“Vivian, Laura and I are getting married.”
Vivian’s eyes instantly welled up with tears.
“Jake… are you saying… you’re going to leave me?”
For the first time, Jake felt a headache coming on.
But he remained patient.
“I still have a responsibility for you. I chose to fulfill your last wish because I wanted you to let go and start your own life.”
At his words, Vivian’s body stiffened.
She gasped, clutching her chest, her breathing turning shallow.
Hearing the commotion, Josh and the nurses rushed in.
…
Half an hour later, Josh walked out into the hospital corridor.
Jake stood there, leaning against the wall, cigarette between his fingers, gaze lowered in thought.
Josh dismissed the nurses before approaching him.
“Jake, we found a matching donor for Vivian’s heart transplant. If all goes well, she’ll have surgery next month. Until then, she can’t afford any more stress.”
Josh sighed.
“Look, Jake, you know Laura is trying to destroy Vivian. She wants her dead. Are you really going to let her keep doing this?”
Jake flicked his cigarette, watching the ashes fall.
His voice was cold.
“Take care of her. Call me if anything happens.”
Then, he walked away.
Josh exhaled and stepped back into the room.
“Alright, he’s gone. Drop the act.”
Vivian opened her eyes, still looking pale.
“I just… I don’t want Jake to leave me.”
Josh frowned.
“Vivian, Jake and Laura are engaged. No matter what you do, they’re going to get married.”
Vivian’s eyes darkened.
“No. I love Jake. Laura’s loved him for five years… but I’ve loved him for seven.”
Her lips curled into a cold, determined smile.
“As long as I’m here, I will never let Jake marry that whore.”
At a bar, Xavier scrolled through his phone.
A new video had surfaced – Vivian jumping into the pool, Jake rushing to save her, and Laura getting discarded once again.
The group chat was already full of mindless jokes.
After watching, Xavier glanced at the man sitting on the sofa beside him.
Shaun was lounging lazily, one arm draped over the back of the couch, holding a nearly burnt-out cigarette between his long fingers. His gaze was indifferent, fixed on the chaotic dance floor.
Xavier thought for a moment before smirking.
“Shaun, I’ve got a video you might want to see.”
Shaun barely glanced at him, his voice casual.
“Not interested in your gossip videos.”
“It’s about your one-night stand.”
“Laura?” Shaun’s brow furrowed as he stubbed out his cigarette in the deep gray crystal ashtray. He reached over, grabbed Xavier’s phone, and played the video.
As soon as he finished watching, his expression darkened.
He tossed the phone onto the table, grabbed his jacket, and strode out.
Xavier hadn’t expected Shaun to react so quickly.
He called after him, “Shaun, you’re leaving just like that? The real party hasn’t even started.”
Sure, Laura was pretty, but she was Jake’s fiancée. Was Shaun really about to make himself the other man?
…
After dealing with Jasper and the others, Laura had the driver take her back to Brookhaven Estates.
When she arrived at the entrance, she stepped out of the car.
A light evening breeze swept over her, slightly sobering her up.
Just as she was about to walk into the complex, bright headlights suddenly beamed straight at her from a distance, piercing through the darkness.
The intense glare forced her to lift a hand to shield her eyes. Peering through her fingers, she recognized the sleek black Ferrari.
It looked familiar.
And in a neighborhood like hers, it was certainly out of place.
Before she could react, the Ferrari let out a short, arrogant honk, shattering the silence of the night.
Laura blinked. Then, realization hit.
Shaun. Why was he here? Was he looking for her?
Her eyes darted around, but she was the only person outside at this hour.
After a brief hesitation, she took small steps toward the car.
At the same time, Shaun opened the door and stepped out.
He leaned lazily against the car, hands tucked in his pockets, his dark gaze fixed on the approaching woman.
Laura stopped in front of him.
He was dressed simply yet impeccably in a gray shirt. His tie was undone, and the top few buttons of his shirt were left open, revealing the cool, sharp lines of his collarbone. His sleeves were casually rolled up, exposing his forearms, where veins ran subtly beneath the skin.
Under the streetlight, shadows cast over his features, accentuating his deep-set eyes and chiseled jawline.
“Shaun, what are you doing here?”
Shaun’s eyes lingered on her face, studying the curve of her nose, the shape of her lips.
After a moment, he reached into his pocket.
A crystal bracelet slipped through his fingers, the green stones shimmering under the soft glow of the streetlamp.
Laura’s breath hitched.
This was the bracelet her grandmother had given her when she married into the Depp family. It had been specially blessed for protection.
With everything that had happened, she hadn’t even realized it was missing.
“You left this in my car,” Shaun said.
“Thank you for bringing it back so late.”
Laura reached out to take it, but Shaun smoothly lifted his hand higher.
He was nearly six foot three, while she barely reached five foot five. Even when she stood on her tiptoes, stretching as far as she could, she still couldn’t reach.
Her fair face scrunched up in frustration.
After everything that had happened tonight, she wasn’t exactly in the best mood.
