Oh God, his smile was just like Zane’s. I immediately felt like I’d known him forever.

“You must be Lia,” he said, standing and walking over.

“Hello, Mr. Adams.”

“Oh, none of that,” he said, waving a hand before pulling me into a surprising hug. “I’m Rowan. Welcome to our home.”

I blinked up at him, a smile stretching over my lips. “Thank you.”

Zane leaned in. “Told you. No sniffing, no growling, no threats.

You’re in.”

I bit my lip to prevent myself from laughing out loud.

Idiot.

We sat at the table, and almost instantly, Arielle began bringing out dishes. There was grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, garlic. rice, something that looked like pasta but smelled spicier, and cookies. Huge, soft, golden ones, with chocolate chips that made my stomach grumble.

“Am I being bribed?” I asked, staring at the cookies.

“Yes,” Arielle said seriously. “You’re our son’s mate. We want you to like us.”

I let out a laugh, glancing at Zane who just looked smug. “I do, I promise. Even without the cookies.”

“You’ll like me more after you try one. They’re chocolate chip,” she added, sitting beside her husband. onc,

“Then I shouldn’t make them wait.” I reached out for bit into it at once, almost moaning when the taste filled my and mouth. “Wow,” I whispered with my mouth full. “Sorry, I know it’s bad manners to talk while chewing, but they’re delicious.”

Zane chuckled and ruffled my hair, while his parents simply smiled at me.

“You two are adorable,” Arielle said, staring at us lovingly.

“Not more than us,” Rowan commented, putting his arm around his wife.

As I watched them interact, with the heavenly cookies melting in my mouth, I felt like they were a window into our future-Zane’s and mine.

“Our time has passed, we’re old now. It’s their time,” Arielle replied, smiling.

“How dare you?” Rowan whispered. “It will always be our time, you understand?”

He pulled her closer to himself, and she chuckled, blushing.

I glanced at Zane, who was staring at me with a grin.

“Your parents are cuter than mine,” I whispered to him.

“They’re just werewolves in love. Your parents are really cute for humans.”

I laughed. “That’s fair, I guess.”

He leaned in and kissed my hair. “You like them?”

“I love them. They’re your parents, Zane.”

“No, I hoped you’d like them. Actually enjoy their company.”

“I do,” I promised.

“I’m glad,” he replied.

“Who would have thought,” Rowan said loudly, gaining our attention, “that the little girl with glasses and the same birthday as this boy would turn out to be his mate?”

I smiled sheepishly. “I didn’t, for sure.”

“Of course you didn’t. You’re human, honey,” Arielle said. “But he should have had an idea.”

Zane’s eyes widened. “How could I know? You don’t recognise your mate until you’re sixteen.”

“Still,” Rowan said, shaking his head. “There were signs, I’m sure. You were just too blind to see it.”

“Yeah,” I said in agreement, “even though I’m the one who wore glasses.”

“That’s right,” Ariella nodded.

Zane frowned. “Wait, what’s going on here? Why am I being targetted like this?”

“Because you’re dumb, sweetheart,” Arielle replied.

I pursed my lips to suppress my amused smile.

“Lia, do you know how he reacted when he smelled you?”

Rowan asked.

-LIA’S POV-

“Smelled me?” I muttered, my cheeks flaming.

“I mean when he turned sixteen and felt drawn to you for the first time.”

“I think I have an idea,” I laughed.

“The way he ran,” Rowan said dramatically.

“Ran?” I grinned.

“Yes. He shifted and ran out like he would attack you when he’d see you. We were downright worried for you.”

Zane rolled his eyes. “It wasn’t like that.”

“It was,” Rowan said. “And then he came back in shock. He was dazed.”

“Yeah, so dazed,” Arielle agreed.

My cheeks were hurting by now, from smiling too hard.

Rowan chuckled. “We were actually concerned that something was wrong. But nope. Just puberty, hormones, and a soul bond with the girl he bullied.”

“It was shocking!” Zane defended.

“Because you were an idiot your whole life.”

Zane covered his face. “I hate you both.”

Rowan only laughed harder. “You’re lucky your mom stopped me from filming that. It was gold.”

“We should get back to school,” Zane said flatly, starting to get up.

I leaned against him, grabbing his arm tightly. “This is the best day of my life.”

He groaned.

“So,” Arielle said, changing the subject. “Tell us about yourself, Lia. What do you like? What don’t you like? What do your parents do? Did you tell them about us yet?”

“They know about Zane and I dating, but not about everything else. I intend to keep it that way as long as I can. They already had a lot of trouble processing that I’m dating him.”

Zane snorted.

“That’s understandable,” Arielle nodded.

“More about yourself, honey. What makes you smile except this. idiot?”

“Nothing,” Zane cut in, nudging me with his elbow. “Only me.”

I swatted his arm. “Okay, fine. Yes. But also, I like coding, even though I haven’t touched a keyboard in months now. I like rainy days. I like burgers. I surprisingly like the Hounds, and my best friend Christy.”

“You like the Hounds?” Rowan asked, surprised. “Didn’t they lock you inside a locker once?”

Zane’s eyes widened. “How do you know about that?”

“I may not be Alpha anymore, son, but I know everything that goes on,” he said proudly.

“The Hounds… are an acquired taste. I like them. They’re fun to be around once you get on their good side.”

Arielle laughed. “You’re not on their side. You’re above.”
