She turned, startled to see me, her eyes traveled down the length of my body. Her throat was dry, her eyes almost bulging out of their sockets. She wanted me, and I did want her too.

So I’d acted, let my wolf in control as I walked closer to her, wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her closer to me.

“Aloha, Ryan!” she squeaked from surprise, but she wasn’t resisting. Good.

“Are you scared I’ll do something?” I asked in a tease, leaning closer to her, my lips against her ears. I could feel her body thrumming in pleasure… and anxiety, her lips tipping up at the side as she tried to keep up a calm demeanour that most certainly wouldn’t fool me of all people.

“Answer me, are you scared now, Scarlett? I won’t bite you, you know… at least not until you are begging me to.”

I felt her heart lurch in her chest. She dragged out a low sigh past her lips-she wanted me. All of me. And that sounded more alluring to me than anything else possibly could.

I’d taken the moment to drink before placing a soft kiss against her ear and then pulled away from her. Still, I hadn’t unwrapped my arms from her waist.

“You are quitting your job, Scarlett. I don’t want you working there anymore.”

Her gaze widened and whatever moment we had just now, it was broken. Fractured. And tension stilled afresh between us.

“I can’t, Ryan. It’s… it’s… well, it’s complicated. I can’t just leave my job because you want to,” she complained, tugging herself away from my grasp-and I let her. Just because I felt anger flashing in waves within me and I knew if I got too pissed, I might scare her.

“You can’t, or you won’t, Scarlett? Make it straight,” I asked again, trying to keep my irritation out of my tone-only to fail woefully at that.

She must have picked a hint of my sarcasm and bitterness judging by her snicker and eye roll. And if I’d been pissed before, now I was seething.

“I’m Alpha, Scarlett. I have more than enough, and I’m certain I am capable enough of taking care of my mate and her needs. So the only reason you are being stubborn is because of Bryan. Isn’t it?”

“I can’t believe you! What does Bryan have to do with this?!” she asked with a yell. This time, she was fuming. I’d never seen Scarlett this pissed. She’d taken a moment to glare at me.

“I will keep working, Alpha Ryan. I’m certain there are other things you could flaunt your wealth and position as Alpha on,” she mocked, dragging out my ame with malicious intent before storming away on her feet.

BRYAN’S POV

Things hadn’t gotten better with Scarlett, and I’d barely slept a wink all night, from Ryan’s embarrassment and how protective he had been about Scarlett, when she was nothing but a mistress-some wolf who whored herself around. That was who she was. She still kept at it even after those years… selling her body like she didn’t have the slightest worth. She could have turned to me for help. I would have given her anything and anyone. But she’d chosen to be a whore instead.

I grinded my teeth together, irritated at the sudden enclosure of the entire home. It made me sick to my knees. Standing from the floor, I’d walked down the narrow length of the corridor only to see Scarlett scuttling down the halls, heading sharply toward the finance section.

With a glare, I followed behind her, my eyes trailing after gently when she stopped to speak with Zoe.

I watched from afar as she spoke, asking desperately for an advance, which I’d clearly asked that she forget entirely about. She still needed that… but for what? Why?

My lips were pressed into a thin line as I cocked my head sideways, my arms crossed over my shoulders. She hadn’t seen me standing as she begged shamelessly to Zoe. Then she’d turned after Zoe had turned her down, stating she’d always taken an advance and it was impossible this time.

Scarlett made her way out only to be startled seeing me by the door, when a grin split my face into half.

“Isn’t this Scarlett? Begging on her knees for some more money? I could have helped you… how about those old omegas and alphas you whore yourself away to so easily?

They can’t afford your needs anymore?” I asked, uttering with a mischievous glint in my eye just to piss her off all on purpose.

“I can’t do this now, please. I’d like you to leave,” she stuttered, glancing sideways and tried maneuvering her way around me-except I wasn’t having that… not yet.

“Don’t be ashamed. You didn’t mind crawling and groveling to Zoe there right now… I shouldn’t be of any difference to you now… should I? Scarlett?” I asked, trapping her between both sides of my arm placed above her head by the wall.

“I have to leave!”

“To what? Find some other man you would fuck? Some old omega? Or friends of my uncle?”

Hearing me speak of Ryan made her go still, her eyes boring directly into mine when I’d smiled again. That was it. Something that finally got a reaction from her… at least she wasn’t denying that little fact anymore.

“How does it make you feel? Knowing all you do is sell your body? He’s mated… he had a mate and he should be happy instead of hopping around in that wheelchair of his defending the likes of you…”

She parted her lips to speak, but I wasn’t done with my talking yet. I grabbed her jaw forcefully, causing her to wince from pain.

“How about you keep your hands to yourself… and have a little note of self-respect. Matter of fact… I’ll help you. I have an offer to grant you. You need money, don’t you? Fine. How about you sleep with me… for a night… put that body of yours to use… and I’ll give you a sum of ten thousand dollars. After all, you know I can give you just that much and anything more if you want it.” I spoke.

I’d waited for the rush of excitement. For her to take the bait. For her to fall to her knees and show her gratitude. But then-too fast for me to register-

She slapped me.

She struck my face. Silence followed. Time stilled as I glared at her with anger.

“You’ve grown quite the balls, haven’t you? After all, you are slutting your way around with my uncle… a Hamilton. Why wouldn’t you get all full audacity to hit me?” I seethed with a cold and menacing tone.

“You sell me out to Hammerhand. And now this?” she voiced, her voice breaking, and a mist of tears formed in her eyes. She was… hurt? Hurt by my words? But why?…

“I regret loving you. I regret ever having anything to do with you… if I could take things back, Bryan, I would… I’ll have you erased from my life.”

A tear dropped on her cheek as she spoke, and she shoved her way past me. I watched her cry. I watched as she left. And for a moment I waited, hoping I’d get a rise of reaction, I expected happiness, I expected a little bit of joy, of happiness, to feel like I’d finally conquered-but it made me feel bad, sour and bitter.

I didn’t feel good. Matter of fact, it made me feel terrible seeing I’d put her to cry. Begrudgingly, I’d dragged my feet back to Zoe’s office. She had seen me approach with her-

“Mr. Bryan!” she screamed, her lips pressed together with a smile as she’d noticed my presence.

“Right now… Scarlett was here, what’d she say?” I asked Zoe, ignoring her warm greetings.

“She came for an extension… for an advancement, but I hadn’t given it to her, just as you ordered,” Zoe admitted, although there was an edge to her words as though she would have if she’d been given the position to do so.

“And why exactly did she need this… advance for her?” I asked slowly, trying to keep my curiosity out of the conversation.

“Her mother had been in the hospital for a while… she needs it. Although she’d recently gotten married, which had given her an insurance in the new Stone pack, she still had a bit to cover up.”

I’d dropped my head in a nod as I turned away from Zoe. The words… they gutted me. Her mother had been sick? For how long? Had that been why she’d been sleeping around? Why didn’t she ask me?

I balled my fistsat my side before reaching for my phone to send her a text.

RYAN’S POV

The door slammed open and shut with enough force that had me questioning who it was that had stormed uninvited into my house, but then her familiar scent struck, my wolf purring in delight.
