“Don’t be scared or angry. I’ve put away the gun. Come here… Let’s talk it out. Plus, the wedding preparations are almost done. You have to marry me. Be good… Come here now!
“Don’t do this, Matt. I’m scared… Amber muttered.
She watched how Mateo had suddenly lost control; he was both fierce and gentle. For the first time, she found him a stranger. She was at a loss, filled with contradicting emotions. Subconsciously, she hid behind Liam although the latter didn’t pull her.
“Go back. I’ll…think about it before I discuss it with you.”
“Fine. Think it through.” Mateo took a deep breath to control his temper. He pretended to leave, but then said to Liar, ‘By the way, they aren’t in this orchard. Stop wasting your time to look for them here.”
Liam immediately noticed something wrong. He asked Mateo fiercely, “What do you mean?”
“Calm down. “Mateo put away his gun and placed it back around his waist. “They broke the rules and barged into the orchard. Plus, they hurt Luneth’s child. So, I locked them up for the time being.”
He appeared calm, as if he was discussing what he had eaten for dinner. He didn’t feel that he had been over the line.
“Go to hell!” Liam finally failed to hold himself back. He rushed over and grabbed Mateo’s neck fiercely. “You can harm me, but how dare you harm them!”
At the same time, Mateo’s subordinates raised their guns and aimed them at Liam. The recently eased atmosphere immediately became tense again.
“Hey, don’t!” Amber, all tensed up, braced herself to try and stop them. Even so, she was mentally exhausted.
“What? You want to strangle me?” Mateo was fearless. He grinned deviously and teased,” Cool it. I just locked them up, but they didn’t suffer. They’re fine. If you harm me, though, I can’t be sure about their condition.”
“You conniving dog!” Liam trembled angrily. However, he could only let go of Mateo since he knew perfectly well what a person the latter was. He demanded solemnly, “What do you want?’
“What do I want? You know Luneth’s status in the fort. She dotes on her only son, but your friends hurt him. I could only carry out my duty and lock them up. You couldn’t even save thern if Luneth got then instead. Don’t you think?”
Mateo spread his hands, proving himself innocent. He acted like he wasn’t the culprit, but a kind person who had sought justice for Flossie and Lela.
Luneth held a high status in the fort because she was Benjamin’s younger sister, she was second to only him in the fort. It was also because Macsen Klein, her husband, held significant military power.
Macsen was the only one who managed all the armed forces in the fort. In a savage place like the fort, strength ruled it was only realistic. Even Benjamin had to show Macsen some respect sometimes.
During these two years, the Jenkinses were busy expanding their forces. Macsen was fighting in the nearby country with his men, while Luneth stayed in the fort to take care of the children.
After so many years, Luneth had only one son. On top of that, she was currently five months pregnant. Everyone in the fort protected her with great care, and wouldn’t antagonize her or her son.
Everyone knew they would end up miserably if they got into a fight with Luneth and her son. It would be considered good if they were shot to death. In the worst case, their limbs would be cut off and they would be made into beggars-their lives would be an endless abyss.
“That’s impossible!” Amber realized how serious the situation was, but she was still full of doubts. She carefully added, ‘Ms. Ellsworth and Ms. Osborne are nice and friendly. They wouldn’t harm Luneth’s child. I’m sure there’s a misunderstanding.’
“Well, what should I say about that?” Mateo touched his chin, sounding ambiguous.” Opinions differ. Maybe the culprits think it’s a misunderstanding, but the victims think it’s the truth. I have yet to inform Master about this, so I temporarily locked them up. As to how to handle them, it all depends on Luneth.”
“Hurry up and explain to her, then! Amber said hurriedly. “Matt, you’re close to her. You know Ms. Ellsworth and Ms. Osbome would never do that on purpose. Try to persuade her to let this go, and then you can immediately set them free.”
“I don’t have a say in this.” Mateo shook his head, pretending to be helpless. “You know how much Luneth dotes on her son. Ms. Ellsworth pinned him to the ground and beat him up. His head got injured and started bleeding. I heard it’s a large cut with a lot of stitches. We can’t let it go just like that.”
“But you can’t-
Amber wanted to say more, but Liam interrupted her.
He looked at Mateo, his eyes cold and fierce. “I know you set them up. Just be frank. Why did you do that?”
“See?” Mateo sighed. He pretended to be aggrieved as he looked at Amber. The guy you like is sinister. I kindly helped him, but he didn’t thank me. He even accused me of setting this up. He always sees the worst in people. He criticized me in front of you and sowed discord between us. Now you know who’s the bad guy among us and who you should many.”
This isn’t the time to talk about that!” Amber was worried to see them get into a fight again because of her marriage. “Regardless, you have to tell us where you locked them up. I think we can at least visit them.”
After such a long time, Liam must be worried sick about them. Amber was certain that the thing he wanted most was to see Flossie and Leia safe and sound.
“Of course.” It was rare to see Mateo acting humanely. “I can’t let them go, but I can let you visit them.”
“Humph!” Liam glared at Mateo and added coldly, “Fine! Since you want to fight me, I won’t give up!’
Moments later, Liam and Amber arrived at the place where Flossie and Leia were locked up. They could hear noises and screams from afar.
“Oh, no!” Liam’s heart skipped a beat; he immediately assumed that someone was harming Flossie and Leia.
After staying in the fort for such a long time, Liam knew very well about the wickedness here.
On the surface, they seized territories and did proper business. In secret, they sold human organs, illegal items, and escort services. They also mutilated people and turned them into beggars, just like Mateo had said.
Having witnessed the terrible and inhumane darkness, Liam’s character changed drastically. He also grew more ruthless and aloof.
While he could ignore others’ fate, he couldn’t stand to see anyone harm the people he cared about. If anyone hurt Flossie or Lela, he would fight them with all he had.
“Get away from me! Ah..! I’m going to die! Help me!”
Flossie’s terrified voice echoed in the corridor, growing clearer as they got closer to the cell.
Liam tensed up when he heard that voice. He quickened his pace and rushed through the corridor, toward the cell where Flossie and Leia were locked up.
Suddenly, he became flabbergasted and his face stiffened. For a long time, he couldn’t regain his wits.
“Hey… What are you guys doing?”
On a table lay barbecue, jerky, beer, and fruit platters. Meanwhile, both Flossie and Leia were playing cards.
Leia ran after Flossie, then pressed her on the chair and said seriously, “Hey, gorgeous. You can’t run away! You got the card for kissing me, so you have to let me kiss you. If not, you’re trying to disobey the rules of the game!”
“Help! Help me..!” Flossie kept resisting, amused and befuddled. ‘Get away from me! I’m a desperate woman who likes men! I can’t kiss you! If I kiss you, I’m going to have nightmares Oh, just kill me! Is there anyone who can save me?”
Liam wasn’t the only one standing at the door. Amber was also with him since she was following him. Watching Flossie and Leia’s antics, she felt awkward and confused.
“Uh, it looks like we were scared for nothing.” Then, she asked carefully, “They look so close. Are they…a couple?”
It seemed possible. Leia was always with Flossie, taking care of the latter attentively. Also, they slept in the same bed and were very intimate with each other.
At first, Amber was jealous of their friendship-but now, it seemed they were more than best friends. If that was the case, she pitied Liam. No wonder he failed to win Flossie over even though he was so outstanding!
It seemed that… the situation was different. Flossie didn’t even like men.
“Hey, Liam. Don’t be sad. Although Ms. Ellsworth likes women, it doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance. I heard there are no specific preferences in this world. You just happened to like someone, regardless of gender. If you work hard, maybe you can move Ms. Ellsworth’s heart.” Amber, pitying Liam, tried her best to comfort him. “I feel that sincerity is the key. You can still win her over.”
“Hey, Gem. How could you..” Liam turned and looked at Amber, bewildered. She always ruined his impression of her. What do you mean? How could you say such a thing?”
He had always assumed Amber to be a young, innocent woman. She might not even understand the romance between men and women, let alone the profound words she had just said.
Yet right now, she showed her understanding of the people’s preferences and made such an opinion. Liam saw her in a new light.
“I learned it from reading, Amber continued seriously. “It’s very boring to stay in the fort all day. My greatest pleasure is reading novels. Well, to be honest, I love reading about the romances between men and men as well as romances between women and women. I read one about women. The heroine has a best friend who grew up with her. They thought they loved men, but in fact-
“Okay, stop!” Liam hurriedly interrupted Amber and said awkwardly. “That’s not the point.”
“I know that’s not the point, but that novel is interesting. The heroine’s character resembles Ms. Ellsworth’s. Plus, there’s also a male character whose character resembles yours and is in an ambiguous relationship with the heroine. He keeps ruining the relationship between the heroine and her best friend,” Amber went on.
