“But if you release this information, you’ll also be exposing your relationship with Mark Amber. You can’t do this,” her assistant begged, trying to stop her. “Even if we leave this industry, even if we just go back to the life we once led, that’s gonna be better than going out in flames. We don’t need to sacrifice ourselves just to bring down the enemy. Don’t you understand this industry yet?”
Amber’s burning gaze was filled with conviction. “Did you think that even though I failed, Mark will just let me go? He won’t. Don’t forget, I have evidence against him in my hands. He’s not gonna go easy on me. Instead of waiting for that to happen, I might as well take the initiative and attack first.”
“Do you really have to do this?” he asked.
“Yes, and I want Emma and Nathan to go down with me,” Amber clenched the sheets in her fists as she narrowed her gaze with certainty.
Her assistant took a deep breath. He was helpless to resist Amber when she was this committed to an action. “Okay, calm down. I’ll go organize it now.”
If she wanted to advance like Emma, she would find that route impossible. But if she wanted to destroy herself, it was almost too easy. She was afraid that Nathan and Mark would find her first and blackmail her. Before that could happen, she had to find a way to get out of the hospital and hide somewhere.
Amber’s assistant quickly rented a small room and contacted some reporters he knew. He would make sure the news they were about to release wouldn’t be blocked by any of the big companies.
The entertainment headlines made quite a splash the next day with titles like “Shocking Turn of Events: Global Entertainment Plays Dirty,” “The Secret Behind This Special Contribution Award: Emma Slept with the Judges Agreement Exposed,” and “Global May Be the Dirtiest Agency in History.” In an instant, the industry was in an uproar. Global was scolded for operating like a brothel, Emma and Amber were shamed for their inappropriate behavior, and Mark Whittaker was criticized for encouraging it.
The online community responded with their own attacks. No one was surprised that Global and Amber had been involved; they had already gained a reputation for shady dealings. But they hadn’t expected Emma to be involved as well. They felt duped. Just the night before, they had sincerely applauded Emma for her award. Now they felt embarrassed that they had supported someone who cheated, and they responded by attacking her that much harder.
Unlike the previous rumors, this information could not be denied. The news had come too ferociously and was too shocking. This time, there was evidence, and Nathan’s name was clearly all over it. Global was over, along with all the hard work he put in through the years.
After seeing all these comments and stories, Nathan felt like he was about to explode with anger and frustration. He knew that Amber was the only person who’d been close enough to him to get this kind of evidence, but he couldn’t understand why she’d chosen to sacrifice herself.
Global staff began resigning in droves. Nathan knew deep down that he could be replaced as soon as the board of directors held a meeting. He would be kicked out of the company and left with nothing. Nathan dialed Amber’s number over and over. He even went to the hospital to try and find her, but she’d already hidden herself away. He couldn’t find her anywhere. In the end, Nathan phoned Amber’s assistant again and again. He called until Amber finally got on the phone.
“Where are you, you traitor?” he yelled. “I could kill you for this!” Nathan was out of control. If there had been any doubt about his true nature before, it was all coming out now.
“Kill me? Do you really think I’m afraid of you at this stage?” Amber yelled right back, matching his anger with her own. “Did you think you wouldn’t face the consequences of selling me off like that? Thanks to your lack of trust, you signed this agreement and gave me the chance to secure evidence against all of you. I don’t care if it’s you, Whitaker, or Emma. I’m gonna take you all down with me!”
“You’re crazy, Amber!” he shouted. “Tonight, I had a miscarriage while I was in the operating room. Did you even consider that the child I was losing was yours? Did you feel an ounce of guilt? I know you didn’t, so don’t blame me for being heartless. Nathan, you deserve everything you’re going to get!” And then Amber hung up the phone.
Nathan screamed in anger as he hurled his phone to the floor. If he hadn’t betrayed Emma in the first place and slept with Amber, he wouldn’t have been in this situation. As for Emma, who hadn’t done anything wrong, she now had to carry around this smear on her name. She’d be stuck with a reputation of having slept her way to the top.
Nathan was helpless, and Mark refused to answer questions. No one seemed to be able to get a hold of him. His absence from the public eye seemed to confirm the rumors. If he’d gone into hiding, all the accusations must be true.
At home, Emma watched the entertainment news from the sofa as she saw the reports about her. She couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. Eric embraced her tightly, supporting her and letting her know he would always be there to back her up.
“Emma, what are we gonna do now?” Lisa asked as she looked worriedly at the news. “It seems like Amber’s been driven into a corner, and that’s why she decided to drag you down too. It’s okay for her to go down, but what about you? You’re innocent. You deserved that award. Now everyone’s against you.”
“I’m not entirely innocent,” Emma responded, well aware of her own role in this mess. “But Amber can’t be found, and Mark Whitaker isn’t responding, and Nathan obviously has no idea how to deal with this situation.”
Lisa pointed out, “The evidence is already out there. Shouldn’t we be doing something?”
“A lot of this is my fault,” Emma replied helplessly. “I just didn’t think through all the consequences well enough. Everything ran so smoothly up until now. I’d forgotten how painful it is to fall.”
Although she had been wary of Mark, she’d never expected that he and Nathan would end up working together. Eric spoke up, “Now I see only two solutions to this. One, look for Mark and Nathan. Two, announce our relationship.”
“Of course, the best solution would be to find Mark, but from what I know, he’s already left the country and is hiding out. In that case, we’re left with looking for Nathan. Only the two of them know what other agreements they had between them,” Emma nodded.
“I understand, but even if I find Nathan, he isn’t going to help me,” Lisa said.
“Who said you should be the one to look for him? That’s my job,” Eric replied. “Did you think I would just stand by while something like this is going on? But when I find him, I’m not going to confront him as the CEO of Kaleidoscope Entertainment. I’ll confront him as your husband.”
