“Of course.”

“What… what happened to Blake?”

Zane’s expression hardened slightly. “I don’t know.”

“Would you please find out?” I asked.

“Why? How does it matter?”

I took his hands in mine. “He saved our life, Zane. I know you have every reason to hate him, but if it weren’t for him, we could’ve died.”

Zane raised a brow. “Nice to know how much faith you have in me.”

My eyes widened. “I don’t mean it like that.”

“Then? You clearly said that we’d die if it weren’t for him. You don’t think I would have protected you?”

“I didn’t say we would die, I said we could have. There’s a difference.”

“No, there isn’t.” He tried to walk away, but I quickly moved with him, blocking his way.

“Hey,” I frowned, “don’t do that.”

Zane sighed. “Look, Lia. I would’ve gotten you out of there safe and alive, even without him. Do you understand?”

“I know you would have,” I replied, frowning. “I’m not doubting you, Zane. All I meant is that he saved us. He held them back while we escaped. We should find out if he’s okay, if he’s safe. That’s all. I am in no way comparing your strength or skill to his.”

“I know that. You just said it out of the kindness of your heart,” Zane muttered, visibly relaxing. “I’m sorry. I got jealous.”

I frowned at him, stepping even closer. “You have no reason to be, Zane. I love you. You are everything to me. I don’t even like him. Have I not made that clear enough?”

“You have,” he nodded. “I’m sorry.” He pulled me to his chest, nuzzling his face into my hair. “Forgive me?”

“It’s okay,” I replied, hugging him back. “Can you find out if he’s alive?”

“I’ll call him.”

“Can you do it now?”

Zane huffed. “Fine. I’ll do it now.”

“Thank you.” I grinned up at him.

He rolled his eyes at me, but smiled anyway, pulling his phone out from his pocket. He dialled his number with one hand, while holding me to his chest with the other. He placed the phone on his ear, kissing the top of my head.

I could hear the caller tone. It rang a few times, but Blake did not answer the call.

“He’s not answering,” Zane said, lowering the phone.

“Can you try again?”

“Okay.”

Zane called again, but Blake did not pick up.

He shrugged at me.

“Zane, what if he’s dead or captured?” I asked, my stomach twisting with worry.

“Good riddance.”

“Zane,” I scowled, “don’t say that.”

“Alright, okay. I’m sure he’s not.” He took my shoulders. “Don’t worry, Lia. He will call back. And if he doesn’t, he’ll be at school tomorrow.”

“And if he’s not?”

“Then we’ll pay him a visit, alright? Please relax. Everything’s fine.”

I frowned, unable to calm myself.

“What’s wrong?” Zane sighed. “You still care about him, don’t you?”

I lowered my gaze. “It’s not that I care about him. I just… he’s someone I know. Even after what he did, he did put himself in harm’s way to protect us. To protect me. I just don’t want him to get hurt trying to save me.”

-LIA’S POV-

“I understand,” Zane said. “I do. But there’s not much we can do right now. Unless you want to visit his house immediately.”

I bit my lip. “That wouldn’t be safe, would it?”

Zane shook his head. “It’s better if we stay indoors for the night.”

“My parents?” I asked.

“There’s ten of my wolves posted outside your house, including Warner and Ajax. Ten more outside Christy’s, including Sheila and Aaron. Fifteen are right outside, surrounding my house. There’s nothing to worry about, my love. I’ve got this, okay?”

I hugged him again, closing my eyes. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I love you, Lia, and that means protecting everyone who is important to you. Don’t worry. I won’t let anyone get hurt, I promise.”

I nodded, releasing a heavy breath. “I trust you. I just got a little agitated.”

“That’s alright, sweetheart, you have every right to. You’re handling this so well.” He pulled away to look at me, pushing my hair away from my face. “I am extremely proud and lucky to be able to call you my mate.”

I smiled, slightly amused. “You would’ve done so much better with a mate like yourself. A strong werewolf Luna.”

Zane scoffed. “Yuck.”

I laughed. “Really? Yuck?”

“Yeah. The thought of anyone else makes me want to puke now. It’s disgusting.”

I smiled, raising my brows. “Really? That’s how much you love me?”

“I do. You still doubt it?”

“No, I don’t. I just like hearing it over and over.”

Mischief glinted in his eye immediately. “Is that so?” Without warning, he lifted me into his arms, making me squeal. “I will repeat it until you get sick of it.”

“That’s not possible.”

“We’ll see,” Zane said, his voice getting deeper. “You don’t think I’ll just be saying the words, do you?”

He started ascending the stairs with me.

“What do you mean?” I asked softly, as my heart gave a loud thump in my chest.

“I’ll make you feel it, my Little Lia. I’ll make every inch of your body feel like it’s drowning in my love for you.”

Zane jumped, making me gasp and grab onto his clothes, closing my eyes shut. We landed on the upper floor, and then before I knew it, we were in his bedroom, the door locked, and me on his bed.

I shuffled back, away from him, my eyes wide. “Zane,” I whispered, failing to form any other words.

He let out a soft growl and climbed in, stradlling my body.

Goosebumps covered me, my heart knocking against my ribs.

“What are you-“

“Shh.” He placed a finger on my lips, then took hold of my wrists ma and pressed them against the mattress. “Say that you love me, and that you want me to claim every inch of you.”

I blinked a couple of times, my breath hitching.

“Say it, Lia,” he ordered, his eyes darkening until they were completely black.

“I-I love you,” I whispered.

He shook his head, leaning in until our noses almost touched. “Needs more conviction.”

My insides quivered. He’d never acted like this before. I didn’t know whether I was terrified or thrilled.

“I love you, Zane,” I said, trying to sound as genuine as I could.

“I don’t know, I’m not convinced,” he said, his hold on my wrists tightening. “Find a way to prove it.”
