She wasn’t trustworthyShe was a sneaky, vile wolf who broke my heart. And she would do just the same thing to him.

RYAN’S POV

Bryan was up to something, I knew it, and whatever it was, I’d let him play his games to satisfaction. I’d known for a long time he was bound to bring her up to me. All I wanted to see was how he’d handle the matter. After all, we’d been distant from each other ever since the beginning of our lives.

I didn’t know much about the fight that happened between he and Rick, didn’t know why their love fell apart, but I was certain it had something to do with two years ago. Scarlett had been drugged… and someone had taken advantage of her in that situation, paid her off. Somehow Bryan found out and believed she was a whore, selling herself out for money. That had been the end of the research beta Derek made. I’d spoken to him about needing more of the story.

Bryan’s image appeared from the doorstep into the private booth of the restaurant where I was already seated. A smile curved on his lips, but then a mischievous glint remained in his eyes as he sat across from me.

“Well… it’s been long now, you look all grown,” I spoke softly, certain enough to keep my countenance calm and relaxed.

He’d smiled as well with a low laughter before reaching for the menu. We both placed our orders when my eyes had caught a glint of him reaching for something in his pockets and setting what seemed like a little envelope against the table.

“I know about your affair,” he blurted out, earning a raised eyebrow from me as I stared at him in a questioning manner.

“Affair?” I asked, confused at what he meant. He nodded, reaching for the envelope and spreading out some pictures before the table for me to see.

Anger flushed through my arms at the sight of it… It was Scarlett, in bed, her clothes were parted, her hair in a disheveled mess, she was sprawled across a bed looking half-conscious, and instinctively I had gathered the pictures back and turned them face down.

This must’ve been that night from two years ago. She was drugged. And judging from the look on Bryan’s face, he didn’t know… he didn’t believe her. How could he not know her? Or trust her even when they’d been dating for years before it happened?

“I know you are right to be angry,” he began, leaning closer to me against the table as though we were having some sort of conniving to do.

“She’s not trustworthy. She sleeps with you and then other people. She’s been doing this for a long time and I’m worried for you. I do not want this lady ruining everything you worked so hard to build. After all, you are just mated and I’d hate for your mate to misunderstand the situation, won’t we?” he asked again, this time full of smirking as though he had me all cornered and wrapped around his fingers.

I’d kept the shocked look on my face hoping it would fool him for as long as it needed to. He didn’t trust Scarlett. He claimed to be hating her yet it seemed pretty much to me like he wanted me to leave her. Like this was a threat.

Why would he care so much about who she is sleeping with if he hated her and wanted her out of his life? It was obvious he was still hanging on to past feelings and blaming it all on hatred.

“Is that so?” I asked in a low, gravelly, menacing voice as though daring him to go on with whatever illusion he had about making me bow to his request. Only this time, it made him look more pathetic. He had no idea Scarlett was my mate.

“I’m doing this for you. For you to see how shameless she is. How she’ll do anything for money.”

I banged my fists against the table, cutting his words short, earning a grumble from him as his face paled.

The waiter had brought the food now, not daring to glance at either Bryan or me as the tension was thick in the air between us.

“So you think… that’s who she is?” I asked before glancing back at the waiter.

“A lighter,” I asked, and he reached for his pockets before scurrying away on his feet. I lit the pictures on fire, letting them drop into ashes on the table as rage ignited in his eyes watching me with confusion.

“She’s not that type of woman. She is important to me. So you stick your nose out of my affair.”

“What? You do know she sleeps with other people too, not you alone! Do you have any idea she’s stringing you along? She’s-“

“What she does is her business,” I retorted angrily, certainly fed up enough of him and his childlike attitude.

“What I do is my business just as what she does is hers! So do not meddle in it! Stay away from her… and stop this rumor about my affair…” I ordered again when the last edge of the picture had burned down to the table.

“I dated her,” he blurted out, seething with rage, his teeth gritted and his knuckles were pale as he held them against the edge of the table.

“She and I… we were lovers. In the Bluestone pack. That had been where I met her,” he added again as though it was meant to have some sort of leverage on me. Anger coiled in me seeing how desperate Bryan was trying to rip Scarlett and me apart.

How desperate he was, grasping at anything to make me hate her, when he himself couldn’t get over the fact that she was away from him, that she was married, and she wanted nothing to do with him anymore.

“She left me. And she’ll leave you as well. That’s what she does best. So for your own safety, I’d advise you to-“

“Enough of this nonsense!” I blurted out, wheeling myself backwards away from the table.

“What I do, and who I do it with is none of your business. You dated her and you walked away, that’s on you. Now whoever I have an affair with is my business as well. Stay away from her and those pictures. I do not want to hear a word of it ever again. We both know what happened to Gamma Hans… Now, you, my dear nephew, may be from my bloodline, but I remain Alpha.

And I’ll tell you once. Don’t get on her nerves-or mine.”

RYAN’S POV

Anger bubbled in me as Beta Derek drove me back home. How had Bryan gotten his hands on those pictures? What had been his intent when showing those to me? Did Scarlett know he had evidence of her painful past? Who else had he intended to show those to?

Those thoughts made my head drown in a splitting headache. It had my wolf and me on edge, snapping, growls manifesting in a rumble right within our throat.

“I’m going in… you may leave,” I ordered coldly as soon as Beta Derek pulled over by the garage.

“Wait… one more thing,” I spoke, tucking myself into the wheelchair before wheeling closer toward the door.

“The bastard… the man who had touched Scarlett two years ago, I want him alive… and if he’s dead… get his children. His pack member… his mate… I don’t care. But if he isn’t here alive, then bring anyone who would suffer his fate in his place. Let me know as soon as that is done,” I ordered curtly.

Beta Derek had parted his lips to speak, argue, or perhaps ask a question, but had chosen better judgment of keeping his lips sealed shut before he’d nodded.

I wheeled into the house, groaning from displeasure seeing Scarlett hadn’t gotten back from work yet. I’d reached for my phone, sent a quick text to the Thompsons that I wouldn’t be needing their services tonight.

Instead, I’d chosen the perfect moment to take a shower, hoping to get a bath before she returns. Perhaps it was about time we both ended that issue with Bryan-and that job of hers, anyway.

She was my mate. I could easily provide for her, whatever it is she needed. She is mated to a true-blood Alpha of the Hamilton legacy. She would never need to want for anything in her long life.

Except at first, I’d hoped not to sound too hasty and rash-wanting to consider her feelings, her opinions on the entire situation. But now?… I really didn’t give a damn anymore. She was mine, and I’ll make that happen.

My mind had blurred with time, and when I’d pushed open the door to the bedroom, a startled gasp slipped past my lips seeing Scarlett standing by the door. Her eyes locked on mine for a painfully long-

She didn’t move and neither did I.

Sweat crept on her temples, soaking her hair. Our eyes locked… everything stilled, time stopped as our heartbeats increased. And then her eyes dropped, taking me from the very first strand of my hair down to my feet… widening and lingering in certain places longer than they should have, then trailing to my feet and back up.

I cleared my throat, as though reminding her I was still here in person as much as I was in bed. And that seemed to have done the job. Her cheeks heated up immediately, as she turned away from me, her back against me and her face in the direction of the room.

“I’m sorry, I knew you were home but… I… I didn’t… I didn’t expect it to be anything like this here,” she admitted, letting me a few minutes to get all dressed up, earning a grimace from me.

I reached for the towel resting on the edge of the bed, wrapped it low on my torso on purpose before clearing my throat awkwardly.
