She cried out, the heat getting more intense. Sweat was pooling around her feet.

Tell me what I have to do.

I cannot. Just focus on the fire. You will know.

You said you would help me!

I cannot save you from this test. You have to pass on your own.

She felt the Earth elemental leave her with a boost of confidence. Earth believed she could do this, so maybe she could. She focused on her breathing and how the heat made her sweat. She let her body relax into the stone and felt the heat press against her. She focused on the heat and how it could be powerful or gentle. How a flame can take a life or save a life. A fire can burn down a home, or it can save a person in the cold. The sun brought power to the world. Light to see and grow-heat to protect the plants and bring warmth on a cold day.

Fire was just like any element. They each had two sides; destructive and nurturing. Araiya took the heat pressing against her skin, took the power trying to harm, and redirected it to be nurturing. Burning hot became a gentle warmth to snuggle into. The flames set alight to burn the world, turned inward to keep the lava rock a light to see by. The fire ring used to keep out everyone else extinguished to open a path to her friends. The platform went from dangerous and destructive to cozy and inviting.

Araiya stepped back and dropped to her knees. She was absolutely exhausted, but she needed to make sure that her hands were in fact whole. Everyone rushed over to her, and Talon picked her up.

“Talon, seriously, what is up with you. Araiya, are you okay?” Shavon asked.

“Talon, you can put me down. It was just a test. I survived, but I am so tired.”

Young Mother, you survived.

Yes. I survived.

I guess you do live up to what my sister and brother have told us. I wasn’t as trusting of their opinion as Water seems to be.

How did I do that?

Do what?

Pass the test. We aren’t supposed to have any powers until we mate a dragon, and as far as I have been told I will never have a true mate bond.

Who told you that?

The Chosen back at the village. After the ritual.

Well forgive them. They know nothing about how you will develop.

What?

You aren’t like the rest of the Chosen. The Chosen from our elements follow the standard Chosen rules. Find a mate, gifted youth and powers to keep darkness at bay. You are the Chosen of the Goddess herself. Your element is her power, which you were gifted the night you were Chosen. You still have a lot to learn. Just know you do not need a mate to be blessed.

What do you mean?

You will find out but take my blessing and go rest. I can feel how tired you are in your very soul. Your dragon protector is very on edge for just being tapped.

Dragon protector?

Ask the Enforcers who a protector is, and they will explain. Blessed be, Young Mother. Be strong in life as you are in heart.

Wait. You didn’t tell me your name.

Firwyn, the Goddess blessed me as Firwyn. Rest Araiya. You are safe here, and none here are your mates.

Mates……as in more than one?

With a departing chuckle the Fire elemental withdrew from her mind and Araiya noticed that everyone was looking at her. She was still being held by Talon with Shavon next to him.

“Talon, please put me down. I am okay. I passed the test. Firwyn gave me her blessing, and she saved me from dealing with the rest of the night. No one here is my mate. I just want to rest.”

“Wait she said no one here was your mate. That’s close to breaking the mate rule, isn’t it?” Shavon turned to Amara.

“Actually, her cryptic message was none here are your mates.”

“Mates… as in more than one?” Talon asked.

“Who can someone of Spirit mate with? There aren’t any Spirit dragons. She shouldn’t have any mates, never mind more than one,” Shavon spat back.
