Morning activity surrounded them now-wolves shifting back to human form after patrol, cooks unloading supplies, warriors stretching before training. Yet as Talon passed, conversations dipped, heads bowed.
By the time they reached the pack house, the sun had fully crested the horizon, bathing the stone structure in warm light. It should have felt peaceful.
It didn’t.
They entered without pause and headed straight for the Alpha’s office.
Enzo moved ahead, knocked once, and opened the door immediately-no hesitation, no wait.
Inside, Alpha Asher stood behind his desk, already dressed and clearly awake far longer than the rest of the pack. Luna Hazel sat nearby, impeccably composed despite the early hour. Beta Rafe stood near the window, arms crossed.
Asher’s eyes flashed the moment the door opened.
“Beta Enzo,” he said sharply, “have you forgotten that this is not your pack? You will wait for permission before entering my office.”
“Alpha Asher,” Enzo didn’t even blink. “The Alpha King and Luna Queen do not wait for permission to enter any room.”
Hazel’s brows lifted slightly
“Wherever the Alpha King stands,” Enzo continued, “is an extension of his kingdom. He chose to respect your laws and customs by not asserting that authority.””
His gaze hardened. “But his Luna was attacked inside your pack-without your knowledge. So forgive me if I show no respect to a pack that endangered my Luna Queen.”
“Whose Luna Queen?” Hazel scoffed softly. “The Alpha King is unmated.”
The room chilled.
Talon stepped fully inside, Diana beside him.
“Were you not present,” Talon asked calmly, “when I said Diana is my mate?”
Hazel laughed, brushing her hair back. “Please. As if you would choose a wolfless woman as your Luna, Talon.”
The bond flared.
“I did not choose her,” Talon said, his voice dropping into something lethal. “I am mated to her.”
Hazel’s smile faltered.
“And for the last time,” Talon continued, eyes glowing faintly, “if you address me by my name instead of my title again, do not be surprised if I retaliate by snapping your head from your body.”
Hazel paled.
“I do not care if you are the Luna of this pack,” Talon added. “Alpha Asher, I hope you know how to handle your Luna better.”
“Forgive her, Alpha King,” Asher’s jaw tightened, “I will speak with her. But please tell me how I can help you.”
“As my Beta already stated,” Talon remained standing, “I want to know how my mate was attacked inside your pack without your knowledge.”
Asher swallowed.
“Why were rogues able to enter your territory undetected?”
Rafe straightened.
“And why,” Talon finished coldly, “the rogue my Beta captured was executed inside your dungeon?”
The color drained from the room. Asher, Hazel, and Rafe exchanged stunned looks.
Impossible.
They hadn’t even finalized their explanation, how does he know?
Asher felt a cold knot twist in his stomach.
Who reported this to him?
“You will answer me,” Talon’s gaze swept over them-measured, knowing, unyielding. “Every question.”
Morning sunlight streamed through the windows, bright and unforgiving. And Asher understood, with chilling clarity, that daylight would not save him from the reckoning that had arrived with the Alpha King.
The air inside Alpha Asher’s office was heavy-thick with tension, authority, and the unmistakable pressure of two dominant Alphas sharing the same space.
Alpha Asher stood near the long bak desk, his bands clasped behind his back in a posture meant to project control. Beside him, Luna Hazel sat upright, chin lifted, her expression carefully composed. Beta Rafe stood slightly behind them, alert, eyes moving between the Alpha King and his own leaders, reading the room with the instinct of a seasoned second-in-command.
Across from them stood Talon.
The Alpha King.
His presence alone altered the very atmosphere. Power rolled off him in quiet waves-restrained, controlled, but unmistakably lethal if unleashed. At his side stood Beta Enzo, calm and observant, his gaze sharp as he took in every flicker of expression, every subtle shift of unease.
Asher cleared his throat, breaking the silence.
“Alpha King,” he began carefully, choosing his words as though each one were a blade that could cut in the wrong direction. “We are currently investigating what happened with the rogue infiltration. How they managed to enter our territory unnoticed is… concerning. We are also interrogating the guards I personally assigned to the dungeon. Once our internal investigation is complete, we will send you a full report.”
The moment the words internal investigation left Asher’s mouth, the temperature in the room seemed to drop.
“Internal investigation?” Talon’s eyes narrowed, and his voice was calm, but it carried an edge sharp enough to draw blood. “What exactly do you mean by internal investigation?”
Asher stiffened, but before he could answer, Talon continued, his gaze unwavering. “The attack was on my mate,” he said, his voice lowering, deepening. “On my Luna Queen. This is not a matter for closed doors and whispered reports. The investigation will be done openly-and it will be led by me. As Alpha King.”
The weight of his title slammed into the room.
Hazel inhaled sharply, then stood, smoothing the front of her dress as she stepped forward.
“Alpha Talon,” she said, her tone respectful but laced with insistence, “please forgive me for interrupting. But Diana is a member of our pack. By law, any crime committed within pack territory must be investigated by that pack’s leadership.”
“Have you not heard a word I said?” Talon’s lips curved-not in amusement, but in something far colder Diana is my mate. My Luna. She is no longer just a member of your pack. She is a member of the royal family.”
“She may be your fated mate,” Hazel’s jaw tightened, her voice steady, almost earnest, “but you have not marked her. The law is clear. Wolves remain officially unmated until the mark is given.”
For a heartbeat, the room was silent.
Then Talon laughed. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t cruel. But it was sharp, edged with unmistakable authority.
“For a regular wolf, perhaps, but let me educate you, Luna Hazel.” His eyes locked onto hers, pinning her in place. “For the royal family, especially the reigning Alpha King, the mark is a formality. Nothing more. The moment I accepted her as my Luna. The moment I mated her. Her status changed.”
His voice dropped, resonating with power. “She became the Luna Queen.”
Asher’s breath hitched.
Rafe’s eyes widened.
Hazel’s composure cracked, just for a moment.
“And the attack,” Talon continued, “happened after she became my Lurta.”
Shock rippled through the room like a physical force.
“You… you didn’t need to mark her?” Asher asked quietly, disbelief etched across his face.
“I assure you,” Enzo stepped forward then, his presence solid, his voice calm but firm. “All the Alpha King needed to do was accept her and mate her. I felt the shift in her status the night before the attack. Every member of the royal pack did. The bond was undeniable. This ensures the protection of the upcoming Luña Queen.”
His eyes flicked briefly to Hazel. “The Luna Queen’s presence was recognized.”
Silence followed.
“So I will ask again,” Talon turned his attention back to Asher, his expression hardening. “What happened to the rogues you captured? How did they end up dead in your dungeon? And what did the guards you personally chose have to say about it?”
Asher clenched his jaw. He could feel the Alpha King’s aura pressing down on him-heavy, suffocating, demanding truth.
“The guards…” he said slowly, through gritted teeth, “cannot remember what happened. They remember standing watch. And then-nothing. The next thing they knew, the rogues were dead.”
“So,” Talon’s gaze sharpened, “you have a traitor.”
The word echoed like a death sentence.
“Someone with enough authority to issue a command,” he continued, “and enough skill to compel obedience and erase memory.”
Enzo nodded. “Alpha King, we can command the guards to tell the truth. Your authority supersedes all others here.”
Talon shook his head once.
“We can,” he agreed. “But it won’t give us what we need.”
He turned slightly, pacing now, every movement controlled, predatory. “If the one who gave the order hid their face-wore a mask-the guards wouldn’t know who it was. To them, an order from a Beta carries the same command weight as one from an Alpha. They don’t feel the difference. They only feel the order.”
Hazel’s fingers curled into her palms.
In that case,” Enzo said thoughtfully, “why don’t we ask the rogues what happened?”
Talon stopped pacing A slow dangerous smile crossed his face as he looked directly at Asher, then Hazel, then Rafe.
“That,” he said, “is an excellent idea.”
Hazel’s stomach dropped.
What are they talking about? She thought wildly. The rogues are dead.
“How,” she asked sharply, unable to stop herself, “do you intend to question a dead rogue?”
Talon’s eyes gleamed. “Who said anything about questioning dead rogues?”
The silence that followed was suffocating.
“Not dead? What do you mean?” Asher said cautiously.
“My beta,” Talon replied without hesitation. “He has many talents. One of those talents is his intuition. Or foresight whichever you want to call it.”
Enzo crossed his arms. “What the Alpha King wanted to say is, we can question the rogue I hid in your dungeon. The one that is still alive.”
Hazel felt a chill crawl down her spine.
“Someone tried to assassinate my Luna Queen,” Talon stepped closer to the desk, leaning forward just enough to remind them all who held power here. “Someone used your guards, your dungeon, your territory.
His gaze hardened. “I will uncover who did this. And when I do… no rank, no title, no pack law will protect them.”
His aura flared then-just enough.
Hazel swallowed hard.
For the first time since Diana’s arrival, fear bloomed in her chest.
Because whoever had ordered those rogues executed?
Whoever had erased the guards’ memories?
They had not just committed treason against a pack.
They had declared war on the Alpha King.
And Talon never lost wars.
“Alpha King, the rogues and the royal guards are assembled in front of the pack house,” Beta Enzo reported, his voice calm but edged with purpose. They’re waiting for us.”
Asher’s head snapped up from his desk. His brows furrowed, imitation flashing across his face. “Tin front of the pack house?” he repeated sharply. Way are they there? They should be brought to my office Interrogations are handled privately, not turned into spectacle.”
Before Enzo could respond, a heavy, commanding presence filled the room.
“That will not do, Alpha Asher.” Talon stepped forward, his posture relaxed but his aura anything but.
The air thickened instantly, pressure bearing down on every wolf in the room. Even the walls seemed to hum in response to him.
“This investigation,” Talon continued evenly, his blue eyes cold and assessing, will be conducted in front of your pack. Out in the open. No shadows. No closed doors. No whispers behind titles.”
“You overstep,” Asher rose to his feet so abruptly his chair scraped loudly against the floor. “This is my pack. I am the Alpha here. King or not, you do not have the right to conduct an investigation like this on my territory.”
“I do,” Talon’s lips curved-not in amusement, but in something far more dangerous. “And I will”
Asher’s hands clenched into fists. “If you do this in front of my pack, you undermine my authority. My wolves will lose faith in my leadership. You will disrupt the structure I worked years to build!”
“You already disrupted it,” Talon replied coldly. The moment a traitor operated freely within your borders The moment rogues walked through your territory unnoticed. The moment my mate was attacked under your watch.”
Diana stood beside Talon, silent but steady. Though she said nothing, her presence alone was powerful- unflinching, watchful, resolute.
Talon turned fully toward Asher now. “As Alpha King, I have a duty to protect every wolf within this kingdom. And right now, your pack is compromised. You have a traitor. Possibly more than one”
Asher scoffed. “And you think I would allow that? You think I would betray my own pack?”
“I think,” Talon said, voice dropping to a lethal calm, “that you already tried to hide this from me You called it an internal investigation. You thought you could contain it. Control it. Decide what I would and would not see.”
Asher’s eyes burned. “You dare accuse me of treachery?”
“I dare say,” Talon replied, stepping closer, his aura pressing hard now, “that I do not trust you.”
The room went deathly quiet.
“What would I gain from sending rogues after Diana? Asher’s chest rose and fell heavily, and he shouted. She was my fated mate!”
A sharp laugh cut through the tension
“Ex-mate.
All eyes turned to Diana. She stepped forward, her voice steady but edged with pain long buried. “Do I need to remind you, Alpha Asher. That you rejected me five years ago?
Asher froze.
“Diana…” he whispered, instinctively reaching for her.
The sound of Talon’s growl rolled through the room like thunder.
“One more step,” he said, his voice low and feral, “and I will end you where you stand.”
Asher stopped instantly.
“You should know this,” Talon moved closer to Diana, placing himself fully between her and Asher, his hand resting possessively at her back. “No Alpha touches another Alpha’s Luna. Ever.”
