“Some other time. It’s a school night.”

‘Since when do you care about that?” she teased.

“Since I started caring about you. Quiet now, close your eyes. Go to sleep. We have to find Blake too tomorrow.”

“Right,” she sighed, moving closer to me. “Good night, Zane.”

“Good night, Lia.”

I held her to myself, and she fell asleep within minutes.

I stared at her, resisting the urge to litter her face with kisses. She needed her sleep. It was a wonder she could still be this relaxed.

After everything that had happened in her life in the last few months, every single day I feared that she would finally break. That she would tell me that she doesn’t want me anymore. That she’d beg me to leave her alone.

And if she did, I had no idea what I’d tell her.

In the beginning, when I first recognised her as my mate, I’d promised myself I wouldn’t act like an entitled piece of shit like a few others. That I would leave her alone if she truly seemed like she’d be better off that way.

But now, after I’d spent so much time getting to know her, after she’d started to mean more to me than just a ‘mate’ the Moon. Goddess had chosen for me, I think I would act the same way other werewolves with reluctant human males did.

I wouldn’t let her go anymore. If I had to, I would follow her to the ends of the earth.

But Lia Snow was mine now.

Mine, and no one else’s.

I pushed her hair away from her face, keeping my touch as gentle as I possibly could.

My thumb traced over her cheek, and those familiar sparks shot up my hand.

These tingles had changed too. In the beginning, it was all excitement and thrill and passion.

Now, she simply felt like peace. Like true bliss. Calm, tranquil, habitual.

“Zane…” she mumbled in her sleep, stirring.

I touched my cheek to hers. “I’m here, love. I’m right here.”

She shifted her position, nuzzling closer into me.

“Don’t leave me,” she whispered.

“I won’t. Never.”

She opened her eyes and glanced at me.

“Hey,” I smiled, brushing her hair away from her face. “Go back to sleep.”

“I would,” she said, “but I’m scared.”

“Why? I’m right here, baby. There’s nothing to worry about. I won’t let them hurt you.”

She shook her head. “I’m not afraid of The order or anyone else.”

“Then?”

“I’m afraid of my nightmares. They make me feel like my life is about to change completely.”

I leaned in and kissed her forehead, then her nose, then her lips. She kissed me back gently, fingers gripping onto my shirt. I pulled away and cupped her cheek. “No matter what changes, my love, I promise you, I will always be by your side. I will always remain your anchor, a constant source of love and support for you.”

She leaned into my touch, holding onto my wrist with both her hands.

“Help me find out, Zane,” she said. “I wanna know what I am. What my actual connection is to your world. Why I have two mates, why I ended up in the jungle that night. I don’t like this uncertainty.”

“I’m trying,” I nodded, “I’m looking into it.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Now go back to sleep, you need it. You lost a lot of blood today. Even if you’re healing quickly, we cannot put your body through trials like this. You’re still adjusting to this new life and we don’t even know what it is.”

“Okay,” she replied, closing her eyes.

“Good girl. Sleep well, love. I’m right here.”

“I know.”

After a few seconds of silence, she drifted off again, her heartbeat becoming rhythmic and her breath steadying.

I sighed, glancing out the window, at the crescent shining in the sky.

Help me, Goddess. Help me understand, so I can help her.

-LIA’S POV-

The morning air felt refreshing.

I woke up beside my handsome mate just like every other day, but today it was at his house. In spite of everything that had happened the previous day, I couldn’t help but smile. The night we had spent together was pretty romantic. My heart still skipped a beat when I thought about it.

“Zane,” I said softly, gently running my hand down his cheek.

He immediately stirred, instinctively leaning into my touch, eyes still closed. “Hmm?”

“Wake up,” I said quietly. “We have school, my love.”

Zane rolled on his side, then opened his eyes only slightly. “Hi,” he grinned. “You’re pretty.”

I laughed, heat rising to my cheeks. “I’m sure I look like a homeless druggie right now.”

Zane scowled, reaching out and grabbing my chin, pulling me closer to himself. “Don’t you dare.”

“Don’t I dare what?”

“Say that about the love of my life.”

I grinned, snorting. “Idiot. Wake up. We’re late for school.”

Zane groaned, letting go of my face with a deep frown. He rolled onto his back now, staring up at the ceiling.

“Do we have to go?” He pouted like a child.

“Yes, we do. It’s unfortunate, I know. But I’ve missed enough.”

He blinked a couple of times, his hesitation clear. Then finally, he huffed. “Okay. You get ready. I’ll do the same.”

Zane pulled into the school parking lot and cut the engine. I was still holding his hand, fingers curled loosely in his, not wanting to let go just yet.

“Ready to face the circus?” he asked, glancing sideways at me.

I smiled. “Not really. But I’ll pretend I am.”

“You don’t have to pretend,” he murmured, brushing his thumb over my knuckles. “I’ll be here all day. Watching you. Protecting you.”

“I know. You’ve been doing that for months now.”

Amusement glinted in his eye. “Even though I’m not too good at it.”

I frowned, turning to him. “That’s not true. Why would you say that?”

“I did let a piece of metal stab you in the foot yesterday. I should’ve been better at my job,” he said sheepishly.

“That’s not your fault, Zane. It’s only because of you that I’m still alive and breathing. Please don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re my fiercest protector.”

Zane smiled. “Okay, thanks. I just wanted to hear it.”

I chuckled, shaking my head at him. “You’re really something, aren’t you, Zane Adams?”

“Yes. I’m Lia Snow’s boyfriend.” He grinned.

I didn’t reply. Just squeezed his hand and smiled. “Come on now. Let’s go.”

We let go of each other’s hand and finally stepped out of the car.

School looked the same. Kids rushed through the entrance like they always did, earbuds in, heads down. Some looked seconds away from attempting suicide or falling asleep standing. Others looked cheerful, chattering and laughing in groups.

Zane and I stepped in, side by side, and quickly spotted the Hounds. Ajax, Warner, Aaron, and Sheila, all huddled together near the vending machines, their voices low, expressions grim.
