“Swapping?” She dragged the word out of her mouth.
“I’ll give you Jake, and you give me Ryan.”
Olivia took a step back, her heart beating wildly. “Are you crazy?”
“It’s the best way to explore without dumping Ryan. And, even better, you know Jake. He’s hot, don’t you think?”
“He’s not my type.” She didn’t know what to think of Mia’s standby lover. Jake was a wanderer, yet Olivia sensed he was searching for something or someone to hold on to. Mia might be drawn to his mysterious nature, but that was the one thing that put Olivia on edge. She sensed the man had secrets and was not as easygoing as he appeared.
Olivia didn’t care if the guy was sexy and knew how to keep Mia coming back for more. The very idea of sleeping with him made her jumpy, and it felt like her heart was going to burst through her rib cage. Olivia shook her head. “I am not screwing with my best friend’s lover.”
“Why not? I’m giving you permission.”
And that changed everything, didn’t it? If her best friend gave permission – went so far as to encourage it – was it cheating?
Olivia and Mia had been friends since kindergarten and shared everything from clothes to chicken pox. Mia was always generous with her, but this was taking it a step too far. Olivia had to stop her before she approached the guys with the idea.
Olivia tried to come up with a valid reason why this idea wouldn’t work. “Jake isn’t interested in me.”
“Jake likes women, and he likes sex,” she countered with her usual bluntness. “He’s the perfect guy to experiment with. I can vouch for him.”
“Thanks for the recommendation,” Olivia responded drily, “but Ryan isn’t going to agree. And, no offense, if Ryan wanted to sleep with you, he would have done so already.”
Mia’s smile tilted slyly. “Leave it to me.”
Oh, God, what would she do? “No, Mia. I’ve participated in a lot of your insane plans, and I backed you up every time we got caught and you improvised your way out of trouble, but I’m not going to do this one.”
“Why not?” Mia threw an arm around Olivia’s shoulders and gave it a good squeeze. “Come on, you know you want to.”
“Not really. Being in a relationship means saying no to other possibilities.” Olivia frowned. That hadn’t come out right.
“Doesn’t have to be.”
Olivia stepped away from Mia and held up her hands. “This conversation is over.”
“It only has to be one time,” Mia promised.
“Only?” Olivia’s voice rose. “One time is all it takes to ruin everything.”
“I don’t understand. Are you worried that you’re going to ruin things with Ryan, or are you afraid that you might want something more than what Ryan can provide?”
“Both!” Olivia winced when she realized what she said.
Mia pursed her lips as her eyebrows lifted up. “I think we have made a breakthrough.”
Olivia wished she could take that answer back. She wasn’t afraid of anything. If her relationship with her boyfriend wasn’t working, she would end it. She wasn’t hanging on to Ryan because he was her first.
“Listen,” Olivia said quietly as she picked her words with care. “Things are good with Ryan and me. So what if I want something more or different in the bedroom? I’m not going to rock the boat.”
“Then I’ll do it for you. What are friends for?”
“No, Mia.” Olivia grabbed her friend’s arm before the woman went downstairs and confronted Ryan. “Forget I said anything. It’s not worth the risk. I’m not going to act on it even if you hand me the opportunity on a silver platter.”
Mia gave her a long, searching look. “Okay, fine,” she finally said. “If that’s what you want.”
“Fine?” That was all she had to say? Mia was giving up her idea too easily. “What are you up to?”
“Nothing.” Mia shook off Olivia’s hold. “You don’t want to do it, so we won’t.”
Olivia watched her friend with narrowed eyes as she gathered the bag of clothes. Mia looked up. “Don’t you trust me?”
“No.”
Mia smiled, not the least bit offended. “I won’t bring it up again. Pinky swear.”
Olivia watched as Mia held her little finger up. Mia never broke a pinky swear, but Olivia felt like she was missing a loophole. Then again, Mia was moving out of town in a week. How much trouble could she cause in such a short time?
“Olivia?”
Olivia stiffened when she heard Ryan’s low, rough voice at the foot of the stairs. How long had he been there? “Do you think he heard us?” she whispered.
“I wish he did,” Mia muttered. “It would make everything so much easier.”
“Shush!” Olivia took a deep breath and called out to Ryan. “Yeah, honey?”
“Are you going to be up there all night?”
“I’m coming down right now” – she looked at the mess in Mia’s attic bedroom – “unless you need me here.”
“Go on to bed. I’m fine,” Mia assured her. “Anyway, Jake is coming over soon. Perfect time to empty out my sex toy drawer, don’t you think?”
Olivia’s stomach clenched at the mention of Jake. She couldn’t believe Mia had offered to lend him. She didn’t think she could look him in the eye ever again. “All in one night? I don’t think even you can handle that kind of marathon.”
“Not all of the toys are for me.” She wagged her eyebrows suggestively.
