“Yes, the drug is not perfect, and if his brain was already confused, he was telling the truth, just not when. Can you look into the pub’s security footage? Do they have one?”
“Yes, they have cameras, and Oddball is on it. Going backwards every day will take a bit of time, because we don’t know how long ago they met at the pub, and may have arranged to meet at the gate to get the information for the hit, and part payment. He said he got paid half, and would get the other half when he did the job.”
“The chick?” I asked, or am I getting confused?
“What about her?”
“She got into our room. You assumed I left the door unlocked, but I know I didn’t, so how did she get in?
Babe?”
“Babe? Huh?” He smiled, leaning in to kiss my hair and snag a bite of the pizza slice I was about to put in my mouth.
“Hey!”
“We have cameras in the hallway, will get Oddball to have security check that our too. That chick should never have got back onto the club grounds. We know she didn’t use the main gate; we are still investigating that one.”
“Hole in the fence somewhere?” I posed, enjoying that Gunner was talking to me about this, when all the stories I have ever heard said they don’t talk shop to women. Even Bluey said the same.
“Possibly, will get the guys to ride the quads, and do the entire perimeter. Any other ideas?”
“I had thought in the boot of a car, or something like that, but that would mean one of the club members brought her back in, because it wasn’t a public day for visitors.”
“I thought of that, it’s impossible to know exactly when she arrived, so we are reviewing the car park security footage. The security guys are busy, and what they don’t know is we have some of our other members checking the same footage just in case the person who brought her in was part of security, and her magic snatch convinced the guy or girl to bring her in.”
“Done, you can finish that off, I think, the bathroom, and get out of here for some fresh air.” Gunner placed the tray aside and carried me to the bathroom, leaving me to do what I needed to do, like wash my face and void my bladder. When I had done, I called him.
The tray was empty, having polished it off like he said he would, and he helped me put on my shoes.
“Can you hold the tray and your crutches?”
“Sure.” He handed me the crutches first and then the tray. He scooped me up and carried me out, making sure the door was locked. Both of us were paranoid now, with that woman sneaking in. I already have enough trust issues without adding to them.
Gunner left me at the bar, placing my crutches within reach, took the tray to the kitchen, and last I saw him, he was headed down the hallway, I assume to see Oddball and his team.
“He left you at the bar?” Strike said in a way of greeting.
“Yep, he has gone down the hall; it won’t be long.”
“Yeah, that’s what they always say, and then time slips away, and it won’t be long. Suddenly, it becomes maybe after dinner, then it’s bedtime, and still no show,” Dizzy complained. It sounded like a typical day, when you get engrossed in something and don’t notice the time, like reading a really good book, you can’t put it down.
“It’s okay, we know where they are and who they are with, sort of, that’s a plus,” I replied softly, my mind drifting to the incident with my exes, triggered again.
“That sounds like a story. Care to tell?” Strike pushed, and I looked at her. Am I ready to share?
Gunner POV
Tucking Cora into bed and leaving her to rest, I didn’t know if she would sleep or not, but she looked a little rattled over the experience, and thought it was best she was alone to sort out her feelings, rather than join the others and get questioned. When she wasn’t ready, I was positive that once she had worked through what happened in her mind, she would be fine; she’s a strong woman, a clear thinker, and that’s the impression I get of her.
Back down in the office, we went over what we heard.
“There’s more to this; His story keeps changing. Do you think that he’s not exactly lying, but believes the bullshiet he’s giving? Cora said it was not foolproof, and he could still lie, but might let slip snippets he didn’t mean to. The prisoner was more talkative once he received that shot.” Snail looked around the room expectantly. None of us knew what to believe anymore. A feeling of betrayal was high; it definitely seemed more and more like an inside job, or someone who wants us to believe it was, to make us look internally.
“What I do know is this was making us jump at shadows, looking suspiciously at our own men, those we have lived with and trusted for many years,” I spoke out loud what most of us might be thinking and feeling, but didn’t want to say out loud.
“Agreed, but we need to investigate all possibilities. Let’s see what the footage reveals. If we can find the day he arrives at the gate to talk to someone, we can investigate from there. I am not suddenly going to distrust my club brothers because of this disjointed man, who can’t get his thoughts together,” Dozer adds, getting nods around the room.
“Do you think he’s one of those who hears voices, and what he was saying was part of different voices?”
“That might explain his constant change of thoughts. Doc?”
“Could be, and that makes him even more dangerous.” We continued bantering around the ideas, but by the time the meeting was over, I was exhausted and wouldn’t mind a mental break from all this.
I went to the dining hall and ate what I could; food wasn’t high on my mind, but since I’d missed lunch, I had to eat, and while I was at it, get something for Cora. I hope she managed to get some sleep.
“Gunner, want to relieve some of the tension?” A girl too young in my mind to be offering this purred seductively to me. I don’t get it; they still try to get me to be them when they know a woman was upstairs sharing my bed.
“Char, you know I amn taken now, and I don’t stray, buzz off.” I flicked her hand away as she reached out to me, touching my shoulder, as if that would make me interested.
