He reached the phone towards me reluctantly, although I could both hear him loud and clear.

“This… this is a call meant for you. And now, if I must say this as the Alpha, the eldest of the Hamilton bloodline of Alphas, I am sorry and I am ashamed to have treated you like that, Scarlett. You are one of us and you deserved better than me just icing you out and speaking down on you,” he spoke.

My breath caught in my chest at this gesture from him-it was surprising and unexpected.

“Is this some… fun? Joke?” Ryan asked, standing in place, hovering for me even before I’d spoken my own thoughts.

“I would never do a thing like that. I’m sorry it happened as it did. Now tell me, Scarlett, am I forgiven for my vile and harsh words? Will you forgive this old man?” he questioned again.

Everything about his words showed sincerity. I understood. Certainly, I would have done the same if I found out about a child I’d raised.

“I was never angry for nothing. I understood that you were worried about him and it was all a misunderstanding. I’m sorry as well-and you are forgiven,” I offered, smiling plainly even though I was certain he couldn’t see me over the phone.

Ryan arched his eyebrows, standing by my side as though to question my choices, but he hadn’t said anything either. He’d respected my choices and, I’d be a liar if I claimed I wasn’t falling in love with the Alpha standing before me all over again.

“Good, because I wanted to be certain about it before I did this,” he spoke into the phone.

The loud banging on the main door on the first floor echoed around us as the call ended.

My eyes darted around in search for the wheelchair, only to realize we’d left it down by the stairs. My heart hammered faster in my chest as realitydawned on us,.theyll find out.. The truth.

Scarlett’S POV

I saw it the second we stepped up from the hallway-that damn wheelchair still folded up at the base of the stairs. I felt my heart fall straight through my stomach, ice cold panic shot up my back.

How the hell could we have forgotten that?

“Fuck,” I breathed, realising the entire thing would be considered my fault if i didn’t get going now.

Ryan just stood there behind me, silent, unfazed, like he hadn’t just walked up three flights of stairs on legs that were supposed to be too broken to do that. like we hadn’t just walked past people who still thought he was paralyzed.

“I’m so sorry, Ryan. I left the wheelchair downstairs. Ryan, I’m not trying to blow everything up, it was in the heat of the moment,”I apologized. he didn’t flinch. He didn’t even look sorry. He’d never bother me and time after time he just kept proving that.

“They won’t care. maybe it’s time they found out anyways,”Ryan asserted with the same air of non-challenge that had a cold chill running down my spine.

“What do you mean they won’t care? Everyone’s been lied to for years. you think they’re just gonna clap when they realize you’ve been walking around in secret like it’s a fucking magic trick?” I cursed, my hesitation getting to me, fear too. my heart hammered in my chest as I spoke.

“I said they won’t care because it doesn’t matter anymore. They’re gonna find out either way-today, tomorrow, doesn’t matter.” I stared at him like he’d grown another head. My throat went dry. my pulse thudded in my ears.

“You’re serious?” I asked, wanting to be certain this wasn’t some sort of game. But wasn’t this going to toss out all he’d worked hard for over the years?

“Scarlett, you said you trusted me.”

“Not with this,” i spat viciously, but it didn’t matter. he was already turning away from me like the whole conversation wasn’t burning a hole in the floor between us. So i did what i always do.

I fixed it.

I turned around, stormed back down the stairs, heels clicking, heart racing, hands already sweaty as I grabbed the cold metal and yanked the chair up one step at a time. muscles screaming, breath catching with every pull, every scrape against the stair marble. It clanged like it was mocking me, like it knew we were seconds from being exposed.

My arms were shaking by the time I got it up to the top. I shoved it into the hall outside the sitting room just as the doors opened.

Ryan was already there, already composed, already standing in full view like it was all part of the plan, like he wanted them to see. With a smirk, he settled into the chair just in time for his grandfather to come into view.

“Ryan,” his grandfather called with a broad smile. He jutted his head in my direction as well with another smile.

“Sir,” Ryan said with a calm i couldn’t match. i stepped forward, stood beside ryan-not behind him, not beneath him-right there, equal. my chin high, my spine straight.

The old man looked at me for a long time, like he was trying to see past my skin into my blood.

“Good. Come with me, Scarlett,” he called, locking his elbows right around mine. my eyes found ryan, but he was already speaking to what i’d suppose was an omega from his father’s pack house.

I followed him down the corridor. Ryan stayed behind. I could feel his eyes on me as we moved.

The room we stepped into looked like something out of a royal house. racks of dresses lined the walls-boxes, shoes, bags-everything was new, untouched, pristine.

“What is this?” I asked, a strange wave of emotion crashing all into me.

“Your welcome into our family. You’re one of us now,” he greeted with an even wider smile, as though that would make everything more convincing.

I blinked, lips parting, chest tightening.

“This is all for me?”

“Of course. and there’s more.”

He moved past me, opened a heavy door at the far end.

“I had a room prepared for you,” he soothed. the same mischievous glint in Ryan’s eyes glimmered in his grandfather’s own as well-cunning as an alpha could be.

“Tell me something, girl-has his condition affected his performance?” he asked like it was the most casual thing. My stomach turned, my throat running dry.

“Excuse me?” I breathed out.

“Don’t play dumb. does the boy still fuck, or did that break too?” my face flushed, rage rising as my cheeks burned from embarrassment.

“That’s not your damn business. Ryan and I are mates, and I think it’s best to be between us,”I retorted, trying to keep my tone light and face calm.

“It is when you’re part of my legacy. We carry bloodlines here, not love stories. If he can’t have pups, he can’t lead.”

“He’s fine.” suddenly-then he pushed me in. not hard, but firm enough to stumble backwards. A startled gasp coursed through my lips as I realised I’d been locked inside. and outside.

“Ryan.”

He was already in the room, standing at the foot of a bed that looked like it belonged in some twisted fairy tale. roses, candles, music, petals on the sheets, soft dim lighting-the whole damn room reeked of ceremony. He didn’t look surprised. He looked resigned.

“They want us together, Scarlett,” he whispered, closing in on me. He pressed both of his palms around both sides of my head, caging me in between them, our faces merely inches apart as his warm breath fanned against my skin.
