Irene nodded in understanding. “We’ve been trying from every angle, haven’t we, Sir? I can see that we’ve made progress in approaching them, but it seems like we’re stuck.”

“The location seems fine to me,” Irene continued. “But the residents here want a higher price. There are rumors circulating about a proposed construction of a connecting road that would pass through this area, Miss.” Even though Kelvin was much older than Irene, he always addressed her as “Miss” out of courtesy. Initially, she was bothered by it, but over time, she had grown accustomed to it.

“But the plan does exist, right, Sir?” Irene asked curiously. Suddenly, she looked up as a shadow appeared right above her head. “Huh? Sir?”

“You didn’t believe me when I said it was hot, did you, Irene?” Sebastian grumbled. “Well… Just ask Kelvin, then. Keep negotiating with the residents until we reach a deal. I’ve already shared the highest budget we can offer. I want this project to start at the beginning of the year.”

And many other discussions took place between Sebastian and Kelvin. Sebastian’s hand, however, didn’t take turns holding the umbrella, which was mostly aimed toward Irene. The Raptor, or rather Sebastian, her boss, had a kind heart. He was understanding and attentive in his actions. But… He easily led many women into his arms.

Irene? She wasn’t an easy woman.

“Why are you taking so long, Miss?” Bella asked with a pouty face, her hands folded across her chest. Don’t ask what kind of look she was giving Irene. It was as if Irene was being accused of grave wrongdoing by Bella. “I’m working, Bella. Tormented by the ferocious Raptor,” Irene replied.

“Is that true?” Bella’s anger subsided, and she sat down next to Irene. She immediately scrutinized Irene’s body. “There are no injuries, huh.”

Bella’s statement made Irene burst into laughter, even though it caused her stomach to ache. But it resulted in the girl who had been questioning her for the past two days sulking again. “Miss Irene is no fun! Annoying!” “Bella knows who our Raptor is.”

Bella folded her hands across her chest again. “When are we going back to Jakarta?”

“Aren’t you enjoying it here?” Irene took off her glasses, her vision slightly blurred, but she adjusted to it. Her eyes were a bit tired, so she needed to take them off for a moment. She also needed to clean the lenses from dust and dirt that had accumulated, as it obstructed her vision.

“Yeah, I’m bored.” Bella shrugged. “Grandma keeps bothering me about school, my dreams, and my studies. Can’t she ask me something else?”

Irene chuckled. “Grandma is worried about you, Bella. She asks those questions for your own good.”

“I study, you know, Miss.” Bella leaned against Irene’s shoulder. In her current life, Irene’s early arrival when she started working with Daddy was a stroke of luck. It felt like she finally had someone to talk to. Unfortunately, Irene was always busy. Just like Daddy.

“Most importantly, aim for the best grades.” Irene lovingly rubbed Bella’s head. “Can you do that?”

“Of course, I can. I’m naturally smart. I’m just lazy when it comes to studying.” Bella remembered Ena again. She had promised herself not to think about the red-haired woman anymore. But Ena’s face kept haunting her. “Ah, I miss Mommy.”

“We promised not to remember, remember?” Irene briefly tapped the tip of Bella’s cute little nose.

“But it’s called missing, right?” Bella quickly retorted. “I told Grandma, and she got so curious. What’s the big deal if I want Mommy Ena to be with Daddy?”

“It’s not possible, Bella.” Irene laughed. “Mommy Ena is with her own family. Bella and Daddy are different.”

“Is that so?”

Irene could do nothing but rub the top of the twelve-year-old girl’s head again. “Oh… Your birthday is coming up soon, right?”

“Yes,” Bella replied briefly. “I don’t want any celebrations.”

“Why?” Irene was surprised. Almost every year, she was bothered with decorating a birthday party for Jung Bella. Whatever Bella said, Sebastian had to fulfill it. And Irene was the one who was most troubled by it.

“I’m bored,” Bella shrugged. “My prayers haven’t been answered by God.”

“What do you want?” Irene laughed. In her opinion, being Bella was already extremely fortunate. Growing up in an economically privileged class, she could have anything she wanted immediately. She received love, albeit limited, from Sebastian. Although… Irene admitted that losing one’s parents was incomparable to what the girl had since childhood. But at least, Bella didn’t experience the hardships she had. Even now, she still had to struggle to provide for her younger sibling’s education. No, she wasn’t complaining. It was pointless. Because every month, her mother would squeeze her for money. The love she received was limited to payday. Beyond that, she was never asked, not even about trivial matters. There was a desire in her heart to be asked, “Irene, have you eaten? Have you been sleeping enough? Be careful with your work. You’re a woman.”

None. Irene never received that from her mother. Her father? He passed away a long time ago due to a work accident. Realizing her position as the eldest child, she buried many hopes of a bright future for herself to support Bella. Although… Without a word of thanks.

“Can I ask God for a new mommy for my life?” Bella suddenly spoke up.

“There’s no such thing,” Sebastian quickly interjected. “Come on, Irene. I still have a meeting.”

“Are you leaving already?” Bella asked as she got up from her seat. “Daddy just came back, right?”

“Yes, Bella.” Sebastian smiled widely. “Once I finish one more meeting, then we can go home.” “You’re not lying, right?”

“No.” Sebastian chuckled. “Tidy up your clothes, okay? Ask Grandma for help.”

Irene couldn’t object. Even though she was still exhausted. She had planned to use the Sidoarjo trip as an opportunity to take a nap. But no… Boss Sebastian, the all-knowing one, wanted to discuss multiple projects. Usually, he would be on the phone with some woman and talk in a way that annoyed her. Why did that habit suddenly disappear earlier?

“Sir, where is the meeting? It’s almost five o’clock in the evening. How come I didn’t know about it?” Irene questioned.

“It’s with the Grass Media side. How come you didn’t know? Are you my assistant or did you suddenly change positions? We’ll have dinner together. We have a flight to Jakarta tomorrow morning, right?” Irene knew about that, at least.

“Come on, Irene! You’re as slow as a snail!” Sebastian urged.

Sebastian enjoyed his meal leisurely. His favorite was mushroom sauce steak, especially when his hands were smeared with the richly spiced seasoning. And he always ordered an extra two servings of rice. He was accompanied by a small teapot of warm green tea. Well, Sebastian had completely lost track of things. There’s a saying that when you’re enjoying a delicious meal, you forget about your in-laws, and it was true in his case. He couldn’t remember his surroundings. But wait, Sebastian wasn’t married. So there was no way he would remember his in-laws. There was only one person he always remembered: his assistant. “Are you on a diet, Irene?” Sebastian asked casually, while Irene stared at her boss in surprise.

“Do I look like a walking skeleton to be asked about dieting? Can’t you ask something a bit more normal for once?” Irene replied. “Irene,” Sebastian warned.

“I’ve never been happy with diet programs. In fact, I’m thinking of ways to gain weight.” “Pregnancy.”

Choking, Irene! Her nose stung. Her mouth felt the spiciness of the sambal sauce stuck in her throat. Not to mention her eyes watering from the forceful coughing. She quickly grabbed the nearby glass and gulped it down, leaving not a drop. Then… “Sir!” she exclaimed, wide-eyed. She tried to stare fiercely at Sebastian, who furrowed his brow.
