And just because I want nothing to do with him and can’t stand to be around him doesn’t mean I don’t still care about him. We just ran our course, that’s all.

He has another thing coming if he thinks we will ever be getting back together. Not in a million years. Because I’m not in love with him anymore. The illusion is gone, the pink lenses of love crashed, and all I see when I look at him is the painful memories of those last few months. Of all he did.

Fuck it.

I shoot up off the couch and grab Bridget’s shoes. I try to be as quiet as I can. “You need to go.”

“How do you know Nate? He never comes to the club!”

I drop the shoes in front of her. “I knew him before I started working at the club. Now, there’s a window in the kitchen that can get you onto the fire escape-“

“How did you know him before the club? Is that how you got the job?”

“No.” I push the sticking window with all my might. It groans only an inch at a time.

More banging on the door. “Olivia.

Please.”

A sigh unleashes the heaviness on my chest as the window gives. “Great. Come on.”

Bridget stands up from the couch, all ready to go, but she makes no move to come closer. “I’m not leaving until you tell me how you know Nate Hill.”

“Lower your voice,” I hiss.

“Then just tell-“

I can’t believe I have to do this. I can’t believe I really have to fucking tell Bridget who Nate is to me in order to get her out of my apartment. “Nate is my ex-boyfriend.”

Bridget gapes at me. “He’s your-“

“Shhhh! I told you what you wanted to hear, now climb out this window right this fucking second!”

Nate’s voice is loud and clear through the door. “Are you talking to someone?”

Bridget finally comes to her senses and rushes over to me. “What do you mean, he’s your ex-boyfriend?!”

“Is English not your first language?” I growl. “Here, up on the counter.”

I help Bridget up so she can reach the open window.

“But you and Dylan!”

“Now you know why, on top of being his employee, ‘me and Dylan’ isn’t a thing, Bridget! It can never be.” I push her to get her out faster. “Now go!”

She glances out the window at the fire escape and then back at me. “You owe me a way better explanation.”

“Fine.”

“You bring the wine next time. No ice cubes. And god help me, but I’m not coming back to Queens.”

“Olivia, please…” Nate’s voice is no more than a whimper.

I begin to bid Bridget to leave again, but she’s already ahead of the game. “Going, going!”

And in the blink of an eye, she scrambles out of sight, maneuvering the fire escape, the clanging of her feet growing more and more distant with each passing second.

Leaping across the apartment, I make it to the door.

When my hand lands on the handle, though, I pause. Take a deep breath.

I was so concerned with Bridget being here that I didn’t even consider how seeing Nate would make me feel. It’s like worms are crawling along my skin, my gut churns. Uneasy, nauseous.

Better get it over with.

When I open the door, Nate is leaning against the doorframe, his forehead resting on the back of his wrist.

I’d swoon if I still wanted him. But I don’t.

His clear blue eyes are overcome by the gray ring around his irises. And though the corners of his eyes are drooping, he smiles.

Goddamn, he’s got a beautiful smile. Big, wide, bright, dimples in his cheeks.

My stomach drops. I know where I’ve seen those dimples before.

Dylan.

I’m so disgusted. Or maybe I’m just disgusting.

“Olivia.”

“You sound surprised. Like you weren’t just pounding on my door crying out my name like a psycho.”

He blushes, runs a hand through his dirty blond hair. He needs to get it cut; it’s starting to touch his shoulders.

“Can I come in?”

“I guess.”

Nate walks into my apartment, glancing around. “Nice place.”

It doesn’t compare to the apartment we shared.

Even when he didn’t have access to his dad’s money, Nate wasn’t broke.

We had a beautiful beachfront condo together so he could have direct access to the beach even though my commute to work was a pain. “How did you find out my address?”

He avoids looking at me. “Just some research.”

I roll my eyes. “Research? That’s what you call it?”

Nate is quiet. His eyes land on the open window.

Shit, I forgot to close it. I rush past him. “Just burned something. Was trying to air out the apartment.”

As I work the window closed, I kick myself for that shitty fucking lie. You can’t even smell anything burnt in here.

When I manage to get the window closed again, I turn around, and my heartbeat rages.

Nate is right in front of me, cornering me in the kitchen. “It’s good to see you.” He reaches out and touches my arm. “I’ve missed you.”

I rip my arm away from his hand. Knee-jerk reaction. Ever since the altercation with Oliver Worthington, I’ve been very jittery.

Not to mention I don’t want Nate to touch me again. Ever. “What do you want, Nate?”

“I just wanted to see you.” He looks wounded.

That’s how he roped me in so many times during our relationship. Those puppy dog eyes.

And fine, I know Nate would never hurt me like that.

He shoves his hands into his pockets. “I’ve missed you so much. You… You won’t talk to me, what am I supposed to do?”

I stare at him. “We’re broken up.”

“I know, but I’m here in New York, aren’t I? I came out here to…to…”

Eve though he doesn’t say it, I can still hear it.

To get you back.

His eyes are so intent on mine. “You know how much I hate New York.”

I can’t do this. Can’t let him think there’s a chance when I know we will never be together again. I need him to understand it once and for all.

I cross my arms over my chest. “Yeah, well, I love it.”

Nate shakes his head. “It’s… Sure, it’s a great city. But you know, my family is here and…” He sighs. “I came out here despite how I feel about all of that shit. For you.”

A throbbing starts at the base of my sternum.
