They looked like they were discussing something important, something they didn’t want others to hear. Which meant it was definitely werewolf-related.

Zane’s gaze landed on them, and I felt his fingers twitch like he wanted to join them. I nodded at him before he could ask. “Go. I’ll catch up later.”

“What about you? You can come too.”

“I’ve to find Chris,” I replied, looking around. I spotted her near her locker, minding her own business. She was handling the truth better than I was, because at least she was here, unlike me who had hid inside my house for days. But I had to still meet her, make sure she was doing fine.

“You sure?” Zane asked.

“Positive,” I replied.

I made my way to her, while Zane disappeared from my side and moved towards the Hounds.

“Hey,” I said softly as I approached.

She looked up, startled. She relaxed a little when she saw me.

“Lia.”

“You okay?”

She let out a breath, nodding. I heard her heart thump in her chest.

“Yes. I’m fine, considering. Just a little jumpy.”

I leaned against the locker beside hers, arms crossed. “Wanna talk about it?”

She pursed her lips, shrugging. “I don’t really know what to say, honestly.” She glanced at the Hounds after shutting her locker and shifting closer to me. “They look so normal right now. Like they could be anyone.”

I followed her gaze. Aaron had his hand on Sheila’s shoulder while she spoke, Warner standing behind her with his arms folded. Ajax was fidgeting with a soda can, his jaw tight. From this distance, it was impossible to tell they weren’t just regular teens. Not killers. Not monsters. Not werewolves.

-LIA’S POV-

“Yeah,” I said. “They do that.”

“How are they all related?” she asked. “Are they like family?”

“You could say that.” I nodded. “Sheila and Aaron are mates. Ajax and Warner are twins. They’re all part of the same pack. Zane’s their Alpha, while Aaron is the Beta. There’s a lot more people in his pack, but the Hounds are the closest to him.”

She blew out a breath. “Are they dangerous?”

I gave her a tiny smile. “Kind of. But it’s not like they’re evil or anything. I mean, they’re dangerous when they need to be. But they’re good people.”

Christy stared at me for a second. “Lia, I saw Aaron’s eyes go completely black.”

“I know,” I said gently. “That happens when they get mad or triggered. But he wasn’t going to hurt you.”

“He was protecting me,” she said, nodding. “But it was scary all the same.”

I reached out and squeezed her arm. “I get it. It is frightening. I’m still scared too sometimes.”

Her shoulders slumped a little, like my words gave her permission to breathe. “It just changes how you see everything. People. Places. The world. Like, I’ve been going to school with werewolves.”

I smiled again. “Same.”

“I’m trying not to freak out,” she admitted. “But I keep thinking about that moment. His face. His eyes. I’ve never seen someone look so inhuman before.”

I nodded. “It takes time. Just… don’t make any rash judgments, okay? Aaron’s not a bad person. He’s not a monster. None of them are.

Christy was quiet for a second. Then she gave a small nod. “I know.”

We stood there in silence, both watching the Hounds. Zane had now joined them. He’d slid effortlessly into the group, saying something to Ajax, who nodded. Warner glanced back at me briefly, then returned to the conversation. I wondered what they were talking about. Probably about The Order, or the pack. Or

Blake.

My heart twitched slightly at the thought of him.

I looked away, only to freeze when I spotted him.

Blake was walking slowly through the corridor, keeping to the edge of the hallway like he didn’t want to be seen. His head was lowered, and he wore a dark hoodie, hood down. His left arm was in a sling, thick white bandages visible under his sleeve. He looked like he hadn’t slept at all.

My chest tightened a little, eyes widening.

He was here. He was alive. Not captured, not dead. Relief flooded through me.

But… why was he hurt? Was this for show? But who would he be putting it up for?

He had saved me and Zane last night. Zane probably would have managed without him too, but Blake had thrown himself into danger for us. No one else had seen it. He had looked like he actually cared… about me.

Christy and the Hounds hadn’t noticed him yet. I glanced at Zane, and then back at him. I wanted to approach him, to ask if he was okay. To ask what happened after we left. But I knew Zane wouldn’t like it.

And I couldn’t let my guard down like this. I couldn’t forget what Blake had done, not just yet. Overlooking that completely would be stupid.

Blake didn’t look my way. Didn’t acknowledge anyone. His face was unreadable, cold, withdrawn. He moved like a ghost in the hallway, like someone who didn’t belong here anymore. And maybe never had.

But the sight of his injury made something twist in my stomach.

He could’ve died. Because of me.

He passed by a couple of students. One of them bumped into his shoulder without realizing it, and he flinched, holding onto his bandaged arm. My lips parted, concern leaking into me before I could stop it.

I didn’t love him. I never did. I only ever loved Zane. But still…

“Is that…?” Christy’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. She’d finally noticed Blake.

I hesitated. “Yeah.”

“What happened to him?” She studied him with wide eyes. “He looks like a wreck.”

I didn’t respond.

Because he did.

He looked like he was falling apart.

Blake didn’t see us. Or maybe he did, and just chose not to react. He walked past the lockers and disappeared down the side hallway, shoulders hunched.

I bit my lip.

“I thought werewolves healed fast?” Christy said.

“I did too.”

She stared at me. “What happened to him?”

I looked at her. “He was there last night,” I explained. “He helped Zane and I escape.”

Her eyes widened. “I thought he was a piece of shit.”

I didn’t say anything else. Just leaned against the lockers again and exhaled.

I felt Zane’s gaze on me now, and met it. His eyes weren’t angry. Just calm. Understanding. He knew what I was thinking.

The bell rang, making me flinch. It was a sharp reminder to return to routine. To get to class, to focus on things other than the supernatural. But it didn’t really work.

Christy pushed away from the lockers just as the Hounds started to split up.

“I’ll see you in class,” I told her.

“Oka

-LIA’S POV-

Zane walked up to me, his expression unreadable.

“Did you see that?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he replied, putting his hand on my waist. “Don’t worry, I’ll check up on him.”

My eyebrows shot up. “You will?”

“Of course,” he replied. “He looked injured.”

“Don’t you hate him?” I asked.

Zane glanced at me, narrowing his eyes. “I do. But that doesn’t mean I will forget what he did last night.”
