“I’ll fucking murder you myself. I swear it… you hurt my mate, you put on this…”
“It wasn’t me!” he retorted angrily, rolling off his words as he spoke. A loud scoff broke free from my lips hearing him stutter on. He could have fooled me with that innocent look in his eyes, stammering words and trembling body.
“If he did, he had done you a favour, son. He had seen what sort of woman she was. I understand she may have swindled you, seduced you, and it’s okay to make mistakes, but understand now that you would have nothing to do with her. You won’t.”
I slammed my fists into the table, harsh enough to have it rattling at its feet. Silence again, once stilled between us all. My eyes moved over to Scarlett’s, who now had a mist of tears clouding her gaze.
“You do not get to tell me what to do anymore. May I remind you, I am alpha to this pack! And this is my pack mansion. You passed it down to my brother and I, I inherited it all by a stroke. I would not let you speak to my mate like that. She is mine and mine alone!” I snapped.
My wolf snapped along with me, anger rumbling in his voice. He was just as pissed as I was, and the only reason we both condoned his insolence was because he raised us and loved us dearly.
“I’m sorry, but we’ll be taking our leave now.” I spoke, wheeling over to Scarlett. Her trembling hand had grasped around mine as I locked our fingers together.
“If you leave now, I no longer want anything to do with you. Of course you’ll have the title alpha, but you wouldn’t be my grandson anymore,” he spoke icily, his voice not for once faltering.
“Yes. I think that’s too extreme, it isn’t uncle Ryan’s fault. It’s that whore of a mate he got…”
“If you say a single more word, I’ll gut you myself and drag you out from here on. I swear by the moon goddess I do. I don’t care a thing about the Hamilton name, and I do not care about severing ties as well,” I spoke smoothly.
I tugged Scarlett closer, leading her towards the entrance, hoping to put an end to this madness and get her safe back home. I’d dragged her into this mess, into this pack, into this family, and no woman of mine would be treated like that.
“I mean it – you walk out, you do not exist to me anymore, Ryan,” grandfather’s voice called out again, causing me to stop wheeling. My head tilted in his direction and a humorless, dark bark of laughter coursed out of my lips.
“You’d lost me the moment you asked me to choose between my own mate, which I’d just marked, and a family… She is my mate, and my family, and I’d do anything and everything just to be with her. Not this.”
Turning toward the doors, I wheeled forward again, except Scarlett didn’t budge. Her pleading rounded eyes met with mine as though waiting for me to take back my decision.
“You… it’s… Ryan!” she asked. But I’d made up my mind. A smile formed on my lips as I nudged at her hand in a reassuring manner.
“Comewith me. You are my family, Scarlett… all I’ll ever need.”
Scarlett’S POV
Shame. Fear, anger, and finally relief all flooded me at once. As my trembling body settled into the car right beside Ryan,he hasn’t said a word to me. He didn’t need to. Thanks to the mate bond, the mark finally completed, I could feel his impulses, and I’d felt a million different notions of rage when he’d spoken, back at the party.
I didn’t know what to think or who to believe anymore. Bryan had looked hopeless, but then was I meant to believe him? He’d been the one who sent those pictures to my mate. He’d been the same one to bring the conversation up when we had been speaking today-it had always been him, so why exactly would I rule out this single possibility?
“Scarlett,” Ryan breathed out, his touch soothing me as he glided his palms across my thighs. A streak of sweat fell off my eye, sliding down my cheeks as a wave of emotion rushed through me.
“Scarlett, don’t cry. I’ll find a way to make Bryan pay, family or not. No one hurts my Luna and gets away with it, and he would be no exception-he would, matter of fact, be an example,” Ryan threatened, his eyes coldly glancing at mine. He felt distant. And I didn’t want this-for him, for us.
“Ryan, don’t,” I breathed out softly, sniffing, trying to hold in my tears. At this point I didn’t care anymore. Beta Derek hadn’t for one glance looked backwards although he could hear all that was going on. And I didn’t have it in me to care much about his thoughts or anything else that might have swarmed in his mind.
“I don’t want this. It’s fine. Now it’s finally out, I feel as though I can breathe again, so please, Ryan. Let it go. I want-“
“Nonsense,” he retorted with a yell, snatching his arms off my thighs as the car stopped to a halt. He alighted from the car, this time ignoring his wheelchair as he stormed into the house.
Beta Derek had been let in on the secret before I was, which had been a normal reaction. He’d bowed, folded the wheelchair, and handed it over to me.
“I’ll be leading now, Mrs. Hamilton,” Beta Derek spoke, turning back toward the car as I headed into the house. A million and one thoughts crept up my mind.
“He’d pissed,” my wolf mumbled within me. I could feel her hesitation-he had every right to, but I knew he’d only get himself hurt. I didn’t need more for him. He’s proved time after time I could trust him. And I knew if I didn’t act on time, he’ll sever ties with his family just as though to prove a point to me.
That wasn’t what I wanted. Him cutting off his family on my behalf wouldn’t get me anywhere. It’d only bring up more scars than he had already.
“I’m sorry, Ryan,” I spoke as soon as I walked through the doors to our room. He groaned at me through the mirror, loosening the buttons on his shirt.
“Sorry? Oh baby, it’s not you who would be sorry-it’s Bryan,” he hushed, cupping my cheeks in his palms as he approached me with a smile.
“No! Stop. This… all of this. I don’t want you pushing on. I want us to be happy. I was only worried you’ll turn on me. And you didn’t. You stayed by my side-proved to be an Alpha and a mate. And please, all I need is you. Nothing else,” I spoke, calm and gentle in my words, smiling through, although it hadn’t been a lie.
His gaze softened. His tensed shoulders slowly relaxed into my touch.
“I just… he hurt you, Scarlett. He won’t stop. I need… I can’t just let someone make you shed tears. I hate to see you in pain,” he murmured beneath his breath.
Now it was my turn to pacify him. He’d been possessive, but now, up close, I’d experienced how possessive Alphas could be-and this… I didn’t want him going on a full spiteful rage quest and letting his wolf take control.
“It’s okay. Now it’s out, he has nothing else on me. I don’t work for him anymore, and I can breathe finally. I don’t have any secrets withheld from you,” I reassured again, leaning closer. Silence followed as he leaned into me, wrapping me into a warm embrace, his lips merely inches apart from mine.
A call buzzed into his phone, breaking the tension between us. Reluctantly, he pulled away, his eyes on the screen.
“It’s Grandfather.”
Scarlett’S POV
I nodded as soon as I heard what Ryan said. I could only wonder what it felt and seemed like, amongst a pack of wolves, two alphas fighting. The mere thought of it made a chill run down my spine.
I turned on my feet, headed towards the door, granting them the privacy needed when Ryan’s hand clung to mine.
“Where are you going?” he asked, concern hinted at in his tone… Oh, this wasn’t going to end well. I was afraid now I’ve somehow managed to wake the one dormant possessive side of Ryan-there would be no going back.
“I’m out, just stepping into the kitchen to whip us something. I’m certain you’ll need to speak to him again,” I muttered beneath my voice, trying to make certain of the situation. His grasp loosened slowly, but he only rolled his eyes as he picked the call.
“Stay. I have nothing to hide. And we’ll both listen to him,” he argued-only that now I was smarter to keep up to the end of my words. Pushing beyond my limits here wasn’t going to do me any help of any sort.
Had his father finally called to kick him out of the family? Threaten to cut off alliances with the pack? Ask other neighboring packs to toss us out?
Thinking of it made my belly churn. He wouldn’t do that to his own grandson now would he?
“Is Scarlett there!” the grandfather’s voice boomed on the other end of the call. Our eyes locked before he sighed into the phone.
“She is. Please… do go ahead and say all you have to because I won’t be picking any of your calls anymore either,” Ryan asserted, and my heart swelled at this gesture from him.
He loved me. He meant it… more than an Alpha. He was more-way better. He was a supporter, and he stood by me. I knew it now.
“About that, I’d like to tender my apology to Mrs. Hamilton. Is Scarlett there for me to speak to?” he asked again. This time, both of our eyes locked again. He hesitated for a while, but I’d given him a reassuring smile, nodding slowly as a gesture that it was fine with me.
