“That’s not true. I-I don’t consider myself anything special.”
Rowan frowned. “Why not? You’re about to be Luna of our pack. You are very special, Lia. As special as Zane is.”
I glanced at him. “I could never be as special as him.”
“Don’t say that,” Zane frowned.
“Yes, please don’t. He’s gonna start thinking he’s too incredible, just like his father. It gets annoying after a while,” Arcilla said.
As the lunch went on, the conversation flowed easily. Arielle asked about my parents, and I told her a bit. She didn’t pry. Rowan asked about school, and I answered between bites of pasta. They both shared more stories about Zane’s childhood-how he once shifted into a wolf too soon and got stuck halfway, how he cried the first time he saw snow, and how he thought he could marry the moon one day.
“Explains a lot,” I muttered, and Zane chuckled.
Later, we moved to the living room. Zane sat beside me, his fingers laced through mine, his thumb tracing lazy circles over the back of my hand. His parents watched us quietly, a soft look in both their eyes.
“You know,” Arielle said, “Zane used to be… closed off. Distant. Not because he was cold, but because he felt everything too deeply. It scared him.”
I looked at him, but he didn’t say anything.
“I’ve never seen him this open,” she continued. “Not even with us. So thank you, Lia.”
I blinked, a little stunned. “I didn’t do anything.”
“Yes, you did,” Rowan said. “You made him happy.”
Zane shifted beside me, leaning into me a little more. His hand squeezed mine, just once.
I smiled. “Well… he makes me happy too.”
Arielle beamed. “Then we’re even.”
For a while, we sat in comfortable silence. The kind that only existed between people who have known each other for years. The sun filtered in through the windows, casting golden patterns on the floor, and I leaned my head on Zane’s shoulder, closing my eyes for a moment.
When I opened them, Arielle was watching me with a gentle smile.
“We’re glad you’re here, Lia,” she said. “Really.”
I nodded, swallowing past the lump in my throat. “Me too.”
Zane kissed the top of my head.
“I think we should get back to school now,” he said softly.
“Oh, yeah. School.” I nodded, sitting up straight.
“Do visit us again, both of you. We had a lot of fun,” Arielle said.
“We definitely will,” I promised as we both stood up.
His parents approached us, taking turns to hug us.
“See you guys soon. Thank you so much for having us,” I said, before we made our way to the door.
“It was our pleasure, honey. Take care.”
“You too,” I smiled, stepping out of the mansion.
-LIA’S POV-
“I hope you liked them and had fun,” Zane said as we returned to school.
“Are you kidding?” I asked. “They’re amazing, Zane. I loved them. Your mom looks just like you. And your dad has the same personality. It was like seeing you divided into two.”
Zane smiled, parking the car in his designated spot. “I’m glad,” he said, turning to me. “You’re the most important person in the world to me. I really wanted you to get along with them.”
“I do,” I promised. “Honestly, I hadn’t expected to feel so comfortable with them, but they welcomed me like I’m already family.”
“You are, my love.”
I smiled. “Thank you, Zane. For giving me so much importance.”
He scoffed. “Shut up.”
I laughed as we stepped out of the car. The breeze had picked. up, tugging my hair from behind my ears. Zane reached over and fixed it for me without a word, then grabbed my hand.
“No, seriously, thank you,” I said. “That was really special.”
Zane squeezed my hand. “I wanted you to know that there are people who care about you just as much as I do.”
I smiled and bumped my shoulder lightly into his. “They were perfect. And now I know where you get your chaotic charm. from.”
Zane smirked. “You think I’m charming?”
“Unfortunately.”
He grinned and leaned in. “Careful, love. You keep saying sweet things like that and I might forget we’re supposed to go back to class.”
I rolled my eyes, gently tugging him toward the building. “Comet on, Alpha. Back to reality.”
The halls had mostly cleared, the buzz of lunch hour replaced by the quiet lull of afternoon classes. I held on to Zane’s arm as we walked, more out of habit than anything else. My thoughts. drifted from the lunch, now returning to Blake again. Zane had said he would check up on him, but he hadn’t gotten a chance. yet.
Blake hadn’t looked good for a werewolf. It didn’t make sense. for him to still be injured like that.
It didn’t sit right with me.
“Zane,” I said as we approached our classroom, slowing my steps. “Can we check on Blake?”
He blinked, caught off guard. “Right now?”
“I mean, yeah. He still looked bad, and you said his injuries. should’ve healed by now.”
Zane let out a small sigh and nodded. “Alright. You’re right. But he is probably in class.”
“Let’s check. If he isn’t, then we find him. Otherwise, we wait until school ends.”
“Okay. Whatever you say, my love.”
We got to class, and thankfully, Blake was in there. He still had his head down, and when I passed by him, his scent. seemed different. Zane and I exchanged a glance, but didn’t say anything, quietly getting through class. When the bell rang, Blake got up to leave, but Zane was quick to stop him.
“Wait,” he said. “We need to talk to you.”
Blake frowned, glancing from Zane to me.
“About what?”
“Let’s go somewhere emptier.”
We made our way toward the far side of the building, which was usually mostly secluded, and found ourselves benches.
Once we sat down, Zane cleared his throat.
Blake looked up slowly, his green eyes duller than usual, his expression full of concern. “Is everything alright?” he asked. “Is she in trouble?”
“No, no, everything’s fine on our end,” I replied, frowning.
“Then? What is it?” Blake asked.
“You still look hurt,” Zane said. “Why aren’t you healing?”
Blake was quiet for a moment, then leaned forward, resting hist elbows on his knees. “It’s nothing serious. Just… annoying.”
“What happened that night after we left?” I asked.
“Nothing much,” Blake tried to wave off.
“Please. The truth, Blake,” I insisted.
He sighed. “I took a lot of bullets. Some of them were silver. It screwed up my body. Then there was a rogue wolf. It bit me.”
Zane raised a brow. “You call all that nothing?”
Blake laughed. “Am I supposed to worry you guys?”
“What makes you think we’ll worry about you?” Zane retorted.
“Zane…” I muttered.
