“I should probably let you go now, right?”
I nodded, hard.
“But you’re gonna scream, and I’m not ready to leave yet.”
I shook my head as much as I could with his hand tightly blocking my mouth.
“Don’t make a lot of noise either, please.
I hummed softly.
He removed his hand again, and I coughed, scowling at him.
“What are you doing?” I asked. “Why are you… harassing me like this?”
Zane frowned. “Harassing you?” he asked. “You… you don’t feel anything?” He looked genuinely confused.
I blinked up at him. Did he mean the weird tingles? The electricity? Did he feel it too? I thought I was imagining it.
My phone buzzed again, and now the doorbell rang.
“That must be Blake,” I said. “Zane, please let me go.”
His expressed hardened, eyes narrowing. “Blake? Why?”
“To celebrate my birthday,” I whispered. “Please. Let go of me. What are you doing here? What is this?”
His face fell slightly. “Right… happy birthday, Lia. You turned sixteen as well, right?”
I nodded. “Happy birthday to you too. Now leave. Please, Zane,” I begged.
“Why are you going out with him? Do you… do you like him or something?” he asked.
I tried to push him away again, but he only pushed me against the door harder. I clicked my tongue. “That’s nome of your business,” I stated. “Look, Zane, whatever this is, whatever new prank you guys have come up with, keep it to school. Or I will go to authorities. Bullying me at school is one thing, but you guys are breaking into my home now? This is not done.”
He raised a brow, his blue eyes darkening further. “Or what? What are you gonna do? What do you think the authorities will do?”
I frowned, then sighed in defeat. “I didn’t think you were like the others,” I said softly. “But you just proved me wrong. There’s clearly a reason you’re their Alpha.”
Zane’s eyes widened. “Alpha?”
“I’ve heard them call you that. It’s stupid, by the way.” I didn’t know where I was getting the courage to insult him, but it was probably because I knew Blake was outside. The doorbell rang again.
Zane’s lips curled into a smile. “Your hero is getting restless,” he whispered, leaning in closer to me. I sucked in a breath, my eyes widening, heart racing faster. Zane’s gaze dropped to my lips for a second, and I curled my toes, bracing myself. Was he going to kiss me? No, he couldn’t stoop that low. “I will leave, Lia, for now. But I will be back whenever I want. You don’t wanna go to the authorities or anyone else unless you want them to drop dead. I promise I won’t harm you in any way. Don’t be afraid of me. Alright?”
I gaped at him, unable to digest his words. Finally, he let go of my wrists and stepped away from me. But I didn’t let myself relax. Not while he was still here.
“I’ll see you again tonight. Keep the door unlocked if you don’t want it broken down.” Zane winked, and then placed his hand on my eyes.
“Hey,” I said, pushing his hand off.
“Behave,” he scolded, making me freeze. “Keep your eyes shut.”
I found myself obliging. He took off his hand, and yet, I still did not open my eyes. I heard him walk away.
When I opened my eyes, he was gone. My window was open.
I released a trembling breath, unsure of what to feel. Then I quickly grabbed my phone, which was still ringing.
“Hey, I’m here, I’m here. Sorry, I was… I’ll be down in a second. Sorry.” I hung up before he could respond, then approached the window and looked out. My heart jumped in my chest when my gaze met Zane’s. He was still standing outside, staring up. A smile took over his lips when he saw me. Then he turned around and left again.
-LIA’S POV-
I quickly hurried down the stairs and opened the door, to find Blake standing outside with a huge bouquet of red roses in hist arms. My eyes widened in surprise.
“Hi,” I suppressed a chuckle, grinning at him.
Blake smiled at me. “Happy birthday, Lia. You look beautiful.” He handed me the bouquet, and I quickly smelled it, my smile. growing wider. “Come here, birthday girl.” He opened his arms and leaned in for a hug. But then he stopped once he got close enough. His face fell, and his eyebrows knitted together. “You… you smell like men’s perfume.”
My eyes widened, and I blinked up at him. “Yeah…” I chuckled awkwardly, “I guess I do.”
Blake leaned away slightly. “How?”
“I love men’s perfume,” I said cheerfully. “It smells so much better and lasts so much longer. I just prefer it over women’s perfume. Don’t you?”
Blake’s frown deepened slightly. But he didn’t question me further. “No, I like how women smell. Feminine and floral.”
Technically, I didn’t lie.
–
“Fair enough. I guess that’s the attraction of the opposite sex.” I playfully punched his arm.
Blake smiled, studying me. “You’re awfully cheerful.”
I laughed. “I am. It’s my birthday. And you got me a rose bouquet. I’m so happy.”
Oh God, I was a disaster. And extremely tired. After everything that had happened, firstly the wolf last night, and then The Hound just a few minutes ago, I just wanted to curl up in bed.
“You look beautiful when you’re happy,” Blake complimented. “Your smile is really pretty.”
“Thank you,” I grinned.
“Come here.” He now pulled me into a hug, and the second. he was close enough, the scent of his cologne washed over me, immediately doing something to my body. His neck lightly touched the side of my cheek, and the same sparks that I’d felt when Zane’s skin made contact with mine, erupted throughout my body. “Mine,” he muttered in a low tone. First Zane, now him?!
I sucked in a breath, my eyes widening. Blake pulled away a moment later, his eyes seeming darker than normal. What was wrong with people? Was he high too?
Maybe I was high.
“Did you just say-“
“You wanna leave now?” Blake asked, offering me his hand.
I stared at him, confused.
“Sure,” I then replied, nodding, placing my hand in his.
The tingles erupted once more, and I gasped and pulled my hand away.
“Sorry, it’s the weather,” Blake said, smiling apologetically.
I frowned, nodding. Yeah, that was probably it. Static electricity. That was the simplest explanation.
And here I’d started imagining things.
“That’s okay,” I said. “Give me a minute. Let me put these in a vase.”
After I did that, Blake led me to his car and like a gentleman, opened the door for me. I thanked him and sat inside, but he didn’t stop at that. Blake bent down and leaned in towards me, making me suck in a breath and jam my back against the seat.
“Relax Lia,” he chuckled, “just putting on your seatbelt for you.”
He grabbed the belt and then leaned in further to clasp it, our faces stopping mere inches away. Our gazes locked for a second and his breath fanned my lips, causing my heart to pound in my chest. A small smile took over his lips, and then he leaned away from me, closing the door and walking around the car to take his seat.
I took in a deep breath, offering him a small smile when he got in.
Blake drove us to a lovely high-end restaurant, where he had a private table booked for us. I was surprised at how rich he was, but also that he was willing to spend that much on a girl he’d known for two days. He was perfect a gentleman the whole time, opening every door for me, pulling my chair out, helping me with my purse and everything else.
We spent over three hours together, talking and laughing, as he spoilt me in a way no one had ever done before. I had so much fun that I did not feel sleepy for even a second. Blake was the perfect man: Gorgeous, caring and kind. My heart was mush in my chest.
“Lia,” he said, gently taking my hand in his as we sat across from each other. Those same tingles crept up my hand, making me curl my toes under the table. “This is the best time I’ve had with anyone in a while. You’re so fun to be around.”
–
Heat rose to my cheeks. “Really?”
“Without a doubt,” he replied, then brought my hand to his lips. and planted a soft kiss to it. Butterflies broke out in my stomach, my cheeks hurting from smiling too much. “Don’t get me wrong,” he began, gently rubbing his thumb over my knuckles, “and I swear I don’t say this to every girl out there, I feel an odd connection with you. Something I’ve never felt with anyone before. It’s like there’s-“
“Electricity,” I whispered, and he smiled.
“Yes, exactly. Don’t laugh, but, I feel like the universe is telling us to be together.”
I couldn’t help it. I laughed.
Blake’s grin widened further. “Hey,” he playfully scolded, making me laugh harder.
“I’m sorry, that was so cheesy!”
