I smiled, reaching up and pressing my lips against his. Zane started to kiss me back, but paused and pulled away suddenly. He grabbed my chin and pushed my head back, against the pillow, making me suck in a breath. I stared up at him, into his black, werewolf eyes. “No. That’s cheating.”

“No, it isn’t,” I challenged. “It’s the purest way to show love.”

“No,” Zane shook his head. “It’s cheating.”

“Then what do you want me to do?” I asked, squirming. “You’re holding me down.”

“Stop struggling,” he replied. “Give up control. Give up yourself to me. Complete submission. Complete trust. Complete faith.”

A shiver crawled through me,

“You want to restrain me?” I whispered.

He considered it. “Would you let me?”

“You can do it if you want, but there’s no point. I couldn’t snatch control from you even if I wanted. You’re a million times stronger, Zane. I’m restrained right now. Every moment I spend with you, every moment I allow myself to be vulnerable, every second I don’t have my guard up, it’s proof of my trust in you. I love you with every inch of my being. And you’d know it if you simply stared into my eyes long enough.”

Maybe I was imagining it, but his heart skipped a beat.

He stared at me, into my eyes, unblinking, for a long moment.

Then he slowly let go of my wrists, allowing me to wrap my arms around his neck.

“I love you, Zane Adams. But this is cheating too.”

“What is?”

“You promised you’d make me feel loved. Instead you’re making me prove mine.”

“I’ll make it up to you,” he replied, corners of his mouth curling into a smile.

“When?”

“Immediately.”

He captured my mouth with his before I could blink.

-ZANE’S POV-

Ab

I kissed her until she was breathless. Then I allowed myself to move on, to even sweeter parts of her body, like her neck. But Lia tensed under me, her body bracing itself. I pulled away with a frown.

“I’m not gonna mark you,” I said. “You can relax and enjoy this.”

She let out a breath of relief, and I kissed her again, letting her melt into me. Within moments, the vein in her neck started to pulse, inviting me to do what was needed. To sink my canines. into her flesh and leave a permanent mark upon her skin, the mark that would tell everyone who she belonged to.

But I couldn’t do that just yet. There were many more important things to focus on. A lot of danger I had to first get rid of, before tying her body to mine. Once I’d mark her, there would be no escape for her. If something happened to me, if The Order managed to kill me, Lia’s heart would forever be shattered. The mark would strengthen our bond beyond reason. She would lose parts of herself to me. It was the last step before consummating our bond, and I intended to wait for the right time to do it.

Her fingers grabbed onto my hair, desperate. She pulled me closer, her back arching up to press her body against mine. I put more of my weight onto her, wrapping one arm around her waist to serve her what she wanted.

She moaned softly, immediately driving me crazy.

I growled, tearing myself away from her, even as I kept her small body trapped underneath mine. I couldn’t risk freeing her just yet. What if she crawled off the bed and ran? I had to keep her right here.

“What?” she cried, her breath in quick gasps. “What, Zane?” she snapped.

“What?” I asked sharply.

“Why are you stopping?” she cried, her eyebrows pulled together. “Why do you always do this? Do you not desire me enough?”

I caught her neck, pressing my lips to hers, forcing my tongue inside her mouth.

She whimpered, and I pulled away. “Shut up,” I whispered. “Don’t ever say that again, you hear me? You’re playing a dangerous game, love.”

“I didn’t do anything,” she said raspily. “You started it, and you’re trying to end it. I am not your damned puppet, Zane.”

“Yes you are,” I replied, the insulting words leaving my mouth without warning.

Her eyes widened slightly, but she didn’t look hurt.

I let go of her neck and cupped her cheek, staring at her. Goddess, she was so beautiful.

“You’re gonna be anything I want you to be, aren’t you?” I whispered, my tone much gentler now. “I don’t ever say it, but Lia… the Goddess created us for each other. We should both be each other’s puppets. Don’t you think so?”

An amused smile slowly crept onto her face. “I do.”

“Why are you smiling like that?” I narrowed my eyes.

She giggled softly. “No reason.”

“Tell me,” I urged.

“You said it in a moment of heat and then twisted your words into something romantic. Quite manipulative of you.”

I bit my tongue, suppressing my own smile. “You liked it in either case,” I replied. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten anything.”

“Forgotten what?”

“How excited you were when I first started pursuing you. Your heart beat…” I-trailed a finger down the side of her neck, making her entire body tense up. “It would be off the charts every time I showed up in your bedroom.”

“As I’ve said before,” she whispered, “I was afraid of you.”

“And thrilled all the same.” I smirked.

“So what?” she said.

“So you like being afraid. You like being pushed around by me. You enjoy being controlled, even though you strive for control. everywhere else.”

She swallowed, hard enough for me to hear it. “Maybe. I’m not trying to hide it from you.”

I smiled now, satisfied. “My naughty little Lia.” I placed a lingering kiss on her cheek.

“Hey,” she scolded, turning her face away. “You’ll leave a mark again, Zane.”

“That’s okay,” I replied, taking her chin and making her face me again. “Your parents know you’re in a relationship now. These things are bound to happen.”

“It’s still embarrassing,” she retorted. “Wouldn’t you feel awkward if your parents saw a hickey on your face?”

“No,” Haughed. “You’re forgetting that we actually mark our mates and flex-it. We don’t get other hickeys. Only that mark stays.”

“Oh,” she frowned, “right. Your healing abilities don’t allow hickeys.”

“Yep.”

“How lucky.”

“Not at all. I love that humans can flaunt love marks on themselves.”

-ZANE’S POV-

“Well, you have your human to do it to.”

“I do, but she has parents and she gets embarrassed.”

Lia laughed. “I can’t explain this to an animal, okay?”

I gave her a playful glare. “You did that again.”

“Don’t tickle me!” she screamed, tightly hugging her stomach.

“I’m not,” I laughed. “Relax.”

She stared at me dubiously for a second, before letting her guard down. I wanted to poke her immediately after, but I decided against it. I wanted her to feel safe with me. To trust her body to me completely, with no discomfort or unease creeping into her.

“I love you,” she said. “Animal or not.”

I smiled down at her. “I love you too. Nerd or nerd.”

She slapped my arm, chuckling.

I climbed off of her and lay down beside her, spooning her body. “Go to sleep now. It’s late.”

“What happened to making every inch of me drown in your love?” she asked.
