Filed to story: A Little Princess's Journey from Darkness to Light Novel
In a moment of panic, she spotted Polly and an idea struck her. She reached into her backpack, took out an amulet, and handed it to Polly to bring over.
Thank goodness Polly didn’t let her down.
Blake held the amulet and slapped it onto the water’s surface.
He had never used a yellow amulet before, so he didn’t know how to use it. It was evident that Polly knocking it above his head was ineffective.
The other way to go was towards the water.
As expected, he was correct. The murky water suddenly became illuminated with green flames as Blake felt the thing that had grabbed his foot release him instantly.
The darkness of the water gradually dissipated, reflecting the lights once again.
Blake took the opportunity to swim back to shore as fast as he could. Just as he reached, he saw the male corpse again.
It appeared as though he had been suspended by an outstretched branch.
He paid no attention to it and immediately returned to shore.
Lilly ran into his arms, embracing Blake tightly as tears glistened in her eyes. “Daddy…”
Blake caressed her head. “I’m fine.”
Today’s events had been very strange, but he had been in many situations that were far more dangerous than this one.
The authorities arrived shortly after, promptly retrieving the male corpse from the water.
The corpse’s face was completely devoid of color, his eyes widened as if his death had been a tragic mistake. It frightened the nearby onlookers.
Blake furrowed his brow. This corpse…
Hadn’t its eyes been rolled back?
Why were they open now…
The rescue boats illuminated the water in the night as they searched and scooped, the passing time weighing heavily.
The middle-aged lady, now restrained, continued to shriek, “My daughter… my daughter…”
Yet after half an hour of searching, nothing seemed to surface. Someone suggested that the girl may have been dragged under the current and sunk to the riverbed.
Either way, it seemed unlikely that she was still alive…
“If that lady hadn’t intervened earlier… her daughter might have been found…”
“Alright, let’s stop discussing it. Losing her daughter is a significant tragedy…”
The middle-aged woman’s chest ached as she listened.
No, how could it have been her fault?
She had simply been anxious. Any mother would have reacted the same in this situation.
She hadn’t asked Blake to save her either. Why hadn’t he saved her daughter first and then come back for her?
The woman was overwhelmed with remorse and guilt, struggling to breathe as she ran towards Blake and began hitting and kicking him:
“Why didn’t you save my daughter first! Why did you rescue a lifeless body! Why did you save me!”
“You’re evil, you should be dead! My daughter is only sixteen, but you didn’t save her! You should be dead!”
The middle-aged lady screamed loudly, directing her anger at Blake.
Lilly clenched her fists. “Unreasonable! Unreasonable! You’re being absolutely ridiculous!”
Her father did not deserve to be blamed!
Lilly couldn’t understand. Her father had tried so hard to save everyone, so why was it his fault now?
Blake gently pushed Lilly behind him, his expression cold.
He could empathize with the pain of losing a daughter – in fact, he would be just as devastated if his dear Lilly was gone.
But understanding was one thing. That didn’t mean he should be blamed for it.
Blake grabbed the woman’s outstretched hand, ready to slap Lilly, and pushed her away. “I won’t hold it against you, considering your daughter is nowhere to be found.”
The woman refused to back down. The man who had helped Bettany look after Lilly shouted, “Are you done causing a scene?”
“Didn’t he go down to try and save everyone? Didn’t he encounter trouble in the water as well?”
“Who do you think you are, asking someone to sacrifice their life for your daughter’s! Is her life somehow more valuable than others’ now?”
The woman bit her lip. So what if it was?
The point was that her daughter was gone now!
“Did I beg him to do it?” The woman shouted, seemingly losing control.
Everyone else didn’t know what to say.
Someone spoke up, “It’s truly unfortunate for your daughter to have a mother like you! No wonder she took her own life.”
“Exactly! Who says that? He jumped in to save your daughter, and you’re still saying all that.”
The woman broke down completely this time, sobbing loudly as she screamed, “What the hell are you talking about! My daughter’s already gone, and you’re speaking of her like this! Did he save her? No, he didn’t! You’re all evil, saying things like this…”
She flailed her arms as she spoke, attempting to hit the crowd.
Polly had had enough. She hid in Lilly’s shoulder, squawking, “You evil woman, fall on that big bottom of yours!”
Just as the words hung in the air, the woman lost her footing and slipped, falling to the ground.
Her head hit the ground hard, bringing her to a kneeling position in front of the person she had just struck.
Both Lilly and Blake were left speechless.
Polly himself was terrified by the sight, scrambling to comfort Lilly immediately.
Blake lifted Lilly up. “Let’s go!”
The authorities had finished taking his statement, and he had also left his contact information with them.
There was no reason to stay here any longer.
Before leaving, Blake cast one last glance at the body lying by the shore.
The tarp covering the face had blown open, revealing a bloated, pale face.
Blake’s heart skipped a beat at the sight –
The man’s pupils were looking at him!
In the water, they had been rolled backwards.
When he reached the shore, they were wide open and staring straight ahead.
And now…
The pupils had somehow flipped over!
Blake was speechless.
