The thoughts of what I’ll do to Bryan loomed in my mind. I’d only tolerated his nuisances so far because we had been from the same family, and Scarlett hadn’t seemed to cause a major uproar. Except now. He’d done it. Crossed whatever boundary it was that had been set in place for him.
“Ryan?” Scarlett’s shaky voice called out, causing my wolf to purr in relief. Hearing our name on the tip of her tongue like that made my heart swell with satisfaction.
Knowing she’ll be here, home, and safe away from everything else stirs an emotion in me. I’d have it no other way.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered in a shaky voice, stalking closer to me, her huge doe-eyes still rounded up in a pleasing manner. I parted my lips to reassure her, and tell her I’d break Bryan’s bones inch by inch if she needed me to.
Only that my words were cut short. Scarlett wrapped her arms around my neck, her lips pressed instantly into mine. I’d been startled-frozen at first-when her tongue glided over the seam of my lips.
A groan rippled free from my throat as I pressed my arms around her waist, kissing with more fervor. All tongues and teeth. She’d parted her lips, a moan slipping free from her as I guided my tongue through, my body pressed flush against hers.
I pulled away, leaving her to catch her breath as she panted heavily, only for me to yank her by the arm again. Her scent clung to my mind, made my vision blurry, and all I saw was her. And my wolf wanted her. So did I.
“Scarlett…” I asked.
She nodded. Needless to say, nothing else. Tilting her head to grant me access, I brushed my canines along her collarbone beforesinking my fangs deep into her neck, marking her my mate.
Scarlett’S POV
My fingers lingered around the spot Ryan had marked me last night. Each time I circled around it, I shuddered from absolute delight, still high on the buzz of feeling coursing through me.
My senses were heightened. Better. I could see and feel everything, and some of his emotions too. I’d begun feeling them last night. Although I’d tried to block them off, not wanting to tap too much into the mate bond and ruin whatever it was the trust we’d just begun to build.
There had been a different pain in that final minute. I’d never had Bryan mark me. But with Ryan, he didn’t have to say the words. I wanted it. I needed it. I needed him. When I’d been in danger, he’d been the first name to sink across my mind, and instantly I knew it was this man, whom I’d willingly given my life to. Now the mating has been completed.
We hadn’t gone to extreme lengths to sex last night. I’d been too tired after the marking. The energy within me had tripled, but also it had been due to Ryan’s resistance. Perhaps he’d believed I wasn’t interested, nor after that traumatic experience Bryan had dished out to me.
The door creaked open and Ryan stalked in, already fully clothed. As always, a smile spread across my lips as I felt a warm fluttering in my chest. I was happy. But this… this was his happiness. He was happy merely by being here with me.
“Someone’s ready to tend to his pack duties,” I teased, although a little pang in me had me recalling I wouldn’t be a king again, and for a while I’ll be home. But it wasn’t as though I had anything against rotting in bed all day. This was the perk of being the Alpha’s mate and maybe it was time I keyed into that role, focusing more on the pack than some job with an obsessive ex with Stockholm syndrome.
“Not to work baby, we have to go to a party being thrown for Bryan and your stepsister, Maya.” Hearing those words slide off his lips, my blood was quick to turn cold. My gaze widened from shock and sheer disbelief. I didn’t get it… why?
“It’s a tradition. Although things had gone pretty wrong during your dinner, for Bryan he’s the youngest and the immature. And as much as I’d love to gouge out his eyes, which I swear by the moon goddess I would, I’m bound by duties. Just today, for my grandfather. And at least we have to sell out the reform. I’d be a family, a pair of Alphas upholding grace and love,” he explained.
For a moment, silence lingered between us. I had no idea what was expected of me to say, but then I trusted him. Ryan would never put me in harm’s way, and I wasn’t willing to make him sacrifice his family all on my behalf.
“Fine… I’ll meet you right out,” I spoke. He nodded, pressing a chaste kiss on my lips before dragging his gaze from my head to feet and back to my head, a longing gaze evident on his face.
“Ryan?” I called, snapping him out of whatever lusting trance he was. He cleared his throat hastily before stalking out of the bathroom. I took one last glance in the mirror before deciding to bathe and prepare for this… party, thrown by the two people I loathed the most.

I watched as Beta Derek helped Ryan into his wheelchair as we pulled over by the garage to the Hamilton family pack mansion. Unlike Ryan’s home, this seemed to be buzzing. Last I’d come here, it was late into the night, and just like I’d suspected. Ryan must have asked for just a few staff to work that night.
Compared to now: omegas scurrying around, gammas standing on duty, young pups playing around- it made me wonder how hard it must have been for Ryan to keep his ability to walk a secret in a place like this for years.
“Scarlett… It’s fine. I’m here,” Ryan reassured, as though reminding me he was still here with me, and visibly I’d relaxed at his words.
We headed into the house. A smile tilted upon my lips as soon as I’d seen Bryan-his hands wrapped around Maya’s waist-not seeming to look too excited by the situation. But then he’d turned rigid, frowned even, and I’d seen a flash of fear in his eyes as he glanced at me and then to Ryan and then back to the mark on my neck. The fear had quickly toppled into pure rage, consuming him. A small smirk played on my lips.
I ignored his rigid expression, but if anything I could feel Ryan’s anger in waves. He was pissed as hell. I could feel the anger wrapped around my own heart, and I’m stunned to see how calm he looked on the outside.
How often did he mask his emotions to such perfection? If he hadn’t marked me, I would have no idea what he was feeling and why.
“Come now, the story’s started already,” Ryan spoke, flipping my hair away from my shoulders revealing the bite mark to make it even more vivid, earning a smile from me. He was an Alpha. Of course he’d be possessive enough to flaunt his mark and claim on me.
If anything, Bryan had grown even more red at the realization of what Ryan was doing. We rounded towards the table, we’d offered our greetings of course to his grandfather, who still didn’t seem pleased in the bit by whatever it was we were doing at the moment.
Earning a grunt from me, I swallowed thickly at the realization of all this that had been happening, when Bryan had cleared his throat and stood to his feet. A sickening feeling tightened in my guts-something was wrong. Why was he causing a scene? What was he up to?
“I have an important news, especially to you, grandfather,” Bryan spoke, easing off the word slowly, his eyes trailing from mine and slowly back to the previous Alpha of the Newstone pack.
“See, my uncle might be too scared to admit it, but I’m sorry to disappoint-Mrs. Hamilton here had been nothing short of a whore in school. We attended the same school. In fact, she once was my lover. And she had been popular for whoring herself out to men. She is not fit to be a Luna or a mate.”
The screen lit up on cue. Images cropped of me sprawled in bed, the dress I’d worn two years ago, the half-opened clothes, messy hair, smudged lipstick laid evident for everyone to see as loud murmurs erupted around me.
RYAN’S POV
My knuckles hardened against the tyres of my wheel, blaming as anger coursed through me in waves. My eyes darted from the screen displaying lewd images of Scarlett and down to my grandfather’s gaze. It took the old alpha a lot to have him ruffled or get a rise of emotions from him, but this once, his jaws had dropped, his eyes almost bulging out of their sockets.
I grabbed a knife without thinking through, tossed it directly toward the screen. I wasn’t wheel-ridden like everyone believed. I’d spent my spare time from the pack office working out. My throw had been precise, dug straight through the screen and everything went blank, followed by a few sparks of electricity.
Now everyone in the room had gone still and silent.
“What did you do?” my grandfather spoke, his voice raised in a high-pitched tone. I’d felt everyone go even stiller, the hairs on their skin rising at such authority he’d spoken with.
“Blame me?! You stayed away from women for years, I found you a respectable bride, but then you go ahead and bring a whore to be your mate? To this pack?”
A twist snarl eased across my lips hearing the last bit of his words, anger coiling in me in waves at the sudden degrading manner he’d spoken of Scarlett.
Low gasps erupted amongst the crowd, adding to my already booming anger.
“Every single one of you, if I hear a thing about this dinner, a word spoken of this night, a low whistle, a spare glance, or an insult hurled at my mate, I will be sure to break your bones one bit after another, and then start next with gouging out your eyes, myself. Now tell me, is there anyone who has something to say against this?” I questioned.
For a moment they’d all gone still, eyes wandering around, but none daring to remain still on mine.
“Good. We all understand one another. Now, get out!” I ordered curtly. The entire crowd trooped out of the ballroom as though they’d been broken off a trance.
I’d meant every single bit of my words. I’d known the people here: betas, alphas, and gammas of preceding packs and ours, and for their sakes, I hope they’d taken my threat seriously – or it would be at the expense of their life.
“Ryan!” my grandfather’s voice called out, the echo louder than it had first sounded now that we were all together. I swallowed thickly, staring intently at Ryan, who seemed to be too stunned about the situation at hand also.
“You. I warned you, time after number, to stay away from my mate.”
“She isn’t your mate! She’s… she’d…” he stammered, obviously unable to say the words as loud as our grandfather had spoken.
