“Not to me, if you touch that woman, or offend her or hurt her in any way, and you will find out why I am the enforcer of this club, she’s going to be wearing my patch one day, so keep your hands, eyes, and mind off her. Or any woman who says no. If I hear you force yourself on a girl, you might lose those things you call balls.”

“Geez, you got it bad, man, really bad, no woman should twist your pants in that tight a knot, they are only good for one thing, and some aren’t even good at that. Bros come first, always.” Stacks tried to deflect, but only dug the hole deeper each time he opened his gob.

“Try saying that to any member who has a woman and see how they react. The president wouldn’t be so kind as I am right now if you called his woman a leg spreader. He would have you in the hospital so fast, you wouldn’t have the chance to fart.” I was still trying to calm myself down. This guy was pushing all my wrong buttons; at least I know that Cora is a trigger for me. Like no woman had done before. Even the chick I thought I loved, till I caught her with another guy. I walked away from her and the relationship. I was going to give her my cut, make her my woman; it hurt to walk away, but it didn’t break me. Cora might break me; if I can’t keep her, she’s the one.

“I would never….”

“You just did, but you’re so dumb, you can’t hear the bullshyt coming from your own mouth.” I turned away, my temper under control, leaving the men stunned at my sudden reaction, because I never lose control, not like that, ever. But for Cora, I almost completely lost it. I saw red and wanted to make him hurt.

My bike was left carelessly on the floor, like a crumpled mess. It hurts to see it damaged. It was my pride and joy, and I kept it in tip-top condition. I cleared a space, pulled my bike onto it, looked it over with a critical eye, and got it into a stand before working on it: removing the buckled front wheel, then the front forks. They are bent and would need replacing. From what I can tell, I was lucky. The most expensive parts weren’t damaged, the paintwork will need some work, but overall, considering how she bucked me off, I was expecting more damage than that. I was left alone for a while, as I lost time working on my bike. “Gunner,” the voice of our president called out, standing close by, but not encroaching on my space.

I looked up at him and saw our VP with him.

“Sup?” I asked as I wiped my hands on some rags.

“Heard you had words earlier, care to give your side of the story?” Dozer asked, looking at my bike, before looking back at me. I had done a lot of work in a short space of time.

“What’s to tell? Stacks was running his mouth like usual, and I was not impressed this time.”

“You threatened him?”

So I gave him a word-by-word recount of what was said and how it was said. By the time I was done, even Oddball was fuming.

“Thought he was speaking out of his arzz, he’s close to losing that patch, at the rate he’s going,” Oddball replied thoughtfully.

“Do you think he had anything to do with that shooter?” We still hadn’t got any answers from the prisoner, mind you, he was unconscious most of the time, and wasn’t in much of a condition to speak.

“Maybe when the prisoner wakes up, and we go at him again, we can bring Stacks into the cell, see what reaction we get, and take Cora in too. She wants to give that guy a piece of her mind. Tomorrow will be soon enough. Give the prisoner time to recover, so we can see if he recognises Stacks before he tries to cover it up. I don’t like how he has been acting lately, and gaining a few followers who are copying him might be a phase, but we need to keep a closer eye on him and his two goons. Will get some of our men to watch and follow them around, to see if we can pick up anything. They might be ready to defect to another club, and I don’t want them to leave a trail of distrust and destruction along the way. We have seen it happen before; they think it’s better somewhere else.” That was the most Oddball had said outside the office. Mind you, we are the only ones in this building at the moment; the rest are getting ready for the party. I hadn’t realised how much time had gone by.

“Finished up, I need you there soon. I will let you know who I pick to be watchers, and can back them up if need be,” Dozer added, as he looked around, ensuring we were still alone.

“About half an hour, I need to finish this.” I was in the middle of draining the oil from the engine. I was going to give it a full service as I repaired the broken parts.

They nodded and left me to it, and I wondered briefly what lies Stacks had given the president and VP to come a-calling.

Cora POV

Scones took the phone, looked at the pictures again, humming, then turned it around and back as she looked at them.

“That girl is flexible,” Scones suddenly said, and turned the phone to show me the picture she was talking about.

“Yeah, she has always been that way, a cheerleader and did all sorts of acrobatics in high school. Me not so much. It never interested me. I prefer to be on the field, roughing out, rather than on the sidelines, being pretty. She was the prom queen and the best at this and that when it came to looks and fashion; she raised money; academically, she was mid-range, using me and my hotes to scrape through. It never bothered me that she went out and partied, had a good time, and then borrowed my notes to study on the last day or to do assignments. I believed we all had our talents and never judged her for her promiscuous ways. Should have seen the writing on the wall; I trust them too much. Making it easy to fool me.” I sniffled; I had tears running down my cheeks. As I talked about this, Scones called them healing tears, and said to let them all out so I could move on and get out of the rut that would set in if I let it. I knew she was right; what I had seen had played on my mind a lot, as I kept reviewing how it happened, and when it might have started.

“It’s not wrong to trust those you believe are your friends. You had what you thought would be a lifelong friendship, I get it. You did nothing wrong. This was not your fault. You can’t blame your job or the long working hours for giving them opportunities to betray you. You are not responsible for how they behave; they have a mind of their own, and if doing that behind your back, and laughing about it in a sort of code, when around you, is not your issue, it’s theirs. They were content to hide what they wanted. I am sure if they said something, and said they wanted to be a thriple or whatever it’s called, you would have handled it. Understood or tried to. They didn’t just enjoy what they were doing in bed; they got a thrill from keeping it a secret. Knowing the risk of losing their friend, they did it anyway, and the longer they got away with it, the more they believed they would never find out and that no harm was being done. Don’t let their actions eat away at you and take the goodness out of you. Nothing worse than a bitter woman(“Don’t let that happen.” Scones was like my grandma’s. I miss her.

“Thanks.” I sniffed again, Scones handing over the tissue box, causing me to give a weak chuckle.

“Now, are you ready for this? Voice or text first?”

“Voice, let’s get them cleared so that I can get real messages. They had filled that box up and blocked their numbers. I don’t want them filling it up again.” I went to take my phone back, but she batted my hand away.

“Who do you want to start with?”

“Step-brother, then ex-boyfriend, and so-called friend at the very end.”

The voice chats were the same, starting with the so-called concerned voices: ‘Where are you?’ You’re late, or ‘aren’t you coming to dinner?’, then became more concerned, sounding real, when no answer happened, and became angry for not replying. All three sort of said the same thing, which doesn’t surprise me.

The text messages, Scones read them out. My ex-boyfriend, by the second-to last test message, was a bit of a surprise. He said he was worried that something had happened to me, so he broke into my apartment to find a guy asleep in my bed, and was angry that I was cheating on him.

Me!

Cheating on him, that’s a laugh, what a two-faced, lying sack of potatoes he is.

The last text was full of apologies because he jumped to the wrong conclusion. He was worried about where I was and whether I was okay, and he asked me to please get in touch with him.

Not yet, I won’t, not till I am ready to talk about what I have seen with them.

My step-brother was sent three text messages, all degrading as usual, and telling me to stop sulking and being a spoiled brat. He’s the spoiled one, not me, never has been. Once mum was gone and dad brought that viper home, all the niceties died, and that witch became a dragon overnight when she found out dad wasn’t as rich as she thought he was. Yeah, he’s the same. When he was being nice, it was because he wanted something from me; I learned that one early.
