She remained silent.

Jasper continued, “Veronica, Mason definitely cares about you. Even though we don’t know what he’s thinking and why he wanted to break up with you, I’m sure it’s not because he doesn’t love you! If he really had no feelings for you, he would have just stood outside and not come in when the explosion happened!”

Veronica remained silent.

Jasper said, “Veronica, why don’t you try to be with Mason again? If you two go your separate ways, don’t you think it’s a pity? It’s hard to find a man who is willing to risk his life to save you in this life.”

“Even if I want to, Mason may not want to,” Veronica said.

“How do you know if you don’t try?” Jasper encouraged her.

So Veronica decided to give it a try and be with him again.

Anyway… even if he doesn’t want to, they can just continue living as they did after the breakup.

But what if… he still has feelings for her? What if he wants to be with her again…

Her heart was filled with anticipation.

She used to think that as long as he was safe, nothing else mattered.

But after a few days of recuperation, she found herself really hoping to be with him again.

So, people are always greedy. After getting something, they will want more.

In the evening, Veronica turned to the two nurses in the ward and said, “Can you step out for a moment? I want to talk to Mason alone.”

The two nurses were there to take care of them, so they looked at each other hesitantly.

Veronica said, “It will only take a little while. You can wait outside the ward. If there’s anything, we’ll call out and you can hear us.”

“But…” The two nurses were still hesitant.

Mason spoke up, “You can leave now.”

“Okay.” The two nurses finally left the ward.

Mason’s ward was originally quite large, but now only Veronica and Mason were left. Veronica suddenly felt a sense of emptiness.

“I have something to tell you,” Veronica said as she got off the bed.

After a few days of rest, she could walk now, but Mason was more seriously injured and had one leg in a cast. Even if he wanted to get off the bed, he had to be helped by someone.

At the moment, Mason was still sitting on the bed, his black eyes looking at Veronica. There was a hint of confusion in his eyes, making it hard to guess what he was thinking.

She felt nervous and oppressed when he stared at her like that. She didn’t know when it started.

Veronica took a deep breath and told herself not to be afraid.

She saw it as an opportunity for herself. Even if it didn’t work out, she wouldn’t lose anything, right?

Because…she had nothing left to lose!

“What do you want to say?” Mason’s voice broke the silence.

“I…,” Veronica hesitated for a moment and said, “I didn’t expect Daniel to do something like this.”

“So, you want to plead for him and get him a light sentence?” Mason asked.

“Huh?” Veronica was taken aback, then quickly said, “I didn’t think of that.”

“If you didn’t think of that, then why bring him up?” he said, not looking at her again. “I’m tired and want to rest. If you want to talk about Daniel, I’m not interested.”

Veronica was speechless. Why did he assume that she must want to talk about Daniel?

She just used Daniel as a conversation starter!

Seeing that Mason seemed to really want to lie down, Veronica quickly walked to his bedside and helped him up by the waist.

Her purpose was to not let him lie down like that, because she hadn’t finished talking yet!

But this action added a hint of ambiguity between the two.

“What are you doing?” he glanced at her lightly.

“I…I haven’t finished talking. I want to finish talking with you,”

Veronica said.

Mason pursed his lips. “Okay, you can speak.”

Veronica saw that he didn’t ask her to let go of his hand, so she simply let her hand continue to rest against his waist.

Being close to him again, it felt like they were back to the past, with no misunderstandings, no conflicts, and no separation.

Taking a deep breath, Veronica continued, “I mentioned Daniel not to plead for him, but because it was my mistake that led to my own kidnapping and implicated you. I’m sorry.”

“No need to apologize. Since you know you almost lost your life this time, don’t misjudge people like that again,” Mason said.

“And…” Veronica paused, “When you came to rescue me, I was both happy and scared!”

He looked at her, with a hint of confusion in his eyes.

“I was happy that you were willing to risk your life to save me, which means I’m not insignificant to you and you still care about me. But I was also scared that we would die together in the old campus and that I would implicate you.”

Veronica glanced at the areas where Mason’s bandages were visible outside of his hospital gown.

But in the end, she still implicated him!

If it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t have suffered these injuries.

“Mason, I love you. I’m sure of my feelings, but do you love me? Are you willing to be with me again?”

she asked.

God knows how much courage it took for her to say these words.

She was afraid of being rejected, afraid that it was all in her head, afraid of expecting too much and ending up disappointed.

He frowned, “What did you say?”

“I said I love you. If you love me too, I hope we can be together again,” Veronica said.

He remained silent, and in the quiet hospital room, every minute seemed particularly long.

He said nothing, just looked at her, and she almost held her breath waiting for his answer.

At this moment, the distance between the two of them was very close, and she could even touch his face with just a slight movement of her head.

“Saving you doesn’t mean anything,” he finally spoke.

This sentence was like a disguised rejection.

Veronica felt a wave of disappointment in her heart, but she still didn’t want to give up. “So, would you risk your life to save someone who is not related to you by blood?”

“After all, you have been with me for many years. Saving you is just human nature, isn’t it?” he replied.

“Then why did you push me away and let me escape when you were hit by a rock in the end? Why did you just let me go when I was trying to move the rocks? Were you afraid that I would die too?” Veronica asked again.

“Because I didn’t think it would be useful for you to stay there. In that case, it would be more practical for you to escape first,” Jasper replied expressionlessly.

“But the fact is, it was useful for me to stay there and move the rocks off your leg. We both survived!”

Veronica looked at Mason with a determined gaze.

“Mason, you were willing to risk your life to save me, but why did you still want to break up with me?”

Veronica asked.

Mason pursed his thin lips and looked straight at her.

She was asking him why…

In fact, he had asked himself why!

He had already decided not to care about her anymore, not to be controlled by this woman anymore, but why did he still risk his life to save her when he found out she was in danger?

Even in the end, he gave her the chance to survive, just hoping that she would live.

It seemed as though in his subconscious, her life was more important than his own.

“Are you worried that I don’t love you enough? Afraid that one day I’ll fall in love with someone else?

Afraid that your feelings will once again be misplaced?” She spoke the answer he had been searching for.

This was the answer she had come to after much contemplation.

“Veronica, I don’t want to be hypnotized again. I don’t want to look back on my life and realize that I was just a passerby.”

Mason said, this feeling was not a good one.

Sometimes it even made him feel less than human.

It was as if his life had become insignificant, and his emotions. were becoming increasingly diluted.

It was as if the part of him that belonged to humanity was slowly being severed.

“If you don’t want to be hypnotized again, then why not trust me this time?” Veronica murmured, “Trust that my feelings for you will last until the end, until the day we truly die.”

“I have trusted you before.” He said.

If he didn’t trust her, he wouldn’t have started a relationship with her in the first place.

“Was that trust destroyed because I asked you not to hit Daniel?” Veronica continued.

“When it came time to make a choice, you didn’t stand by my side, did you?” Mason said, “Veronica, if you don’t want me to ruin you in the future, then you better leave me now!”

She glared at him, “What do you mean by ‘ruin me in the future’?”

“My emotions are too extreme, and you can’t handle my extreme emotions.” He said, “Yes, I understand why you asked me not to hit Daniel, but what does that matter? I’m tired. If I continue to be with you, I’ll be constantly guessing how much you really love me. When I see you walking with other men, I’ll wonder if you’ll fall in love with someone else, if you’ll leave me. Do you understand this anxious and uneasy feeling?”
