You didn’t tell me the Darkness touched you.
It didn’t.
He did. Even now he left a tiny piece of himself in the back of your mind, siphoning your energy. It is why you feel so tired and confused right now.
How?
I am assuming he made a connection with you much like how I did. Your mind is open to anyone who has the power. You must get to Water. He can cleanse your mind and our children can teach you to keep the darkness out.
How am I supposed to get to Water? I can’t even move!
I will have one of my kin tell you what is going on. I don’t like connecting to one of my siblings’ kin. They always complain I hurt them. I will get someone to guide them and the other newly Chosen to the hidden gate to Water. Be well Young Mother.
Fire left her, and Araiya was able to crack her eyes open. She couldn’t move anything else or talk. She was frozen in her body again. Shavon was next to her, Amara and Roky were glancing between her, and the Chosen collected outside her open door. They were discussing what to do, while Talon looked down at Araiya with worry.
“Move out of the way,” a beautiful female dragon called through the crowd at the door. She pushed past the Chosen and made her way into the room. “Young Mother, my name is Ember.” Ember bowed her head in Araiya’s direction.
“‘Young Mother’?” Shavon asked.
“It’s what the Fire Bearer calls this Chosen. She sent me here to explain what is going on with the Young Mother and guide you and the other Chosen out of Fire.”
“What is going on?” Amara stepped toward Ember. “We were woken up by the activity, but no one has explained why everyone is moving.”
“The Fire Bearer felt someone testing the boundary to the volcano early this morning. The Darkness has come for the young mother. He planted a tiny part of his power before she entered the gate yesterday, draining her strength ever since. We have to get her to Water and his center before anyone else. She needs to be cleansed, and then trained. We need to move.” Ember walked over to Talon and Araiya. “I was told to protect her with my life. Let me take her from you Air. Take care of your mate. This might not be an easy escape.”
“Yes, Talon, hand over Araiya, and we can watch over each other, like mates are supposed to do.” Shavon elbowed him. Talon glanced at Araiya and handed her over to Ember.
“Let’s go.” Ember took off in a jog and everyone started jogging away.
Before Shavon could leave, Talon put his arm stopping her. He turned to Shavon. “What the hell is wrong with you? I am mated to you. Dragons are faithful to their mates. The attitude to our friend is honestly becoming frustrating, again. I am done with this bullshit.” Talon turned away and everyone filed out of the room leaving Shavon to process what her mate had said.
Ember jogged the entire way to the center, urged on by the Fire elemental. The urgency of the situation had become dire. “I do not mean to scare you, but we must hurry.”
“What’s going on?” someone called.
“The darkness has found a weakened gate and is started to unravel the barrier. Everyone needs to be gone by that time. The rest of Fire is leaving through the gates to the Chosen village and other elements. The Fire Bearer has instructed that the Water gate be left clear for you.”
“If the Darkness is after Araiya, just give her up. Why is her life worth jeopardizing everyone else?” someone from the very back asked. Araiya actually agreed, but it still stung hearing that from someone.
Ember stopped and turned. “The Young Mother is the ONLY reason the Fire Bearer is helping you. None of you mated her kin. None of you are gifted enough to connect to her. She has no alliance with you. Araiya is the only reason you Chosen are even making it out of the volcano alive. She’s the only reason the dragons who reside here will fight tooth and nail to keep you lot alive. I would remember that before you call out any more bullshit. Otherwise, I will leave you here to be embraced by the Darkness while the rest escape,” Ember snarled and then started running. “We are almost there, but the gate has been breached.”
The group raced down the volcano’s throat and into the central vent where the elemental resided. Ember broke off from the main vent and shot downward in a spiral. They got to the Water gate, and Ember stopped. Her eyes widened, and her body trembled. “The darkness has breached Fire’s center. You must go, GO NOW.” Everyone started jumping through one at a time. Finally, it was just the final few when there was a loud boom, and Ember dropped.
“Ember, what’s going on?” Araiya tried.
“The Fire Bearer, she had to take back all of her power. She is holding off the darkness for us.”
Everyone else was through at this point except for her closest friends. “Amara, please get yourself and Roky to safety. You and Shavon too Talon. I will be right behind you with Ember.” Araiya started to feel stronger. She was no longer frozen or tired. Her head finally cleared.
“Are you able to move now that we are close to safety?” Shavon snarled.
“Yes, and I think it is because the Darkness is busy fighting the full power of the elemental fire,” Araiya shot back.
Shavon’s eyes widened and she mumbled an apology. Amara and Roky had already gone through the gate. Shavon stepped through next. Talon was about to step through when both Ember and Araiya screamed and dropped.
“Araiya what is it? What is going on?” Talon rushed over.
“Talon, push Ember through the gate. Now Talon. I won’t leave her here to die.” Araiya weakly pushed him over to the passed-out dragon. He picked her up and gently pushed her through the gate.
He came back and picked up Araiya. “This is going to hurt again, but we don’t have any choice.” Talon got right up to the gate and was going to step through when Araiya screamed again. “Araiya talk to me.”
Young Mother. I am sorry I tried my best to keep him from you and let you escape.
It’s okay Firwyn. You did great, everyone else is out.
“Talon, wait. The Fire element, something is wrong.”
