She too licked my feet.

Then came Blake.

His head was bowed more than everyone else’s. His movements were careful, calculated. Ashamed.

He bowed to lick my feet, but I pulled them away.

He met my gaze, glancing at Zane and then at me.

Was I going to let him beside me?

My eyes shot open before I could find out.

I gasped, quickly sitting up.

“Hey, slow down.” Zane was beside me instantly, wrapping his arm around my back. “How do you feel?”

“Where are we?” I asked, looking around.

“My place,” Zane replied, setting the pillow upright against the headboard so I could lean against it. “How do you feel, Lia?”

“I’m okay,” I muttered, eyebrows knitting into a frown. “Zane, where’s Christy?”

Zane pursed his lips.

My heart gave a thump. “Zane,” I whispered. “Where is Christy?”

“She’s… locked in a bedroom downstairs.”

“What? Why locked?”

“Aaron had to shift in front of her to protect her.”

I released a breath, burying my face in my hands. “God. Is she okay?”

“She’s been screaming and crying for the last hour to let her out. Warner had to threaten her to calm her down slightly.”

“I have to see her,” I said, ready to get off the bed.

“Wait,” Zane said, standing up. “Careful, love.” He removed the blanket from my legs.

I glanced down at my foot. There was bandage around it.

“It’s not hurting,” I said.

“That’s because it’s healed.”

“Thank God,” I whispered. “Then why is it still bandaged?”

“Because you can’t let Christy know you’re something too. She saw the condition of your foot when we brought the two of you here.”

“You basically kidnapped her, right?” I asked.

“Aaron did. We had no choice, Lia.”

“I know. I’m not criticising you,” I clarified. “Just thinking what to say to her.”

“The truth.” Zane shrugged. “That’s the only way.”

“Yeah,” I agreed, nodding.

“Come on. She needs you.” He took my hands and helped me to my feet, before wrapping an arm around me and leading me downstairs.

“Where’s the rest?” I asked.

“They’re back at the packhouse. Giving new instructions and trying to get new information.”

“From where?” I asked.

“We have a couple of prisoners,” he replied.

“You do?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh.” The thought of that made me uncasy, even though I knew they deserved whatever Zane would do to them.

“I know all this is still new to you. But don’t worry, you hopefully won’t have to get used to it, alright? I will do everything in my power to ensure that.”

“I know.” I leaned my head against his arm.

Zane led me to a room, and stopped outside the door. “She’s inside. I think you should go in alone. Talk to her, calm her down.”

“Yeah, that would be appropriate.”

He gave me the keys, and I took in a deep breath, before unlocking the door. The second I opened it, Christy came rushing out, pushing past me. Zane caught hold of her arm just in time, dragging her back.

“Let me go!” she screamed, crying and thrashing against his hold. “Lia, we have to run!”

Zane sighed and took her back inside the room, and I quickly followed after him. He threw her on the bed..

“Chris, calm down,” I said, sitting down beside her. She quickly shuffled away from Zane, her heartbeat loud enough for me to hear.

“He-he’s a monster, Lia. They’re all monsters. They-they’re not human,” she cried, tears rolling down her cheeks.

-LIA’S POV-

It pained me to see her so afraid.

“Zane, you can go,” I told him.

“Okay. I’m right outside.” He left the room, closing the door behind him.

Christy threw her arms around me, breaking into sobs. “Thank God you’re okay,” she cried, burying her face in my shoulder. “I thought he’d hurt you.”

I hugged her, rubbing her back. “He would never. He loves me, Chris.”

She froze, then pulled away from me, her eyes wide. “You know.”

“Of course I do. He’s my boyfriend.”

“Are you?” she asked, standing up from the bed.

“No, no, I’m not,” I said, taking her hand. “I’m not like them. Sit down.”

She sniffed, then reluctantly obliged. “I don’t understand anything, Lia. What’s going on?”

“I will explain everything. First you tell me, are you alright? You’re not hurt, are you?”

She shook her head. “I’m fine.”

“Okay, good. Now… love?” you remember those books and movies you

“This is not like that, Lia,” she said, glaring at me. “That’s fantasy. This is real life.”

“I know, I know. It’s so much scarier when it’s real. Obviously.”

“But it can’t,” she cried. “How can it be real, Lia? We’re sixteen years old. How are we just finding out about this? How does no one else know?”

“Because they live in secret,” I explained. “Humans are scared of anything that’s different. You know how we are.”

“They are terrifying, Lia. Have you ever seen them… do that?”

“Do what?”

“Anything! Move around, growl, transform. It’s all-“

“I know, I know,” I nodded, taking both her hands. “I had the exact same reaction when I found out too. You remember when that wolf attacked?”

Her mouth fell open. “That was a werewolf,” she whispered.

“Yes. I found out that day.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to put you into any kind of danger,” I replied.
