? Is that why there are no Elders?”
“Yeah, I thought you knew. Even the unmated Chosen age slowly. The one you met at River’s is over a thousand I think.”
“Wait seriously? How old is River?”
“I honestly have no idea, old as fuck.” Araiya had to pick her jaw off the floor. Talon was almost four hundred years old and looked and acted so young. River didn’t look a day over his mid-twenties, but he was even older. Sweet baby Goddess, what did she get herself into? “Don’t look so shocked. I am still the same Talon. River is a dusty old fart, but he’s still the same Dragon. It’s okay if you have the hots for him. It’s just how we live.”
“You didn’t find it weird to love a woman who was twenty-one when you are over three hundred years older than her?”
“Nope, I love how new life is to her. Plus, I am not that old for a dragon. I am one of the last that hatched before everything went to hell.”
“Come on let’s go sit and eat. You have many familial-bonded dragons who would like to meet you, Araiya. The potential mates have already been told you won’t be accepting any today, but the others still want to meet you.” Shavon pulled them over to a table.
They spent the rest of the day and evening eating, laughing and drinking. They met more dragons than Araiya could even think about when they were finally brought to a room to sleep. She fell into the bed and was asleep before even taking off her boots.
The following day, they were up at the crack of dawn to head to Air. After dressing, Araiya met up with everyone else in the hall to make their way out. Amara waited at the head of the hallway with Roky. “All right everyone, we will make our way back out through the doorway and into Air. It will be the same thing as Earth. We head straight to the center of power and head to the banquet. Roky will be coming along from here on out to help out with everything.” A chorus of ‘aww’ echoed through the room. Amara blushed while Roky laughed. “All right everyone, let’s go.”
Araiya felt a soft brush within her mind and Earth’s voice rang through her.
