Despite that, Amber’s sympathy for him only grew.
She nodded and said, “Yeah, you’re amazing. Any story you share with others will be amazing too.”
“Do you think I’m amazing?” Liam asked seriously; he stopped drinking and stared at Amber, still drunk.
“Yes!”
Amber nodded firmly, showing her admiration for him.
“You’re the most amazing and the funniest guy I’ve ever met! You’ve been to so many places. You’ve caught crabs at the bottom of the sea in Komier, looked for diamonds in Zier Dessert, and learned to hunt like Mori People on an island in Nouveauland… Plus, you learned professional sewing techniques. One year of your life is more interesting than ten years of mine!”
“Uh, well…” Liam scratched his head awkwardly, feeling guilty.
Yes, he had been to a lot of places and experienced many bizarre and interesting things. However, those experiences were fabricated, especially sewing…. In truth, he had just watched a professional sewing master do the job and never leamed it.
He didn’t expect that Amber would believe a joke he casually made. She even got the wrong idea, thinking he was an interesting and awesome man. It filled him with guilt.
“What’s the matter?” Amber blinked. Then, she added more enthusiastically, ‘Is there a problem? Are there any more unforgettable experiences? Can you tell me? I really love listening to you tell me about your past!”
“No, there isn’t.” Liam shook his head and tried his best to act sensibly. “You think too good of me. Stop thinking of me as such a great guy. I’m just ordinary, and I’m vulgar. When you get to know the real me, you might not find me amazing at all.”
“How come?” Amber suddenly became agitated, as if her idol was insulted.
“Liam, you can’t say that about yourself!” she countered loudly. “You’re amazing! Even if you’ve never traveled the world, you have to admit that you’re amazing. You’re more interesting than Mateo and Macsen. No one can be compared to you!”
To Amber, Liam was akin to a god who had suddenly entered her dull black-and-white world. His thoughts, his past, and his looks all dazzled her. She always thought the best of him, and he could be considered her super idol.
Since her idol insulted himself, she felt both angry and sad.
“Do you think I’m that great?” Liam whispered. Seeing how Amber’s face flushed in agitation because of him moved him.
“Yes, I do! If not, I wouldn’t have always clung to you.” Amber frowned angrily.
She had no idea why she was so furious. Perhaps she couldn’t accept her idol falling into disgrace.
Drunk, Liam’s sight blurred as he asked Amber in a daze, “If I’m so great, why do you want to look for another guy?
“Huh?” Amber’s anger subsided; she was dumbstruck.
She couldn’t understand why Liam suddenly raised such an awkward and ambiguous question for no reason. “Can’t I…look for another guy?”
Amber pursed her lips, her tone cautious.
“Of course, you can.” Drunk and dazed, Liam approached Amber and held her shoulders. “I’m just worried if you can find a better guy than me since you admire me that much.”
Amber could smell the alcohol on him as well as the fresh scent of his breath. She found it unfamiliar. Uneasy, she moved away and tried to put some distance between them.
“Liam, let’s call it a night. You’re drunk.”
“Yes, I’m drunk, but I can still think straight. I’d like to know the answer to that question.” Liam ignored Amber’s avoidance and instinctively approached her. “You just need to tell me what you’ll do if you can’t find a better guy than me.”
“If I can’t find a better guy than you, I won’t get married.” Amber disliked it when Liam acted like a confused scumbag. Her frown exposed her loathing. “I can focus on my career like Ms. Ellsworth. Men don’t seem like a necessity.”
“Men aren’t necessities?” Liam chuckled when he heard that. “Oh, Amber! I can’t believe it. You actually said that.” At the very least, Amber was a candidate for a good and virtuous housewife. Her dream was to start a family with her beloved man and take care of her family. She was a typical woman who would value her husband more than anything else.
Yet now, she was saying that men weren’t a necessity. It was incompatible with her character, and Liam found her a stranger.
“I’m right, aren’t I?” Amber said, stubborn. “I thought the romance between Ms. Ellsworth and Mr. Halston was touching. It was the kind of love I yearned for. But what you told me made me realize that the seemingly passionate Mr. Guajardo was in truth a terrible scumbag. Ms. Ellsworth could have been very successful, but she got hurt repeatedly in love. I suddenly realized that her life might be more amazing without romances and men.”
“It’s not right. You still end up as an extreme person in another aspect,” Liam said, helpless and sober after listening to Amber’s logic.
He wanted to dissuade her from having such extreme thoughts, but upon thinking, he realized she was right. Men could be said to be useless for women.
“There are nice men and marriages too. For example, I… Liam looked at Amber, then asked seriously, “Do you think I’ll be a good husband and father?”
“You..” Amber looked at Liam, no longer as shy and reserved as she once was. She didn’t admire him that much, either-she had come to her senses. “You’re an amazing guy, but you won’t be a good husband or father.”
Liam was flabbergasted and heartbroken. “Why not?”
She used to admire him deeply, but had suddenly stopped having such thoughts about him.
“You love freedom, and you’re in love with someone else. So, you’d better… spend the rest of your life alone!” Then, Amber pushed Liam away and bolted.
Liam watched Amber leave; he could still hear what she had just said, claiming that he should spend the rest of his life alone. It made him emotional.
Yes, he loved freedom and disliked being bound. It might be his destiny because the opposite of freedom was loneliness.
He shook his head and took a few deep breaths, trying to make himself sober with the cold night breeze.
Amber might not be a part of his life. He would leave the fort sooner or later. The most important thing was to leave the fort smoothly with Flossie and Leia.
He couldn’t meddle in Amber’s fate. It would be fine if she married someone or took over Benjamin’s career. It was her business, and had nothing much to do with Liam…
When Liam thought of it that way, he was no longer gloomy. He was finally enlightened, and smiled.
“Don’t be a busybody, Liam! You never stop for any interlude!”
Amber was never his in the first place. He believed that his displeasure was because of his despicable possessiveness over someone who had once admired him deeply.
He staggered back to his bedroom and dozed off in bed.
These days, Benjamin had pressured him into fighting for territories against the Jenkinses’ powerful opponents. He nearly got killed several times, and was exhausted. With how tired he was, he easily fell asleep. Upon returning to the fort, Mateo suddenly made a scene and infuriated him. He had the extreme urge to bomb the entire fort and get it over with.
“Liam, save us!”
In a trance, Liam suddenly saw Leia’s terrified face. He abruptly woke up and leaped in bed.
“Something’s wrong!”
Liam frowned as his heart raced. An ominous feeling gripped him. He and Leia had been close since childhood, and they had something akin to telepathy. At that time, he could feel that Leia was in great danger-something might have happened to her.
Without any delay, he quickly got out of bed and grabbed a jacket before rushing to the cell where Leia and Flossie were imprisoned.
However, the previously relaxed security had turned strict. Something extraordinary must have happened.
The armed leader saw Liam walk over angrily and stopped right before him. “Mr. Osborne, it’s such a late hour. May I know what you’re doing here?”
“Get out of the way!” Liam instructed fiercely, his face stormy.
“Mr. Osborne, we were informed to lock the entire third jail. Without Mr. Jenkins’ pass, no one can go in. Please don’t make things difficult for us,” the leader said respectfully, though his arrogance was evident.
“Stop pretending, Andrew!” Liam glared at Andrew Elrod and mocked him, “You’re Mateo’s lapdog, but you suddenly brought up Mr. Jenkins. Are you trying to put me down?”
Benjamin held absolute power in the fort, but there were many different forces within. Although Liam and Mateo acted like brothers on the surface, they fought each other in secret.
