“Then you are his, about time, we’ve been waiting what feels like forever for him to choose a woman. He will look after you. Don’t fret about that.” Sounded like that was expected. I am not sure how I feel about that, like, when did I agree with it?
“What makes you think I would be staying?” I asked, trying to make sense of this conversation.
“What? Do you have a man?”
“Nope, the scumbag, dirty rotten cheater, has been going on behind my back for months, not interested in getting another cheating, lying scumbag.” I put a bit more venom in my voice, which surprised even me. I hadn’t really taken the time to digest what I’d seen at his place or to look at the messages left for me. “Not all men are like that. Give Gunner a chance.” Scones was a lovely lady. We talked about all sorts of things while we were cooking. This was the first time she asked about something personal, as it was too close and raw to my heart.
“Yeah, right.” I scoffed.
“You sound a bit jaded, girl. Don’t let one scumbag ruin it for all men. I am guessing this has happened recently, for you to be so angry.” Scone was seated opposite me, the bench clean, and we were waiting for the muffins to come out of the oven, the pies, and sausage rolls done and cooling on a tray.
“Yeah, only four days ago, they sent me a slew of messages that I have yet to look at. I caught them and ran; they didn’t know I had caught them.” I admitted it felt strange to be talking to Scones like this, a woman I met a few hours ago. She reminded me of Grandma, before she died. Warm and caring.
“That’s why there is so much anger and hurt; you have come to the right place to heal. Want to talk about it?”
Did 1?
Was Scones the right person to talk to about it?
“What we are going to discuss now must stay here?” I asked, not liking the idea of being club gossip.
“I promise I won’t say a word to anyone. Not even Gunner.” She made a cross over her heart.
Instead of talking, I grabbed my phone and shared the photos. How I managed to stay long enough to take a few was beyond me. The sight made me sick.
“Tell who they are.” Scones handed back the phone.
“The woman was my long-time, now ex-friend, who I had been with since kindergarten, the last person I would have expected to see cheating with my boyfriend. The man in the middle, giving and taking, as it were, is my now ex-boyfriend, and the man giving my ex a serve from behind is my step-brother.” I spat the last bit out with disgust.
“So before this, you didn’t suspect?”
“Nope, I work a lot of night shifts, being a nurse can be demanding, then spending time together, I thought it was nice that my ex-friend was chasing my step-brother. Boy, did I get that all wrong? I took the pictures so they couldn’t deny it, but I went home, called the hospital that I worked at, let my supervisor in on what I saw, and asked for the job at Clearwater, packed my bags, and here I am.”
“Maybe it’s time to look at those messages. I can sit with you, offer support, and be a shoulder to cry on. Let’s get out of here, somewhere quieter and won’t get walked into.” I nodded to her offer. I didn’t want to look at them on my own.
After we had taken the food out of the oven and cleaned the kitchen, she took me to a room on the same floor as Gunner’s, my room, our room. I am so mixed up.
Her room was warm and cozy, a home, with a nice table and chairs on the balcony, a pillow, and a throw rug. That was where she was taking me. She grabbed a box of tissues on the way to the balcony, and together we sat, quietly at first.
“What do you want to start with? The text messages or the voice messages?”
“Text, I don’t want to hear their voices, might even delete all the voice messages.” I took a deep breath and opened my phone.
“Give it to me, and I will read them out. Who do you want to start with?” I handed the phone over and sat back, ready to hear the lying, cheating sons and anarchy, try to weasel their way through all of this.
Gunner POV
After leaving Cora in the capable hands of Scones, ensuring they contacted me if Cora needed help, I headed to the workshop.
The workshop is fully equipped and better than the shop in town, serving both the public and club members. We own several businesses in town, and they are run by club members. We do community work when called for, and other work around town. We are proud of our little town. We might be seen as trouble by some who have a fear of what they don’t know, but most who have been in the town for a long while are happy we are here, because we keep drugs out of our town, the best we can, and have been called upon a few times to run some riffraff out of town.
Anyway, this workshop is the biggest shed we have on the property. It’s broken into sections: service, minor repairs, rebuilds (like the engine or gearbox), and wrecks that need more work than they are worth and can be broken down into parts if someone wants to put the effort into restoring the bike. It’s costly and often not worth the effort for most guys.
My bike was in the minor repairs area, and that was where I was headed. I looked around as I walked. We have a few more bikes that need service, and we are too lazy to take them to town to get them done. We have a running tab; the guys pay at the end of the month, or have a payment plan in place if the job was large, and they were short on cash. It’s a business, even if it was on club grounds, and an extension of the one in town.
“Gunner, what’s with the chick? Is she going to be a new club leg spreader?” One of the guys asked as I walked by, making his mates laugh.
“Wouldn’t mind giving her a go when you are done with her,” Another said, the three laughing as if it were a huge joke.
“Wonder if she’s up to multiple men at the same time.”
I stopped dead in my tracks, turned to look at them, man, my rage roaring so fast it scared me, that his making such a suggestion could work me up this fast. I had to count to ten before responding. Or this guy would have a broken nose.
“Stacks, I suggest you try thinking with your head instead of your d**k, because I am close to ripping you a new one. That woman is MINE. Got it! Besides, you don’t go around making lewd comments about people you don’t know. If you know what’s good for you, you will shut that hole you call a mouth and engage that pea brain of yours before you lose some teeth, and I might even remove that tongue, because nothing good comes out of the hole.” I growled the last part through my gritted teeth, my temper almost at boiling point.
He raised his hands in surrender, the others looking on in shock. This was out of character for me. I have the reputation of never losing the plot, like ever.
Got it, back off, man, it was a joke.” He defended himself, lying through his teeth.
