(Scarlett)

My heart raced against my ribcage as I took sight of all the blood that was in front of me.

The fact that I came here to get my daughter to find that the room was empty of her presence was something that scared me more than anything ever has. Her nurses’ blood was the first thing that hit my nostrils as I walked up to her room, but I had hoped that it was Vladimir’s blood which was still on my shirt.

The sight of them dead in front of me had me fighting back scream of terror and despite knowing that it wouldn’t be Vladimir, I hoped that it was. At least, I knew that my daughter was unharmed, I couldn’t smell any blood from hers, and I knew that I would have been able to persuade the Alpha into giving her back to us.

However, I knew that it was stupid enough to think that way. The man was not going to have us here only for him to kidnap my child.

Regardless of the issues, I didn’t want to think that he would let my daughter into this.

Alexander, Vladimir, and I entered the room as I shook my head at the sight. The nurses were laying on the ground with blood surrounding them as it poured from their n*ecks. They had been slaughtered, and it was obvious that they tried running away. The thing was, I didn’t even know who or how they managed to get inside without being felt. But if I put it somehow, the pack members were also outside with their scents masked. That could have been the same method, and that fact alone was alarming to me.

I had to grip the bedside table as I tried stabilizing myself, wanting to take a deep breath as I processed everything that was going on, wanting to let my pain go right now. The fact that I was standing was enough for me to begin with. And I didn’t even know how things were going to work out at this point. To me, right now, all that mattered was for me to get my daughter back and safely. I didn’t want her being hurt or scared, and the fact that I didn’t even know when she was taken was a whole different thing to worry about. “Check the perimeter. Their blood is fresh, and that means that Anastasia is still around.” Vladimir said, looking over his shoulder.

“Make sure to lock all the gates, no one gets in or leaves the Estate until we have found the child.”

“Who did this?” I asked, looking at the Alpha who turned his attention to me. He looked at Alexander who was quiet, trying to process what was going on before taking a step toward me and slowly taking my hands in his. “And what would they want with my daughter? She is just a baby…”

“I don’t know, Scarlett. But one thing is for sure, you are under my safety, and I am going to ensure that your daughter is back safe, in your arms, before this night ends.” He said, keeping his eyes on mine before he let my hands go. He wiped his blood from his nose using his right sleeve before picking up a napkin to stop it. “You just have to stay calm. You are not going to benefit your child if you’re scared or worried right now.

He looked at Alexander and nodded at him before taking a step back and walking out of the room, leaving my husband and I alone with the corpses of the nurses that were in the room.

The smell of their blood would have normally made my wolf nervous, but at this point, she was more worried about our baby as she fought the whimper that almost escaped her at the sight of Alexander.

Both her and I were embarrassed of what happened, and that was something that even Alexander knew very well. I, as her mother, was supposed to protect her, and yet, I couldn’t do so. It was a small and simple task that I couldn’t do.

I sat on the chair that was beside her bed, taking a deep breath as I tried calming myself down. I knew that I shouldn’t have left her unattended. At least, I would have been able to fight to protect her. I wouldn’t have let anyone lay a finger on her.

Alexander got on his knees in front of me, and took both my bloodied hands in his before wiping them with a wet cloth. My heart raced, and I closed my eyes to stop myself from crying. My insecurities rose more than ever, especially remembering the words that broke my heart when I failed to protect my own child while she was in my stomach.

“I am a failure as a mother, Alexander.” I said, taking my husband off guard. Alexander used to tell me that when I first gave birth, but never did I feel it as much as I did now. And that alone broke my heart. “I couldn’t keep her safe when she was inside me and almost lost her, I couldn’t take care of her when I first gave birth, and now…”

“You are not a failure, Scar.” Alexander said, his tone softening. He kept his eyes on mine as he spoke before squeezing my hand gently. “If anything, you have fought more battles than I ever could have. And needless to say, you came out as victorious through them all.”

“I know that it might not make any sense to you right now, but you have gone through more than anyone should go through, and never, not once did you back down or flinch. You stood strong through all the struggles, and always came out with a beautiful smile on your face.” He said, his tone softening. “I have hurt you more than ever, and if anyone was the bad parent, it is me, and will never be you.”

I opened my mouth to respond before Alpha Vladimir walked inside with a napkin on his nose. He threw his gun at Alexander and I frowned in confusion as the two of us got up. “You, stay here, Scarlett. And you, Alexander, we have visitors, and they’re not your pack members.”
