I lunged . Hard. Fast. My wolf screamed at me to move and I did. Not as Luna. Not as Ryan’s mate. Not as a woman who hated this man for what he did. I moved as Scarlett. The girl who once loved him more than she loved herself. The one who couldn’t watch someone she once held in her heart be gutted in the middle of her office lobby.
“Stop!” I shouted as I threw myself between them, arms spread wide, chest heaving, standing right in front of Bryan, my body the only wall between his life and the man’s blade. “Put it down,” I said, voice shaking but firm, eyes locked with the stranger’s. “Whatever this is… whatever happened… this isn’t it. This isn’t how your story ends.”
He flinched.
“Leave,” I whispered, softer now. “Go somewhere. Start over. You can still start over. Just don’t do this. Don’t throw your whole life away for one moment.”
He blinked. Once. Then again. Something shifted in his stare-recognition maybe. Or pity.
Then he snarled, “You’re insane.”
And lunged.
I barely had time to push Bryan back. My hands hit his chest as I shoved him out of the way, hard enough to knock him sideways. The blade came fast and I felt it before I saw it-white-hot pain searing through my arm. A crack in my breath. Then warmth spilled down my elbow. My knees buckled.
People screamed. Blood hit the floor before I did. I dropped.
The sound was dulled. I could feel the pressure, the panic, voices shouting, footsteps pounding-but none of it mattered. My vision blurred. I saw red. So much red.
Guards tackled the man, dragged him down fast. His knife hit the floor and clattered like thunder in my skull. Bryan was beside me before I could blink.
“Scarlett!” His voice cracked. Raw. Broken.
I blinked slowly. My hands felt heavy. My wolf was spinning, pacing, howling beneath my skin. Something about being stabbed made everything slow down but also sharpen.
“Stay with me,” he begged, clutching my hand.
“Scarlett, please, don’t close your eyes. Don’t-” He was shouting, shaking, grabbing at his earpiece, yelling something I couldn’t catch, something about healers, about blood, about Alpha clearance now.
“I’m… I’m fine…” I tried to say, but my mouth wasn’t working right. My voice didn’t sound like mine as everything went dark while I slipped out of consciousness.
RYAN’S POV
The council room was filled with egoistic men, and too many years of useless tradition. I sat at the head, fingers drumming slow against the table, jaw locked, trying not to snap while the Elders talked in circles about the same thing they’d brought up three times already-territory lines, rogue patrols, old treaties we didn’t even follow anymore.
Beta Derek stood at the wall, arms folded, silent, waiting like always.
I didn’t speak much. I let them go on. Because I knew the second I opened my mouth, it wouldn’t be polite.
Then one of them-Elder Toman, crusty old wolf who always ranted about women and politics-leaned forward with that look on his face.
“And of course, Alpha,” he began, voice all soft and fake-respectful,
“some of us have noticed… the lack of talk. Luna’s condition. Her absence. Whispers of instability-“
“She’s not a breeder,” I snapped, voice low but sharp.
“She’s my mate.” The room stiffened. Another Elder-Merra-clicked her tongue.
“You must understand, the pack needs continuity. Strength. Luna must be visible. Present. She hasn’t been seen at any function. No patrol. No public run. And yet the bond-“
“Is sealed,” I cut in. “Fully.”
Their expressions changed. Like someone had just slapped the table. Surprise. Shock. Someone grumbled something under their breath. Toman muttered, It’s still unwise.
“I don’t care what’s wise to you, ” I said, eyes hard. “We’re bonded. Recently. She’s adjusting. You don’t speak her name unless you’ve earned the right.”
“Alpha, you can’t-“
“I can. ” I leaned forward, letting the wolf rise just enough into my voice to send a chill across the table. “And I will. This conversation ends now.”
They all went quiet.
Tension rippled like static in the room. Chairs creaked. Teeth clenched. But none of them dared speak again. Then the doors burst open. Derek. He was moving fast. His face told me before his mouth did. I stood before he even said a word.
“There’s a call,” he said, breath tight. “You need to take it.”
“Who?” I asked, already pulling out my phone.
“Speak for me,” I added quickly, tossing it to him. He caught it. I hit the answer button.
“Alpha Ryan,” the voice came through. He panicked while speaking, which meant something was terribly wrong.
“Speak. What is it?” I asked, suspicion etched into my tone as I spoke.
But it wasn’t the voice that told me. It was Derek. His eyes widened. His jaw twitched. He looked like someone had just punched the breath out of him. I turned fast.
“What is it?” I demanded. “Derek-what happened?” His throat moved. Then he met my eyes.
“It’s Scarlett,” he said. “She’s been stabbed.”
Derek didn’t speak much as he drove. He didn’t have to. The energy inside the car was thick enough to choke on. My wolf was clawing at the edges of my skin, pacing, pushing, growling low in my chest like it wanted to break bones until everything was still.
I sat stiff in the chair, my hands clenched on the arms, jaw locked. My legs ached. My fingers twitched. But I didn’t say a word. All I kept hearing was Derek’s voice in that damn room- Scarlett’s been stabbed.
The second the wheels hit the pavement outside the hospital, I was already unlocking the ramp. Derek moved fast, clearing people, parting hallways. The nurse at the door started to speak, but one look from him shut her right up.
They took me straight in.
She was stable, they said. Still unconscious. Breathing steady. Stab wound on her side. Deep, but not fatal. The bleeding had stopped. The doctors had done what they could, and now she was just resting.
Resting. Like she hadn’t bled all over the damn lobby for Bryan. I felt my chest burn.
Doctor Malin stepped in, voice low, explaining her vitals, where the wound hit, how close it came to something worse. I nodded, didn’t blink, didn’t flinch. My body stayed still, but my wolf was pacing, biting at the inside of my ribs, begging for something to tear.
Then I heard his voice.
