“Then why did you take me out with them?” she asked.

I lowered my gaze. “I’m sorry. I missed my best friend. I wanted you guys to get along. I didn’t know this would happen.”

She sighed, wiping away her tears. “How can you date one of them, Lia? How does this work? Why does he want you, a human? Why not a werewolf like himself?”

“You know those books and movies?” I grinned sheepishly. “They talk about a soulmate bond type of thing?”

“Like when… werewolves imprint on someone?” she asked.

“Yes.”

Her eyes widened. “Zane imprinted on you?”

“Yeah. You could say that.”

“But how is that possible? He’s known you forever and was a jerk to you!”

“It happens after they turn sixteen.”

She deflated slightly. “Oh.”

“Blake imprinted on me too.”

“What?” she said in disbelief. “He’s a werewolf too?”

My eyes widened. “Right. Yeah. He is.”

“Oh God,” she whispered, holding her head. “How could we not tell?”

I shrugged. “If you look at them now, with their heights and builds, it’s kind of obvious. But we didn’t know they existed. So can you really blame us?”

She shook her head. “I guess not.”

“Yep.”

“But Lia, are you really planning to be with him for the rest of your life? Isn’t that too much commitment? What if he eats you?”

I laughed. “He will, but not in the way you think.”

Christy scowled. “You are a very bad girl.”

I laughed, pulling her into a hug. “I love you, Chris. I promise you, we’re safe. Zane is an incredible man. They’re all the exact same people you had burgers with today. Being werewolves only means that they can protect us better if the need ever arises.”

She pulled away, looking much calmer now. “They hurt us in the past, Lia.”

“I know. But that was just human bullying.” I shrugged. “You forgave them for that when you agreed to hang out with them. Can you forgive them for something that isn’t their fault? Can you trust me?”

She stared at me silently for a moment, then released a breath. “Can I tell anyone?”

“No, you can’t. That’s why he had to lock you here.”

“This is his house?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Atta girl.”

I laughed, feeling relief flood through me. We were going to be okay.

“So what now? Will he let me go home or keep me here?”

“If you promise not to tell anyone, he’ll let you go.”

“Okay. I won’t tell anyone, I promise.”

“Thank you for trusting me, Chris.”

She shrugged, rolling her eyes. “I have, my entire life. I’m not gonna suddenly stop now.”

I smiled. “Can I call him inside?”

“Yes, but ask him to keep a distance and to not touch me again,” she replied, frowning.

“He won’t,” I reassured. “I promise.”

She took a deep breath, then gestured towards the door. “Okay. You can call him inside.”

I walked up to the door and opened it, letting Zane in.

He stepped inside, a sheepish look on his face. “Hi. You’re not gonna give me a glitter scalp, right?”

Christy allowed herself a tiny smile. “No.”

“Thank you,” Zane grinned. “I’m sorry about kidnapping you.”

She hugged herself. “It’s okay, I guess, you didn’t hurt me.”

“I’m also sorry for scaring you and for Warner threatening you. You weren’t shutting up. It was rather loud.”

She scowled. “That was mean.”

“Forgive me?” Zane requested.

“Alright. Only because Lia vouched for you.”

“Great.” Zane smiled. “Friends again?” He extended his hand towards her, making her gasp and back away. “Right,” Zane immediately withdrew, “too soon. I get it.”

I laughed. “Yeah. Don’t touch her, and keep a distance.”

“Got it. Can I offer to drop her home?”

I glanced at Christy.

She nodded.

“Okay. Let’s go then.” He gestured towards the door.

“Lia will come along, right?”

“Of course.” I took her hand and linked our fingers. “I’m nol leaving you alone.”

“Okay.”

“I love you, Chris.”

“I love you too.”

I glanced at Zane, who gave me a reassuring smile. I smiled back at him, before we left to drop Christy home.

-LIA’S POV-

We dropped Christy home, and then returned to Zane’s, who had decided it would be best if I stay with him for the day. I left my parents a text that I was staying over at Christy’s, and finally, I could tell her to corroborate my story if anyone asked. It felt good to be able to share things with her again. It was a relief to talk to someone who would truly understand what I felt. Someone who had lived their life like me-in the dark, completely oblivious to the truth about the world.

“You good?” Zane asked as we entered his house, closing the door behind him.

I turned to him. “Yeah. Why?”

“I thought after everything that happened, you might be stressed?” He stepped closer and wrapped his arms around my waist.

“I am,” I said honestly. “But I’m starting to get used to it.”

Zane’s face fell, and he leaned in to rest his forehead against mine. “Please don’t say that, my love. I don’t want you to get used to trouble and worrying. This isn’t-“

“I know,” 1 interrupted, wrapping my arms around his neck. “It’s not the life you wanted for me. But if this is the price I’ve to pay to be with you, it’s worth it. I love you, Zane Adams. I wouldn’t change a thing about my life.”

“Nah, that’s an overstatement,” Zane said. “I know you’re afraid, Lia. And who likes being afraid? No one wants chaos. Wouldn’t you prefer a quiet, peaceful life?”

I smiled at him, reaching up to kiss his nose. “I like peace, of course. But peace can get boring sometimes. At least our lives are interesting.”

Zane chuckled, pulling away to narrow his eyes at me. “You’re crazy, you know that?”

“Little bit.” I nodded.

“A lot.”

“Less than you.” I shrugged, stepping away from him. A thought. struck my mind. “Zane, can I ask you something?”
